A Geese Migration Class

I am just popping in today to let you know I will be teaching my Geese Migration quilt at the Umpqua Valley Quilt Show in Roseburg Oregon.  The class will be held on Friday April 24th.  

It will be a fun day turning everyday scraps into colorful blocks.  So that they can join others and make amazing quilts.  If you want to join us, you can sign up for the class here.

The formal announcement:

Due to the corona virus concerns, the 2020 Umpqua Valley Quilt show is canceled.  This was a difficult decision to make.  We will be contacting all parties that have made commitments to the show within the next few days. The raffle quilt drawing will still be held as scheduled and the recipient will be notified April 26, as planned.  

We want to thank everyone for their understanding and continued support.

An Upcoming Class - Join the Fun!

Even though I usually teach or give presentations a couple times a month, many of them are not often open to the public.  

So when I have something scheduled anyone can attend, I always like to get the word out.

(I try to list them on my Classes page but I don't always get a chance to write a post about them.)

I will be teaching my Improv Garden class in Coos Bay Oregon on Saturday April 11th.  The class will be hosted by Threads That Bind.

This is a technique class and I will be talking a lot about how to use color and value to create different effects.  You will be given a pattern sheet that includes the layout for my Garden quilt along with the layout for my Nighttime Skies below.

And for those that want  to learn the technique but not commit to a big quilt, you can make just a pillow cover.  We will be going over how to make that in the class too.

If you are interested in the class, you will need to contact the quilt store directly. I don't see the class up on their website yet, but I am sure you can give them a call and they will help you out.  

They are a great group of folks!

Hopefully if you are in Oregon you can join us.  It will be a fun day!

Nighttime Sky

I have finished my Nighttime Sky improv wall hanging.  

I used the same technique I used on my Improv Garden and pillow.  I really like how it turned out!

The size of this piece is just 36" square and is made from navy and yellow scraps.

I changed up the lighting here so you can see the dark fabrics in the background really have a lot going on in them.  There is a lot of purples, turquoise and gray that add a lot of interest.

On the back, I used a New York City piece I have been hoarding for years.  It was released before 9/11 so the twin towers are on it (look upper left right next to the quilted circle).  The colors really do seem to glow on it.

This one will be another sample for my Improv class.

Fun in Southern Oregon

I recently spent a few days with the Umpqua Valley Quilters Guild in Roseburg Oregon.  

They are such a great group!

(In fact, you should mark your calendars - they have a wonderful Quilt Show coming up in April 2020.  You can check out their Facebook page here to learn more.)

I am very bad about getting out my phone and taking photos but I did snap a photo of everyone with one of their finished blocks in the Spin! class.  This group had a wonderful selection of colors and fabrics.  I look forward to seeing some finished quilt tops soon!

Geese Migration Table Runner

When I originally started working on my Geese Migration quilt, I had a few different layout ideas.   For the magazine publication, I ended up using an on-point design.  But one of the designs I considered was a staggered layout.

When I teach this class, I like to talk about some optional layouts, so I have been wanting to make a small sample of this layout for visual purposes.

So I whipped up four blocks and made a tablerunner.

I set the blocks in a nice gray and backed it with a fun floral that has been in my stash for years.

 I always have so much fun finding just the perfect scrap for these blocks.  This runner is now over at The Stitchin' Post in Sisters Oregon advertising my upcoming class in October.  I think there is still space if you want to sign up!

My Improv Garden

It has been too hot for me to be working in my outside gardens, so I have been keeping myself entertained by working on my "inside garden".

I finally finished my improv garden quilt and I can't wait to share it!

This quilt started out with the color green...I love it in my gardens but I struggle to use it in my quilting.  So one day as I was pondering why all those different shades work in my garden but not in fabric, I decided I needed to just make an indoor garden and play with the color green.

I decided to make some lovely improv flowers.  First I was inspired by the poppy - red with teal green foliage.

Sunflowers, peonies and nasturtiums soon followed.

So here it is...an aerial (or drone) view of my garden!

This quilt was a great exercise for me to play with my green scraps.  Thinking of each fabric as a leaf fighting for space with its neighbor helped me put all these colors shades together in a single quilt.

When I went to quilt it, I decided just to quilt each bloom with a dense spiral in the thread color of the flower.  I used a pine green thread and quilted leaves into all the green background spaces.

There is texture galore in this quilt!

On the back I used a green and black leaf patterned fabric I have had for years.  You can see the big yellow quilted flower.

So the back view of the quilt is a garden too!

 I used to teach this improv flower technique years ago and I think I will use this quilt to promote the class again.  I really like how this quilt turned out and I would love to help others make their own indoor scrappy garden!

Oh Scrap! : More Blue Blocks

I still have a few more blue Rainbow Scrap Challenge blocks to share this month.

I made four more garlic knot blocks using blue, black/white, and taupe.  I have to admit that these are my current favorite block on my design walls.

Here are the two colors together that I have completed so far.

Oh, but look what can happen with a few rotations!

This is simply just a happy accident - it wasn't intentional.  But I have learned when designing a block, when you create a "pattern" of fabric/color within a block, it can open up lots of pattern options in the quilt layout.

And while I had the blue bin out, I decided to make a few Geese Migration blocks in preparation for some upcoming classes.  I will be at a Scrap Retreat in Eugene Oregon and teaching at the Stitchin' Post in Sisters Oregon.  Last I checked, there were still a few openings in all of them.
