UFO Finish

 Last December, a friend and I decided to have a UFO challenge in 2022.  We chose 12 UFOs and decided that every month we would draw a number and try and finish that project.

I was doing great until June hit and my life got busy.

The June project was to make a quilt to use up more of this neutral fabric stack.  Normally I don't put an unstarted quilt on my UFO list.  But these fabrics don't fit in my stash very well so I felt making a quilt from these leftovers would be the best option.

Use up as much as I can!

I decided to make these churn dash variation blocks.  I am sure they have a name but I don't know what they are called.  I just know they were fast and easy to make.

The blocks have been finished for a few weeks but I didn't know how I wanted to finish it off.  Once I got all the sashing on, I couldn't decide if I wanted a border.  It would have to be a scrappy border because I was out of big pieces of yardage.

I finally decided to just quilt it up as is and call it finished!  I have had a backing for this quilt for years.  I have no idea where it came from - I don't remember buying it either.

I just know it is cute and worked great on the back.

The first quilt I made with these fabrics was this one.  I think I made it in 2013.

I also made this strata quilt from the leftovers in 2017.

I don't know why I bought so much fabric in these colors.  I must have really liked them at one time. I still had quite a bit of fabric leftover but I decided to finally just stick it in the stash.  

So June's UFO is finally finished, and I am now moving onto July's.  It is my kitchen valiances.  I did go out and buy all the hardware so this one should get finished soon too.

I love Grunge fabric, and it is the basic of the month at Fat Quarter Shop.  They have tons of colors and lots of precut combinations.  Time to stock up.

UFO Challenge Status

 I am still making progress on my goal of reducing my UFOs in 2022.

I have finished all of the projects drawn in January through May.  I am still working on my June project.

Here are the blocks I am making this month.  

They will finish at 12" and I really like how they look.

I know I don't have enough of the taupe background fabric.  But I am hoping to switch to something else and make it looked planned.

Right now I have ten blocks completed with this background.  I do have enough for a couple more blocks but I think I will stop here.  These equate to half the blocks needed for the quilt.

Today I pulled out another background fabric that I think will work for the rest of the blocks.

Here is the first block...

And here it is up on the wall.  I plan to put some sort of sashing in between the blocks.  I have a lot of fabrics to use up so I am not sure yet what that will look like.  At least now I know I have a solution for the rest of the blocks and I can move forward.

I haven't even started my July project.  I remodeled my kitchen in 2013 and I still need to sew two valances out of this mod fabric.  My hold up is actually how I am going to hang them.  So tomorrow I am off to DIY stores and hopefully I will find all the hardware I need to move this one forward too!

June UFO Challenge

 For me, 2022 is all about reducing the number of UFOs I have.  At the beginning of the year, a close friend wanted to join me so we made a little challenge.  So far I have completed every project that has been drawn.  But then came June...

June's project is to make another quilt from a box of neutral fabrics that are left over from this strata quilt.  I probably have enough fabric to make two quilts! (I didn't pull it all out of the box).

Normally this would not be counted as a UFO because no fabric has been cut.  But these fabrics don't fit well with my other stash so it is best to just keep them together.

Even though it is the last week of the month, I decided to get started on it.  I had an idea for a simple 12" block in my head.  I liked the first one....

This afternoon I finished the 6th block.  My goal is to make a total of 20 blocks (a 4 x 5 setting).  I know I am going to run out of the beige background soon so I hope to get 10 blocks completed.  I have another neutral piece that I think will get me through the final 10 blocks.

There is no way I will finish this quilt in June.  But I am sewing with my friend later this week (who by the way is way behind in this challenge) so maybe we will decide not to draw a project for July.  That will give me another month to catch up!

Another Finished Tablerunner

 Can you believe it?  This is the third month in a row I have finished an older UFO!

I have had these six appliqued blocks squirreled away for over a decade.

With the help of a friend, I finally figured out what to do with them.  It required me making one more block but I quickly finished that one evening.

I added in some negative space and I made this sweet table runner.

I knew I didn't have the time to make enough blocks for a whole quilt. And I don't know why I felt like I couldn't just give the blocks away. I am happy that I came up with a solution that I could live with.

I decided to quilt it with some simple echo quilting.

I dug around in my Kaffe Fassett Collective fabric for a backing and binding.

My neighbor saw it and fell in love with it.  Now I have to decide if I am ready to sell it!

I still have many more UFOs to finish up so I am hoping I can keep up the momentum...

A UFO Finish

 I have said it in previous years, but truly, this year I am focused on finishing some old UFOs.

I am joining forces with a friend who has the same goal so we are supporting each other.

My project for February was to make something with these blocks.  I either needed to make more and make a quilt....

Or I initially thought about combining them with these old blocks into a wall hanging.

Once I thought about it, I decided to just turn these blocks into a large table runner.

