Pretty Pincushion Blog Remix

The Fat Quarter Shop has been recently running a fun event where they are bringing life back to some of their old projects through Blog Remixes.  So of course I wanted to play along!

I was given the opportunity to choose my project and I picked the Pretty Pincushion project by Sherri McConnell.  You can find the tutorial and assembly video here.

To participate, all I had to do is use the pattern to make a fun little pincushion.  The pattern is written to use charm squares - so I went to my scraps and found lots of  leftover squares from previous projects.

But once I started pulling fabrics, I had a hard time stopping at just one pincushion.

Working in an assembly line process, I soon had a rainbow of pretty pincushions!

They are so cute, I really want to keep them all for myself....but I guess I will share them.

I can always make more 😉

Pincushion Party

I love having a basket full of pincushions that I can use as little thank you for fellow quilters.  Knowing I have a couple trunk shows and classes scheduled in the near future, I thought I would have a little pincushion production party!

To make the process go a bit faster, I pulled out my orphan block suitcase and was able to grab some already sewn pieces to get me going.  (As you can see, it is almost time for a few more orphan block quilt - my suitcase is stuffed full!)

I started with these two made from bowtie scraps and leftover strip sets from my Burgoyne blocks.  They measure about 4" square.

I also found some leftover HSTs from my Summer Solstice quilt and the start to a block I abandoned for the Splendid Sampler QAL (which still is not completed!).

I made these two from some "cheater" fabrics I didn't use in one of my Layers of Charm quilts.  It came from the Modern Neutrals collection by Amy Ellis.

And finally I made a pile of pincushions using some leftover bits from my Improv Stripes quilt.

In no time at all, I had a dozen more pincushion gifts to share!

Another Little Distraction

I am supposed to be spending my time catching up on projects....

But when you see something you have to make, you just have to scratch that itch!

When the Homeward Bound block was released for the Splendid Sampler, I instantly wanted to make a pincushion out of it.  I reduced the paper-pieced pattern by 60% and pulled some small bits of fabric from the blue scrap bin.  I ended up with this cute 4 1/2" little block.

Which I then filled with crushed walnut shells and turned it into this fun pincushion.

Now I can go back to sewing up my real Splendid Sampler blocks....which is what I am supposed to be doing this week!

Pincushions!

Back in June, my friend Diann sent me the cutest little pincushion.  It brings me so much joy every time I use it (which is practically daily) so I have been wanting to make some of my own to share with a few of my quilty friends.

First up was a little string pincushion made from Amanda Jean's Good Neighbors fabrics.  Both Diann and I love Crazy Mom Quilts and scraps so I thought this was a perfect choice for a little return pincushion love. <3

Hidden on the back is a fun little message.

It was so sweet that she shared a photo of its home in her sewing room - right next to her machine!

 I also made one for my Kaffe Fassett loving friend.  I couldn't get too fancy with this one as his prints are all so large.  But I did find a pretty floral I liked with some pretty green shot cotton.

 Yep, she is a local friend who I talk to almost daily and is always there for me.

 The next one I made was for my friend Barb.  She is also a longarm quilter so thread is a big part of our world.  When I saw the Fresh Spool patterns from Fresh Lemons I knew I wanted to use it for her pincushion.

 She was probably one of the first friends I made on-line and has been so helpful and supportive over the years.

 I couldn't tell you where I found these friendship sayings but they are perfect for the backs of these pincushions.  I knew if I held onto them long enough I would find the perfect use for them!

I also made a few of these beauties for some more local friends.   I fussy cut a design out of some fabric and needle turned appliqued them to some pretty blue fabric.  I added a little bling from the button jar to finish it off.

I still have a few more pincushions I want to make but I had to put this project aside for a bit to finish off some holiday gifts.  Maybe after the first of the year, I will have some more to share.

And I cannot go away without sharing this cute little pincushion brought to me last week by a friend.  I had given her the button fabric from my stash and it came back as a mouse.

So Darn Adorable!
