Quilt Number Three

How many quilts can be made from some scraps and leftover fabric in a 12" x 14" tub?  I now know the answer is three!

I made this lovely string quilt from the last bits of the fabric.  You can see the first quilt here.  And learn about the second quilt here.

Here is a reminder of the tub of fabric I received from a friend.  It didn't look like there was that much fabric in there!

When I made the string blocks, I placed two black strings about midway on each side of the diagonal.

I was hoing this placement would give the look of floating black diamonds.  It worked pretty well considering I didn't measure anything and had all sorts of widths of fabric.

I did dig in my stash and found a bit of black fabric for the "hashtag" border treatment and the binding.

I had set aside the last of the larger cuts of fabric for the backing center.  I did have to pull the gold fabric from my stash.

You also have a great shot of the quilting I did - kind of a topographical map.  The spacing between lines is about an inch.

 This quilt ended up being about 57" square.  I finally ran out of fabric!

I am happy to finish all of these and move on to something new.  It was a fun challenge to see what I could create from those bits and pieces but I am ready to move onto some happier colors.

Oh Scrap! : The Clean-up Quilt

First off, I want to wish all of you Mom's a very special Mother's Day.  

I would love to give each of you flowers but this digital bloom will have to do.  My peonies are just starting to bloom and the color show is simply amazing!

This past week I have been sewing up the last of the Australian fabric into quilt number three.  I pretty much only had strips and bits left so I thought I would make some simple string blocks.  Are you surprised?!  I wanted each block to have two thin black strings as shown in the block above.  I did have to pull some older black/tan fabrics from my stash to accomplish this.  But the rest of the blocks were made from the Australian prints.

I hope to get them sewn up into a quilt top this week.

Quilt Number Two

Have you been following along to see how many quilts I can create out of this bin of fabrics given to me by a friend?

The tub measure about 12 x 14 x 5. 

 I shared the first quilt I finished here.  Now it is time to share the second finish!

I had a combination of both small pieces and larger chunks available.  I decided I would start by turning the small pieces into 9 patches.  I liked the idea of using them to create a diamond shape so I then cut the chunks into rectangles to finish off a pattern.

The soft colored areas were actually made using two different fabrics.  I didn't have enough of just one print so I faked it and used two!  Most people won't even notice it.

Can you believe it?  I was even able to create a backing and binding out of the bin too.  So that means two entire quilts so far out of that bin!

I have to admit, I am not a big fan of snakes...So this quilt needs to find another home!

For the quilting, I decided to just create some fun texture by quilting in "explosions" - or at least that is what I call this quilting.

So there is quilt number two!  100% of the fabric came out of the bin.

Will there be quilt number three?

Finish Number One

A few weeks ago, I shared a bin of fabric I received from a friend and wondered how many quilts I could make from all the fabric.

Well, I am ready to share finish number one!

One hundred percent of the fabrics came out of the bin.

All of the fabrics appear to be from Australia.  For this first quilt, I simply cut a bunch of 4.5" squares and went with a simple patchwork.  I focused on cutting all of the smaller pieces of scraps and leaving any large cuts for future quilts.

There are so many fun designs in these prints.

I even had enough fabric in the bin to piece together a backing and a binding.

The yellow piece is a wonderful kangaroo print which looked great with some larger purple prints from the bin.

 It is a simple patchwork quilt but there is so much to look at and enjoy.  Now I will see if my friend wants this finished quilt.  (Otherwise, it will probably be the quilt I send off to Bernie for a Hands2Help donation quilt.)  My Friend may want to wait and see what I do next!
