Something New!

I am actually posting about a new project from some new fabric!

That doesn't happen too much anymore.

Connecting Threads sent me a fat quarter bundle and some of their thread to make something with for Many Hands and Many Hearts.  I have always liked their thread for piecing.  I have not tried to use it on my longarm.

The fat quarter bundle is the Blueberry Parfait collection.  Lovely blues and creamy tans.  I haven't figured out what pattern I am going to make but I think the blocks will be boxy to really show off these pretty fabrics.  I have two designs in mind - I will make the final decision when I start cutting this week.

I tried to insert a video so you can see for yourself how pretty these are - not sure how this will work.  Sorry about the background noise.

Once I get the first few blocks completed, I will share what I am making.

Kits and Quilts

 A few weeks ago, I mentioned one of my quilt buyers wanted some small sized quilts to gift and to donate.  Since then, I have been going through my stash and pulling some fabrics for inspiration.

As I went through my stash, I was finding a lot of kid friendly fat quarters so the first pattern that came to mind was my Wiggle Time pattern.  It needs 5 fat quarters and about 2 yards of a background fabric.

Here is the first quilt I made and finished.  

I loved this colorful balloon fabric.  

It was easy to add some bright red, yellow and orange prints from my stash.  I also had some Kona Navy that worked perfectly for the background.

I found an orange and blue print in my stash for the backing.  It was some bits leftover from a previous backing so I had to piece it quite a bit.  But the seams hardly show.

The second quilt I am making will have a cat and mouse theme.  Most of the prints are very soft in color so I pulled some Kona Snow for the background.

I also put together 6 more fabric combinations.  The next step will be finding some background fabrics for each set.  I am not sure which I will sew up and which I will turn into Wiggle Time kits to sell at events.

One of the things I love about this pattern is you can use any combination of fat quarters.  I like to duplicate prints in the same quilt.

Future Small Donation Quilts

 One of my frequent quilt buyers contacted me and asked me if I could make some smaller quilts that she could buy to donate.  In this situation, I always try to keep the costs down as much as I can and use simple and quick patterns.

Of course I thought of my Wiggle Time pattern.  It is a quick sew and uses just 5 fat quarters.  I recently snagged two fat quarters of this fun balloon fabric from a friend and added in three more brights.  

Some navy blue Kona and I am all set for the first one!

My plans are to "kit" up quite a few more fat quarter stacks.  That way I can sew them up when I get the time. I will try and share as I get them coordinated.

I still love this blue version I made for the cover of my pattern.  I have found some of the pink and gray version of the animal print in the center so I can't wait to complete a "girl" version.

Off to sew!

(BTW - I was just notified by my distributor that RK is raising prices for Kona cottons in March.  If you need some for your stash, you might want to stock up soon if you can!)

A Wiggle Time Finish

 

A few weeks ago I came across some coordinating fat quarters and some matching background fabrics in my stash and decided to make a quilt using my Wiggle Time pattern.

I was able to not only get it quilted this week but I also attached the binding.

Hurray for a finish!

I really like how the printed background fabric looks with the focus prints.  It looks like it came from the same collection! (but it didn't - I recently ordered the background fabric from Connecting Threads. Sadly I don't think it is available anymore.)

I did struggle finding a backing fabric.  I finally settled on just using some Kona Snow.  It really shows the swirly/floral quilting I did.

I am really pleased with how it turned out.  I love using this Wiggle Time pattern whenever I find some stray fat quarters in my stash.  I like having some smaller quilts stashed away for gifts and this design is a fast finish.

It feels good to get a few more finishes under my belt.  In recent months, I have been in the mood for starting projects so I find myself with a lot going on in my sewing room.  I hope to keep up the momentum - Hopefully more finishes will soon follow!

Evolution of a Fabric Pull

 I know that not every quilter works this way, but almost all of my quilts start with the fabric.  I end up being inspired by a piece of fabric and it just takes off from there.  Sometime the fabrics come together quickly - other times it might take many months.

Back in January, Sally over at The Objects of  Design graciously gifted me some scraps.  In amongst her generous bag of fabrics were these three fat quarters.  I rarely have fabrics from the same collection (or even the same print) so I set them aside and decided to use them together in a quilt.

But when I received them, I didn't have anything I thought would go well with them.  So they just sat...

Then one day, I came across this low volume print that I had purchased from Connecting Threads last year.  I loved how they looked together!

But with three fat quarters and 2.5 yards of background, I knew I didn't have enough fabric for a quilt.  So the stack of fabrics just continued to sit.

I would occasionally over the last few months come across a fabric that I thought might work, but nothing excited me.  This morning I dug out a taupe geometric fabric that I have had for at least a decade.  I think I actually squealed out loud!

It is a half yard cut so that means technically I have 5 fat quarters.  And anytime I have five fat quarters and a big cut of background, my brain instantly goes to my Wiggle Time pattern.

I will use the geometric print in the second and fourth "wiggle".  Now I just need to decide what order I want those pretty fat quarters that Sally shared with me.

I am sure this pattern was on my mind due to Maggie (at Making a Lather) having shared her finished Wiggle Time quilt last Sunday.  You can see her sunny quilt here.

This quilt goes together very quickly and is super simple to make.  So hopefully I will have the top together soon.  I am still working on lots of other more tedious projects so this "speed sewing" will be a fun break.

A Pretty Finish

Well look what I snuck onto my longarm between customer quilts!  With the holidays coming, I have been quilting long hours getting everyone else's holiday gifts quilted up and delivered.  The pile of my own quilts has been growing and I just decided to take some time and quilt up one of my own.

It isn't a large quilt so it quilted up pretty quickly.  I think the finished size is about 40" x 50".  This quilt was made with fat quarters I had won and you can read more about it here.

  For the quilting, I just did some squiggle lines in each block.  I didn't want to take the time to measure or mark for straight lines so these wavy lines gave it a far more casual appearance.

I even had some fabric in my stash that I picked up on sale for the back.  I love it when that happens! This quilt has no home yet but I am sure it won't stick around my house long.
