An RSC Finish

I admit, I can never seem to wait the whole year to finish some of my Rainbow Scrap Challenge quilts.  I tend to start them mid-year too.  I am a bit of a "rule breaker" so I am okay with that!

The quilt I finished up is my Quarter Log Cabin.  I really love this one!

Unfortunately, the bright sun was not helping me when it came time to snap some photos of it.

I decided to put these blocks on point.  I have been doing this with a lot of blocks lately  - but for this one, I dropped the sashing.  I really liked how the blocks create kind of a chevron design.

This quilt started out as a way for me to use a bunch of black and white 9-patches left over from my Burgoyne Surrounded quilt.  I used whatever width of strings were in the scrap bin and then trimmed the blocks to 10.5" square.

When I laid out the blocks, you can see I alternated the direction of the nine patch - either pointing up or down.  This is what gave the quilt the chevron look.  I also oversized the inset triangles so the blocks float further from the edges.

You can really see the design from the side.

I backed the quilt with some lighter blue fabric out of my stash and used the same medium gray I used for the inset triangles for the binding.

Probably just to keep me entertained, I always seem to give myself a challenge on every quilt and for this one, for each block I had to use a string from my scrap bin that was "undesirable".  There are many things that can make a fabric undesirable - and this quilt sure helped to purge those fabrics from my scrap bin.

Even with all those fabrics in the quilt, I still love the finished product :)

I think I am going to put this one in my donate pile.  It is bright and happy and I hope will bring a smile to someone's face.

This finish also means I can now start a new block design for another RSC quilt.  I am currently torn between three different designs - I need to make a decision soon!

Update:  I have now released a pattern for this design.  It is the second of my Scrap Mixology series called Two Bits.  You can order a pdf download either on Etsy or from my Payhip pattern shop.

I love this quilt! I've watched the blocks come together and put this pattern on my bucket list, but seeing it all together, it may move up the list. Unless you want to "donate" it to me? (Just kidding, I know better!)

This is a very fun quilt, those "bouncing" 9-patches really give it movement.

I appreciate you giving us all permission to break the "rules," lol! This turned out beautifully! Something I definitely love about string blocks is how you can hide unloved fabric in them and it all looks great. A very happy quilt and finish!

I really like this one! I'm like you -- when the RSC quilt gets big enough, I call it "done" and begin another one.

Love this one also Cynthia. I love the way those little black and white four patches look like flowers in a colourful garden. Great scrap busting quilt and method.

I agree with these people above: your quilt is AWESOME. To say you have used undesirable scraps and turn them into this gorgeous quilt makes it every more AWESOME!! Brownie points to you! Congratulations on this fabulous finish. Now, you know I want one like that too.
P.S. Finishing RSC quilts before the end of the year is some what showing your rebel side of not following the rules. On the other hand, I am glad you do because I can't wait to see your quilts. Hahaha! ;^)

This one is fantastic! I love the addition of the black and white, but the layout is the best. The layout and the colors! You would be hard pressed to see any undesirable fabrics mixed in!

Love this one! It makes my eyes happy to follow the zig zags and hop from checkerboard to checkerboard. A fun one, for sure :)

That turned out beautifully, Cynthia! The 9-patch centers add a modern zing to the layout! And purging the uglies is always a cause for celebration! Like you, I try to stagger my RSC finishes.

Beautiful! Funny how undesirable fabrics can blend a bit when surrounded by others. I like the idea of using at least one per block; I may use that.

What a great looking quilt! I love that you used a string in every block that wasn't fabulous to you. Wonderful idea! I always like to have some sort of personal challenge too. Makes it all the more interesting and then there's a story to tell at the end.:)

Oh, gosh...I love how this turned out. And what a way to turn some ugly ducklings into swans! Two thumbs up!!

Congrats on a colorful finish! It's so fun to see how you put all our RSC blocks together in final quilt. A lot of my RSC projects are unfinished because I haven't come up with a great setting.
