Quick Scrappy Patchwork

I think one of the most challenging task of Many Hands and Many Hearts is keeping up with the scraps that are created making all these quilts.  And I know it is going to be more challenging in the future as we make more quilts.

So, I find myself whipping out quick patchwork quilts.  This week , I went through the RWB scraps and found quite a few prints I could cut into 4.5" squares.

There is no rhyme or reason to how I sewed the squares together.  I quickly quilted it up and moved it to the stack of quilts that need binding.  It seems not possible, but I feel like I need to put together one scrap quilt a week.  That is crazy!

I did send a big box of scraps to Marci - she makes a ton of scrappy string blocks for us.  When we received some blocks back in the mail, it was fun to look through them and recognize our scraps nestled in with some of hers.

Hope all of you are enjoying your weekend!

Making Progress

I did have a finish to share with you today but it was pushed out to a later date.  I worked with the Fat Quarter Shop and made another shortcut quilt.  So today you will just have to read about the progress I made on my recent scrap quilt.

I have been pulling a bunch of my brown scraps and cutting them into 4.5" squares.  I also completed a bunch of 4.5" hourglass blocks in black and cream.  My inspiration piece had the hourglass blocks laid out like above.

I think I am going to spread them out and lay them out like this.  I really want to use this quilt as a way to use up some of my rarely used colored scraps....like brown.

And because my brown scraps had so much teal blue in them, I decided to add them to the design.  I have been trying to work through these teal scraps for years.

Here is my inspiration.  This was a rug I saw on TV when I couldn't sleep one night.
Quilt inspiration can be found everywhere!

Have a wonderful weekend!

A Special Finish for my Nephew

Why do I always wait until the last minute!

My only nephew graduated from high school this year and will be going to Creighton University this Fall.  He is going to be pitching for their baseball team and I am so very proud of him.

He has known he was going to this university for over a year, but I decided to wait until a few weeks before he was leaving home to work on his quilt.  And what I thought would take me only a day or two ended up taking me forever!

But I have to say, I am quite proud of how well it turned out.  Of course there was nothing team-themed I could purchase that I could use for his quilt so I ended up drawing and appliqueing his school logo to the center of his quilt.

I used a raw edge method using fabric mod-podge.  The detail you can get from this method is simply amazing.  I would certainly do it a bit differently if I attempt something like this again.

(Which I will admit is probably not likely - certainly not at this large scale!)

My initial plan was to make the quilt more like a whole-cloth but the bright blue was just too much for me.  I ended up cutting a whole bunch of plaid and chambray yardage I had in my stash that I actually purchased for some shirts.  I must really love this guy!

I did quilt his name directly into the patchwork.

I kept the quilting fairly simple and tried to make the quilt as durable as possible.  I put a silly text bubble fabric on the back.  Most of the bubbles are filled with "Zzzzzz".  However, I might just have to hide some other words in there just to see if he finds them.

The quilt is 72" x 88".  The center piece is 40" square.
It is a relief to get this one done and shipped!

Finish Number One

A few weeks ago, I shared a bin of fabric I received from a friend and wondered how many quilts I could make from all the fabric.

Well, I am ready to share finish number one!
One hundred percent of the fabrics came out of the bin.

All of the fabrics appear to be from Australia.  For this first quilt, I simply cut a bunch of 4.5" squares and went with a simple patchwork.  I focused on cutting all of the smaller pieces of scraps and leaving any large cuts for future quilts.

There are so many fun designs in these prints.

I even had enough fabric in the bin to piece together a backing and a binding.

The yellow piece is a wonderful kangaroo print which looked great with some larger purple prints from the bin.

It is a simple patchwork quilt but there is so much to look at and enjoy.  Now I will see if my friend wants this finished quilt.  (Otherwise, it will probably be the quilt I send off to Bernie for a Hands2Help donation quilt.)  My Friend may want to wait and see what I do next!

Quilt number two is already started!

Oh Scrap! : How Many Quilts?

A friend of mine recently moved and I helped her pack up her sewing room.  And if you want to get a good read on exactly how much fabric you have, spend time packing it up!

After spending an afternoon putting yardage pieces into many boxes, I laughingly told her all future fabric purchases had to get approval from me first!  :)

But one of the things that happens when you move your fabric, is you identify fabrics that you will probably never use.  So I took home this tub of Australian fabrics left over from an older project she made.  My plan was to run it through my fabric cutter and use up the fabric.

Once I got it home, I began thinking exactly how many quilts I could make out of these leftovers.
Could I get more than one?  Maybe even two?  I accepted the challenge and started cutting!

There were a number of strips that had been cut at 5" wide and quite a few partial fat quarters.  I decided to cut all of these up into 4.5" squares using my Accuquilt multiple die.  This one is one of my favorites.  Being able to stack 10 layers of fabric, with a few cranks of a handle, I have 40 perfectly cut 4.5" squares.

In no time at all, I had a stack of squares - which soon turned into a 56" x 68" quilt top.
And I had not even started cutting up the larger cuts of fabric in the tub.

Which I soon used to piece a backing.  I hope to share the first finished quilt from the tub soon.  I will most likely make this quilt my second Hands2Help donation quilt.

Simple patchwork is so perfect for scraps like these!
