Scrap-A-Palooza! Quilt #15 Finish - Blogger's Quilt Festival

Sorry to not share this finish sooner but rather than write about this quilt twice in a short period of time, I thought I would kill two birds with one stone as they say.  The 15th Scrap-A-Palooza quilt is also going to be one of my entries into the Spring Blogger's Quilt Festival hosted by

 Amy's Creative Side.

For those new to my blog, I host a series called Scrap-A-Palooza.  About once a month, I make a new scrap quilt and share my process as I put the quilt together.  It is usually shared in four parts.  And when I finish a quilt like I am sharing today, I link up all of the past posts so you can recreate a similar quilt if you are inspired to do a little scrap busting.

This quilt started with a need to empty a few of my color bins.  They were getting a little difficult to close.

In the second post, I shared my cut sizes and block construction.  I decided to go with a simple nine patch this time around.













Then it was time to get the blocks up on the design wall and decide on a final layout.  Lots of options were provided and the finished quilt top was shared.

And now here in the finale, there are pictures of the finished quilt!  I am quite happy with it - not only did it provide a home for a number of scraps but this quilt was fast and easy to put together..

It looks so wonderful there next to my little succulent garden.

My rainbow was missing purple so I decided to add it to the back.  This older Tina Givens print that was hiding in my stash was perfect!  I didn't have quite enough so I added a strip of an orange woven which shows off the simple swirl quilting nicely.

I will be entering this quilt in the ROYGBIV category.  I cannot wait to see all of the other eye candy that will be linked up this time around.  I always discover so many great new blogs to follow.

Scrap-A-Palooza! Quilt #15 Part Three

It always feels so good when a project comes together quickly!

In my last post on this month's Scrap-A-Palooza quilt, I shared the rainbow blocks I made.  These 9 patches will make 9" blocks so they are big and bold!

This week, I played with them on my design wall.

First, there was this layout...

I placed the blocks randomly.

And then this one...

I set the colors diagonally across the quilt.

But I finally settled on this layout.  I really like the look of the colors set in a column!

Once I had the layout, it was hardly any effort at all to add a 1.5" sashing between the blocks and put a 3.5" border around the whole top!  I went with Kona Snow - probably becasue it was sitting there on the corner of my ironing board!  

I love the big 9" blocks of color I added in place of some of the 9 patches.

 And because it has started raining here and will continue for days, I had to use this photo of the quilt top on my kitchen floor.  There will be no outdoor photos for a while!

Now to dig around for a backing.  I am sure there are going to be lots of options as this fun quilt has so many colors.

And as I was putting away my scraps, I noticed I didn't have to squish down the fabric to get the drawers to close...Now that is progress!

Hope to have this one quilted by the end of the month!

Scrap-A-Palooza! Quilt #15 Part Two

I have been making quite a bit of progress on my 9-patch Scrap-A-Palooza quilt.  This one is going to be a lot of fun when it is finished!

 In my previous post on this quilt, I shared my decision to use these 5 colors in this quilt.  Any time I start a new scrap quilt, I first take a good look at the scraps I am using and determine what size I want to cut my pieces.  I found my scraps in these bins to be either thin strings or relatively large pieces.  So I decided to make my 9-patches from 3 1/2" squares.  This size square will make a 9" finished block.  I decided to make 6 blocks from each of the 5 colors.

(If your scraps are smaller, you might opt to cut 2 1/2" squares.)

As I was cutting my small squares, I decided to play with scale a bit and rather than cut squares for a 9 patch, I would just include some larger 9 1/2" squares.  It is sometimes a shame to cut up large scraps into a bunch of small pieces.  This will make sewing up the top a lot faster!

In no time at all, I had all the squares cut for my entire quilt. 

 (From each color, I cut 36 - 3 1/2" squares and 2 - 9 1/2" square.)

 For each nine patch, I simply decided on a layout I liked...

...and sewed it up.  I wanted this quilt to be about blocks of color so I tried to keep a lot of other colors out of the fabrics.  But you can sew your blocks however you wish.

 I used these blocks as a leaders/enders project while I worked on another quilt.  I easily finished up all 20 blocks in one evening.

Currently my design walls are filled with other projects so you will just have to wait to see how I will be laying out these blocks.  Hopefully I will have something to share in about a week.

Scrap-A-Palooza! Quilt #15 Part One

It seems like such a long time since I have posted a Scrap-A-Palooza quilt.  After finishing my little scrappy string quilt, I have been digging through my scraps waiting for inspiration to strike and everything I pulled to work on just didn't seem to want to come together.  

Today, as I was putting away some scraps, I realized I really need to work with some bright colors.  I grabbed these five drawers of scraps and was instantly inspired to make a rainbow quilt.  I think I am going to do something with a simple nine patch block.  I hope to put a nice dent in these scraps with this quilt so I am going to keep any solids or unifying sashing to a minimum.

I realize now that I haven't made a rainbow quilt since I made the scrappy version of my Wiggle Time pattern.  And that was back in 2013!

 

Now that I have my scraps it is time to finalize a plan and start cutting. I will be back next week to share how I determined my cut sizes and maybe even start laying out the blocks

Usually once inspiration strikes I move at a pretty fast pace!
