Oh Scrap! : Purple Switch Plates

I am feeling like I am catching up a bit.  I still haven't even looked at my orange scraps for August but I am slowly cleaning up the loose ends from so many projects.

Before I put my purple scrap bin away (for RSC July), I cut a bunch of sets for my little switchplate blocks.  There are purple "outies" with blue "innies" and red "outies" with purple "innies".  I haven't had a chance to get these back up on a design wall in quite a few months.  They finish at 3 x 5" so I will need quite a few for a quilt.  I am in no hurry to finish this one.

I am in a hurry to finish up my placemat project.  I was doing a bit of cleaning and was so excited to find all of these partially sewn bits.  They were in a bag with some scraps.  I think it was an abandoned scrap vortex a friend of mine had started.  Now they are going to be made into placemats.  There are probably enough pieces to make 8 - 10 mats.  This should speed up the process this week.

I am hoping this week, I will be able to get the last two letters for my banner completed.  I need to get out my orange scraps and start cutting for various blocks. Plus I need to get more placemats finished.

It is going to be a busy week!

August Placemats

I know I showed you a few placemats earlier this month, but I have a few more that I finished this month.

I am still working my way through the purple scraps.  Lots of triangles and tiny strings in this color.  I think I only have about two more to do and then I can move onto orange.

I also used some bits from the orphan block suitcase to make these two mats.

That brings the total up to 136 placemats.  I am still hoping to hit 200 by November.
That means I had better get sewing!

(And because I always get asked - I trim these to 11 x 15 and they will be donated to Meals on Wheels to go out with one of the holiday meals.)

We are finally getting a couple days of cooler weather so I will be outside as much as I can this weekend. Not sure that a lot of sewing will be taking place!

Hope you have fun plans for the weekend...

Oh Scrap! : Another Very Productive Day

On Saturday, I spent the day sewing with a good friend.  Instead of bringing a whole bag with lots of sewing options, I brought ONE project.

The project I took were my scrappy paper-pieced letters.

I stayed focused and finished my way through the blue letters.

The color orange was next and I completed the letter D and T.  Even though we gabbed a ton, I am so pleased I finished 5 of these letters.

I still have the color purple to do.  For that color, I have the letters E and N to do.  But I am motivated now so maybe I will finish those up this week.

I put all the letters completed to date up on the wall.  The next step will be to start deciding on spacing, trimming the letters and piecing all the background fabrics.

I have about a month to get this all finished as I hope to put it up in my booth at the Westside Quilters Guild Quilt Show in early October.  I will be the featured quilter there.

Did you have a productive week?

Just In Time!

I finished my Mercyful Quilt just in the nick of time.

The final link-up is on this Sunday over at Bernie's blog (Needle and Foot). I knew I needed to buckle down and I am pleased I actually met the deadline.

I started out making green blocks but quickly found out I did not have a bunch of large scraps.  I used the method Preeti shared on her blog.  So next I had to dig into my blue scraps.  I found the same problem there.

I dug into my purple bin and found enough scraps to finish the blocks I needed.  I decided to keep the background really scrappy.  I shared how I went about doing that in this post.

I tried to initially scatter the three colors but I really didn't like how it looked. (Sorry, no photo.)  So I decided to group the colors diagonally.  I thought I would go with that layout and I am really pleased with how it turned out.

I quilted it with a grid using a serpentine line.  The block design makes this quilting really easy.  I found an old green print for the back and used some striped scraps for the binding.  I had some bold blue, green and purple stripe prints but none of them were big enough for the entire quilt.  So I attached them together so they would fall around the quilt close to those colors.  It worked perfectly!

I will be sending this quilt off next week.  A big thanks to Bernie and Pretti for hosting the event and to all the sponsors who donated prizes.

Next, I am going to focus on my Paper-pieced letters (for my show booth banner) and my June UFO quilt.  I hope both of those projects become finishes soon too.

Have a great weekend!

Oh Scrap! : Mercyful Progress

I am trying really hard to stay focused on finishing some of my projects.  So when I had some time this weekend, I put all of my Mercyful blocks up on the design wall and started playing with layouts.

I tried quite a few different layouts and decided that I liked this one best.  There are a couple dark blocks I might move out of the center but I think I am ready to start sewing this one up.  I already have a blue and green backing picked out so I am hoping to get this one finished up soon!

What scraps have you played with this week!

Proof I Have Been Sewing

I have been focused on some home improvements over the last couple of months.  That has really been invading my sewing time.  But hopefully soon everything will be finished for the year.

(Oh, I can't wait!)

I feel like I have been not getting anything done on my projects but I keep reminding myself I am making some progress.

I have finished another nine placemats in the last few weeks.

These two blue ones came out of the Orphan block/spare parts block.  The turquoise binding is a bit bright but I am trying to use up the solids that I have.

A few more from the orphan block box.  I had a bunch of these test blocks for a design I was considering.

Here are some from my purple scrap bin.  These are the scraps I am still working on.  Little piles of purple scraps are all over my house.  It is a good thing it is my favorite color!

I am now up to 130 completed placemats!  These will be donated to Meals on Wheels at the end of the year.  I am hoping for 200 but I am not sure I will make it.

...but I am sure going to try!

Wishing you all a fun weekend!

Oh Scrap! : Finally Some Sewing

It has been a week since I posted something!

I didn't have a finished quilt to share on Friday and I haven't really started anything new so it is pretty silent around here.

I did get my four purple Chaser blocks finished for the month of July.  I think I already have my orange blocks done so now I should have enough blocks to put the quilt top together.  I just need an empty design wall so I can plan the layout.

Hopefully soon this one will be a finish!

These blocks aren't made from scraps, but I did get four more of these churn dash variation blocks finished.

I only have four more blocks to complete.  In fact, the last four blocks are all in process next to my sewing machine.  These blocks go together very quickly.

I still have a lot of leftover fabric so I am starting to think of ways to use some of it.  I plan on adding a black/brown swirl fabric for the sashing.  I will also use some of the smaller scraps from the blocks for cornerstones.

I was thinking about adding some flip corners to the sashing and turning that cornerstone into a star.  But the more I look at it, the more I think I like it without.  The feel of this quilt just feels more round and not spikey.

Have an opinion, feel free to let me know in the comments.
