Scrap-A-Palooza! Quilt #6 Part Two

June's Scrap-A-Palooza quilt is moving along quite nicely!  It has been fun to work with such playful fabrics and soft colors.  Something unusual for me!

If you saw last week's post, you read how I sorted my scraps to determine the best size to cut my rectangles or "bricks". From the leftover chunks, I also cut some pieces that will work as half bricks.

Once I had all my scraps cut, I laid them out on my design wall.  In the odd numbered rows, I placed the half-brick on the right side of the quilt and on the even numbered rows, I placed the half brick on the left.

This makes assembly of the top super easy as there are not seams to match up!

I had to really cut creatively to get enough pieces for the size quilt I wanted.   I even pieced some of the scrappy bits together to make a piece large enough for a brick.
No one is truly going to notice!

Once I had the layout the way I wanted it, I sewed up each row.

You can see I left some of the panel pieces I was hoping to use longer than my chosen brick size.  To ensure a perfect fit, I cut them at 1X or 2X the width of a single brick.

(Don't forget to compensate for your seams allowances!)

Next it was just a matter of sewing up the row.

I did pin the rows together before sewing - matching up the beginning and end of the row and then pinning in a few places across the row.  This helped to ensure the top stayed square.

And here is the top all finished up!  This is the first time I have made this style of scrap quilt using a single collection of fabric.  I like it! It is certainly busy but I think it works.
My quilt is 52" square but you can make yours any size you desire.

You can read Part One for more information on how to determine the size of your quilt and the amount of squares needed.

In the past, I have made this style of quilt in solids or in monochromatic scraps. (Sorry, no pictures of my quilts but here is one I snapped a few years ago at a local outdoor quilt show.  These bricks are long and narrow. Very pretty in all its scrappy goodness!)

Here's an overview of the important stuff to do before the next step!

  • Determine a desired size quilt
  • Layout all your bricks on your design wall
  • Sew into rows and join together.
  • And quilt as desired...Easy Peasy!

And with every finished top, I try and throw out some easy quilting ideas.

This quilt is perfect for horizontal straight line quilting with a walking foot.  Don't think you can keep your spacing even?  Well then don't!  Irregularly spaced lines look great too!

For those of you wanting to try something new, how about this double wishbone pattern.

(It is a scrap quilt - so get adventurous!)

So that's all there is to this simple little quilt.  I will be back before the end of the month to share my finished quilt.  Hope I have inspired you to pull some scraps of your own and join in the fun.
And if you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact me.

Now let's sew up those scraps!

I like how the top turned out! The single fabric line is really cohesive and I love how you fussy cut some of the really great parts of the fabrics to display.

It's lovely, and a fun line of fabric, so why not use them together!

My kid so loves pigeon. Even as grown as she is, she still looks through those books. Suppose the art catches her attention. Nice finish. :)

this scrappy quilt looks really good all done from the one fabric line. Had to check out your blog when I saw your blog name at wip Wednesday!

SO cute! I love reading that book to my class. You're definitely right- nobody is going to notice that you had to piece some of the bricks together, especially once it's quilted.

Thank you so much for sharing at Needle and Thread Thursday!
