Scrap-A-Palooza! Quilt #15 Part Two

I have been making quite a bit of progress on my 9-patch Scrap-A-Palooza quilt.  This one is going to be a lot of fun when it is finished!

In my previous post on this quilt, I shared my decision to use these 5 colors in this quilt.  Any time I start a new scrap quilt, I first take a good look at the scraps I am using and determine what size I want to cut my pieces.  I found my scraps in these bins to be either thin strings or relatively large pieces.  So I decided to make my 9-patches from 3 1/2" squares.  This size square will make a 9" finished block.  I decided to make 6 blocks from each of the 5 colors.

(If your scraps are smaller, you might opt to cut 2 1/2" squares.)

As I was cutting my small squares, I decided to play with scale a bit and rather than cut squares for a 9 patch, I would just include some larger 9 1/2" squares.  It is sometimes a shame to cut up large scraps into a bunch of small pieces.  This will make sewing up the top a lot faster!

In no time at all, I had all the squares cut for my entire quilt.
 (From each color, I cut 36 - 3 1/2" squares and 2 - 9 1/2" square.)

For each nine patch, I simply decided on a layout I liked...

...and sewed it up.  I wanted this quilt to be about blocks of color so I tried to keep a lot of other colors out of the fabrics.  But you can sew your blocks however you wish.

I used these blocks as a leaders/enders project while I worked on another quilt.  I easily finished up all 20 blocks in one evening.

Currently my design walls are filled with other projects so you will just have to wait to see how I will be laying out these blocks.  Hopefully I will have something to share in about a week.

Until then, I hope you decide to pull out some scraps and sew along!

The perfect solution for the scraps, and the variety of print sizes and blocks will give it a lot of movement. Can't wait to see it!

Looking forward to seeing how you use the two sizes. You always have such great ideas.

I'm visiting from Fabric Tuesday, and not for the first time. I have really enjoyed your scrap projects! You're very talented!

I've visited before also. I do enjoy the way you "play." Choosing a finite number of colors seems to work well. I like that idea and may use a limited number of colors in a few projects just to see how it goes.

Very Inspiring, Cynthia
I love making leaders enders now.
My design walls (two small ones about 4x6) on each side of my big window are full of projects too hahahah
Happy Wednesday

I just finished my leader and ender project so I will be curious to see what you come up with with these!

Love the leaders and ender idea and your blocks are sure turning out great Cyndy! So colorful and pretty!

I still have never been able to make anything with leaders and enders. What happens is that they too get sucked down into the feed dogs and then I need to have a leader for my leader. It ends up taking me too long and is more like trying to sew tow projects at one time. Maybe i should try it on my 301 with only the straight stitch.

Someday, I will accumulate enough pretty scraps to make a quilt out of them. For now, I enjoy everyone elses... I love your color combination!

Ooh, this is looking great! I love the idea of using some bigger 9.5" squares! Those will have to wait until next week for me, but I will begin with what I've got down here. Think this could be charity quilt #2 for the seniors. :-)

I'm envious of those nicely sorted scraps. :-)

I agree about larger pieces. I usually cut the largest I can (no larger than 6 1/2 square) and continue down to 1 1/2. Unless I have a specific project in mind.

Can't wait to see what next.
