Upcoming Events in Eugene Oregon

For all of you in the Eugene area, I just want to remind you that the Unbroken Thread annual quilt show hosted by the Pioneer Quilters is coming up soon.  The show will be held from April 5th through the 10th at the Lane County Historical Museum so be sure and mark your calendar.  

Now is the time to get in your entry information if you wish to show a quilt.  I am hoping you will be able to see my Pretty Gemstones quilt there. You may have seen it in the January McCall's Quilting magazine and I hope you get the chance to see it in person!.

And on Saturday March 19th, I will be teaching an English Paper Piecing class in Springfield at Our Sewing Room.  You can sign up for the class there or just contact me directly.  

It will be a fun afternoon so I hope you can join me!

Which reminds me, I really need to get back to this lovely EPP star block I am currently working on.  There is just not enough time......

Oh Scrap! : Scrap-A-Palooza! Quilt # 19 Part Three

It has been a long time since I have enjoyed so much time in my sewing room.  Not only did I get my Park Bench quilt top done, I also made huge progress on the current Scrap-A-Palooza quilt.

A couple of weeks ago, I shared a tutorial for making the improv blocks used in this quilt.  I had a number of odd shaped low volume scraps and red triangle scraps that I used for the blocks.  In no time at all, I sewed up a stack of 64 six inch blocks.

I thought today I would share some of the possible layouts for this humble little block.

By taking four blocks and putting all the red triangles in one area, you end up with a fun wonky star.  This layout also leaves a lot of negative space to practice free motion quilting.

You can also play around with the direction of the triangles.  In this layout, I started in a corner and spiraled in ending with a pinwheel in the center. 

Here is a layout with a mid-century feel.  Or it can be butterflies....

That is the great thing about improv is it can be interpreted many ways!

Here is one more layout I played with.  I am pretty sure I could have easily come up with at least a dozen more.

Now it is time for me to settle on a final layout and finish this quilt up.  Hopefully the next time you see this, it will be a finished quilt!

Park Bench Quilt Top Finish

I don't often celebrate the finish of just a quilt top but this one has been in the works for over a year!

When the Park Bench pattern came out, I knew it was going on my quilty bucket list.  I loved everything about the quilt that Julie Herman made for the cover of her pattern and decided I wanted mine exactly like it!  I think it is perfection as is!!   I was lucky enough to pick up the quilt kit at a ridiculous price through Craftsy at the end of 2014.

 I started the quilt in January of 2015.  At the beginning of each month, I would choose my fabrics to make two blocks.  I was in no hurry so I was really able to savor the process.

 Every month I was rewarded with two lovely block!

Soon two blocks became six...

By the Summer, my design wall was filled with these gorgeous blocks.

The blocks did sit for a month or two....

 But I did finally get them all sewn up into this wonderful quilt top!

I hope to start quilting this sometime in February.  First I want to take a refresher on Angela Walters Dot to Dot class out on Craftsy.  I love that I can go back anytime and review a course just before tackling a big custom quilt job like this one is going to be!  Stay Tuned!!