When I started analyzing the project, there were a few things that were quite clear....

1. I did NOT want to make more blocks.

2. I did not need a wall hanging and I wasn't sure it was something that I could sell.

3. I put so much work into these, I couldn't just abandon the project.

4. I need to just keep it simple!

It measures 19 x 62" long.  I would love to keep it but it is larger than any table I own.

So it will be going into my Etsy shop and hopefully find a new home soon.

I am just happy I crossed these blocks off my list.

I found fabric for the borders, backing and binding in my stash.

I am super pleased with how it turned out.

So far I have finished UFOs in January and February.  I am thinking hard about abandoning my March project and replacing it with something else on my list.  Hmmmm...or maybe something new!

February's UFO Challenge

 It has been determined that this year is the year I am finishing some of my UFOs.  One of my friends agrees with me and has challenged me to see who can finish the most.  We are taking turns drawing numbers and each of us are working on each project.  Last month's project was finished last week.  This month is going to be a bit more challenging for me.

I have five of these Basketweave blocks that I started making in 2014.

And I also have 6 completed (and a few more started) of these applique blocks.

I was initially going to combine the two UFOs into one and make something like this.

I am now rethinking these and might make them back into two projects.  Yikes!

The month is already well on its way so I need to come up with a plan quick.  Later this week, I am sewing with my UFO buddy so I can get her input.

Either way, it is sure going to be a challenge to strike this one off my list!

An Older UFO Finish

 Back in early January, I had shared that a friend and I have challenged each other to paring down our UFO lists this year.  We picked 12 projects and then I drew a number for January.

Here is the project that came up for me.  I was gifted all these fabrics from a friend years ago - She had fallen out of love with them.  Part of the fabric was already cut into strips.  And there was already a backing piece, so I didn't want to break it up and put all the fabric in my stash.  Looks like January was the month I was going to finally do something with it.

I am proud to say I finished the quilt on the last day of January!

I decided to keep it really simple and make a stacked coin quilt with the fabrics.  I didn't want to be too fussy about the strip width so I didn't have to match seams.

I cut everything into 8.5" strips and sewed them together like the blocks above.  Then I just sewed them together into columns.

I think it looks pretty go!

I really like the quilting I did.  I quilted in horizontal lines about 1.5" apart.  Then I went back over some of the lines with a soft curve.

It measures about 60 x 70" so it is a nice sized lap quilt.  I will most likely list it in my Etsy shop.  I really like the quilt but I have just too many quilts around my hose right now.

Here is a photo of the lovely purple backing.  There was even a fun striped fabric in the pile for the binding.  I still have a lot of the fabric leftover but I ended up putting it all into fabric stash.

The UFO number for February has been drawn but my friend and I each have to spend time finding the projects drawn!  Mine is an ancient one...I will be sharing it soon. As soon as I find it!!

Oh Scrap! : Nothing Much to Share

 Most of this week's sewing was spent on finishing the blue scrappy quilt I shared Friday.  Other than that, there really hasn't been much progress made on anything else.

I did decide what to do with the stack of older fabrics I found.

I am going to make these blocks - alternating two different fabrics.  The strips are all varying sizes to the lengths of the blocks will all be different.  We shall see how they all work together.

I have cut all the pieces for a number of blocks, and I just need to find some time to sit and sew.

This Year's Focus

 For the past decade or so, I have taken the last few weeks of each year to ready my business for the new year, clean/organize my house and give thought to what I really want to accomplish over the next 12 months.  I also update all my work spreadsheets - including my list of all of my UFOs.

I ended up with 19 in case you were wondering!

A quilty friend and I always have a competition to see who ends the year with the least UFOs.  We tied for the second year in a row.  But what we both discovered is that we both do great at finishing the new starts but continue to carryover the older UFOs.

So we came up with a plan...

We made a list of 12 old projects and every month we will take turns choosing a number and we will at least try and make progress on that UFO.

So this month, I will be working with this pile of fabric I adopted from another friend.  A lot of the fabric is already cut into strips and the larger pieces look like about 1/8 yard cuts.  Not sure what the original plan was but I will figure something to make from it all.  There is even a backing fabric and a fun stripe I think I will use for the binding.

I am happy that the first UFO drawn looks like it will be something I can finish up.  It will start the year off with a success.  We shall see how long I can keep it up!

I'll Count the Finish

 I knew if I put my UFO fabric on my cutting board that something might get done.

I did get my tablecloth sewn for my little kitchenette.  I have a tutorial available for making the mitered corners.  This is the same technique I use for cloth napkins and curtains.

The fabric I used was just a bit small but it will work fine for right now. 

(Obviously I don't use this space because there is always so much stuff on the table.)

Another finish I am celebrating today is I completed the log cabin flimsey.  I found a backing and I am just waiting for time on my longarm to finish it up.  I love how it turned out and I can't wait to share it!
