Oh Scrap! : Definition of a New Project

I felt like I could finally clean up some in my sewing room having finished my placemat project. There were little piles of scraps and fabric all over the place.

I found a stack of fabric that I wanted to bag up for another day.  I pulled out "the drawer I never talk about" to stuff it in there and was drawn to a few other bags that had some interesting colors.

I refrained and stuffed it back in the drawer and proceeded to sit and sew.  One thing I can say about the placemat project is that it has been a great leader/ender project.

As I was sewing, I really felt like I needed one...

I decided to just use all those odd shaped triangles I saw in one of those bags together.  I figured I could sew them up and just put them in the spare parts box.  No harm...and not a new project!

After all, 2022 is the year to finish UFOs.  And I really want to end the year with a low number.

I, of course, quickly sewed all the triangles up and then decided to add a few small scraps to them.  Just some simple mindless sewing.

One thing I love about just sewing bits of color together is that it can build confidence in color choices.  I pondered how these colors would look with a touch of red.  So I can easily say I am just learning new color combinations at this point.  Still not a project...Right?!?

However, I might need your help to explain how all these pieces up on my design wall are not a new project.  At what point do I have to put it on my list? 😂

What scrappy projects are you working on?

I'm also piecing a scrap vortex, I consider it an ongoing project, not a new project. I put little leftover scraps in a basket, when it's full, I pull out the other blocks and make more to add to the pile. When those blocks are completed, they're all stored again until the little basket is full. My blocks will be used in a charity quilt that needs to be 60" by 80". This quilt is a slow quilt in progress because it has to wait on the scrap. There will always be more scraps so whenever this vortex is finished, I'll have to start another one. So no, you haven't started a new quilt, you're making progress on a slow quilt. Happy stitching!

Aren't those fun?! I love how there are pops of green throughout. Maybe it is a new project, but I will just say, "Why not?!" :)

I think these colours work beautifully together. And you can call it whatever you want especially for this, the beginning of something new!

What a fun scrap project!

For me this would be a new GOAL to use crumbs and when I knew definitely what the crumbs were to become then I would call it a new project. That's because sometimes I just sew crumbs and "make fabric". Then later I cut that "made fabric" into pieces for stars or happy blocks, etc.

LOL! Sometimes we need to go where our muse takes us. :D

Lol, Cynthia. Are you in trouble? What I see is what I call "making yardage", or tidying up the scraps. Sewing them together doesn't make a new project per se. If you don't know yet what they are it's because they are still scraps sewn together to make yardage that you can cut up when you decide what to do with them. Think of them as you do your orphan blocks. Are the orphans a new project? They sure look good together though up on the design wall. Enjoy! ;^)

The Drawer you never talk about had some cool things in there!

Hm m m the drawer you never talk about, Too funny! It sounds like there are a number of posts in that drawer! Looks like you made yardage and now you have blocks. . . .what interesting blocks they are and the use of red is the perfect accent. A new project is always ok to start; but, new to me means a plan, fabric gathered/prepared and this looks like a crumb project waiting to be made into something useful. Perhaps that never talked about drawer is a project in itself! Enjoyed your post today!

more like fun or obsession than project! It sounds heavenly to me, just playing with color, using small scraps, improv

What a fun use of your scraps. You have a fabulous collection and this quilt is taking shape. Thank you so much for sharing and hosting the link party. Happy Sunday.

Hi Cynthia, I think that if you don't sew your blocks together, then it will still be a collection of possibilities. If they get sewn together.....then you have a new project :-) It looks like you're having fun, so enjoy!

If you finish this really quickly I don't think you have to put it on a list except as a finish. Haha.
What fun!

Since quilting is all about having fun, definitely go to wherever your whims lead you and keep playing. You can keep calling it play until it is finished, then it is a quilt.
