First Quilt Finish of 2022

 I shared some finished placemats earlier this month, but this is the first quilt finish of 2022.

I had a number of navy-blue leftover binding strips and large blue chunks in my scrap bins.  So I wanted to make a project that used them up.  I am also wanting to clean out the tiny crumbs from my scrap bins - so this quilt really helped meet those two goals.

There are a number of different layouts that can be made using this block.  But I went with this one because I didn't need to match up a bunch of points.  I am really pleased with how it turned out.

The block is quite simple...it is just a 2.5 x 8.5" rectangle with four 1.5" flip corners sewn on.

I was able to use up some older stash on the back.  I didn't have quite enough of the striped fabric, so I pieced in another blue.  It really shows off the swirly quilting.

This one will most likely go into the donation pile.  It isn't very big - it measures 48"x 56".

I am pleased to report it used up almost all the navy scraps I had. Yay!

This wek I hope to focus on the UFO project I want to finish by the end of the month.  Almost all the blocks are done - I just need to sew them up and quilt...and I have about 10 days to get it all done!

Thought I would Never Finish

 My initial plan was to be sharing a quilt finish today.  But I am going to have to settle with just having the finished quilt top to share.

I really loved this project when I started it.  But as I started making the blocks, I realized they took quite a bit of time to cut and sew all those tiny flip corners.

I thought I would never finish all the blocks!

But I did finally finish them this week.  And I have to admit, I am really pleased with how it turned out.

This project really cleaned out all the big chunks clogging up my blue scrap bin and the flip corners ate through a lot of crumbs.

Hopefully this weekend I can get the backing sewn and maybe I can get it quilted next week.

Now I can move on to something else!

Oh Scrap! : Back on Track

 First of all, sorry I missed the link up last week.  It was a first in the nine years I have been hosting this weekly event.  I totally lost track of time and before I knew it, Sunday was half over.  So, feel free to link up your older post if you like.

I have been busy sewing these scrappy bits together.

Originally my plan was to sew them in horizontal strips like this.

I really do like how this looks...

But as I continued to work on them, the thought of matching all those points was very unappealing to me.  So, I decided to sew them up into groups of four and rotate them.  This will be so much easier to assemble!  I am pretty sure this quilt will just get donated so why make it harder than it needs to be.

I also finished up two low volume improv placemats in red.  I just need to find some backings, quilt them up and trim them to size. Then I can slowly work on attaching all the bindings.   I think I have enough bits to make one more in red then I will be moving onto some with blue.

I have a couple sew days with friends scheduled soon so I look forward to making a lot of progress on both of these projects.

This time of year is always a great time to buy or add to your AccuQuilt cutting system.  There are some great deals on both the Go! and the Studio cutters and dies.

Oh Scrap! : Too Many Blues

 Not too recently, I had my blue scrap bin out.  After sorting out some pieces I wanted, I realized the bin was still so stuffed and overflowing, I could not slide it back into its home.

It has sat in the middle of my sewing room floor waiting for me to do something about it.

After much thinking, I finally came up with an idea. Most of my darker blue scraps are wider strings.  I also have a lot of dark blue leftover bindings already cut at 2.5" wide.  So, I decided to cut them to 8.5" lengths and use some 1.5" red, orange and gold squares to create some flip corners on the ends.  These small squares will also help me use up a lot of the tiny scraps in my warm color bins.

Two problems addressed.

Right now, my plan is to put them together like this. I need to spend some time pulling and cutting the necessary scraps but I think this is a good start.

I really didn't want to start a new project until next year but you can't control when inspiration strikes!
