A Colorful Quilty Hug

There is a wonderful event going on right now hosted by the wonderful Sarah over at Confessions of a Fabric Addict.  Every year she organizes a quilt drive called Hands2Help.  Hundreds of quilts get donated to some wonderful organizations and I try and participate every year.

I usually finish up one of my Rainbow Scrap Challenge quilts for the event.  Because they are so bright and colorful, they make a wonderful quilty hug.

I just finished up my rainbow zigzag quilt.  It is made with 2.5 x 4.5" rectangles and finished out as a 12" block.  And everything came from the scrap bin!

I had the perfect giant floral print for the back but it wasn't quite big enough so I found a fun stripe in my stash to run down the back and use as the binding.

I could have created a number of patterns with the blocks but decided to just randomly position them so they create kind if a fun maze look.  I will miss making these blocks each month - this is definitely a pattern I would make again in the future.

I am sending this quilt off to Emily as a Quilty Hug for Happy Chemo.  She has been collecting quilts for years for this organization.

And the timing of this event was perfect because this quilt was my March UFO challenge quilt.  I am a few days late but I will still celebrate crossing another project off my list.
(Of course we all know that once a RSC quilt gets done, a new project is immediately started!)

Oh Scrap! : Green Blocks

This week I found a bit of time to work on blocks for all three of my Rainbow Scrap Challenge quilts.

The color for March is green so first I pulled some lime green scraps and made a zigzag block.  I already have a teal green and dark green block so I needed just this one for this project.

I also made another half log cabin block in lots of shades of green.  I think that brings the total green blocks up to four.  When I started this project, I told myself I had to put at least one of my undesirable scraps in each block.  I went overboard on this block - I think there is only one that I like!

Not my favorite block, but I know it will get lost amongst the other blocks.

And finally I finished up a 7" pear for my garden quilt.
I also want to make a little peapod block but I am still in the design stage.  So hopefully by next Sunday, I will have that block to share.

Now, what about you - what are you making with your scraps?

March UFO Challenge

With a new month comes a new UFO project to work on.  The APQ project for March is number 8 - which is an easy one!

This scrappy zig zag quilt is the chosen quilt to finish this month.  Even though this project is one of my RSC quilts for this year, I went ahead and placed it on my list because I knew I needed to go in and backfill some colors and I didn't really want to wait for them to be called in 2019.

Now this means I get to start something new for a Rainbow Scrap Challenge quilt!

I do have a list of the colors needed for the final blocks.  I have started out with prepping up a gray one while the gray scrap bin was out.

These blocks are so easy to sew, I am pretty confident I will meet my goal!

Oh Scrap! : Yellow

A new month means a new Rainbow Scrap Challenge color.
February is the color Yellow!

First up, I made two quarter log cabin blocks.  I decided to use mostly golds as they looked best with the more muted blocks I have finished to date.

And I also sewed up two of my zigzag blocks - one in golds and one in bright yellow.
I need only six more blocks to have enough for this donation quilt.  I have identified which colors I still need so its completion just depends on the when the appropriate colors are called. (Or I may just sew them up just so I can start something new!)

I still have my garden quilt blocks to finish this month but I just didn't find time tis week to work on them.  Hopefully by next Sunday they will be finished.

Oh Scrap! : Red

I can't tell you how much I have been looking forward to having Rainbow Scrap Challenge blocks to sew again.  It was great to get my red scraps (January's color) out and start sewing.

I haven't had a lot of time to sew this last week but I did get out all of my RSC blocks and see what I had left over from last year.  I still have about 11 blocks to make for my zig zag quilt.  I have a bright red from last year so I thought I would pull out some dark burgundy scrap and make a dark red block.

I finished the block and added to the rest.  It really blended right in with the black and brown blocks!
Hopefully we have some bright colors in the near future to give this project a much needed punch.  But I am really happy with how it is coming together!
