Be Counted

Just popping in today to share my latest block finish.

I made this block to remind everyone in the US to be sure and complete their 2020 census.  The census can be filled out by mail, online or by phone.  It just takes a few moments to complete and it helps put money into your community. 

 If you haven't yet, please go to 2020Census.gov and be counted.

There are no citizenship questions on the questionnaire.

And if you want to know more about how I made the lettering for this block, I coated the back of my fabric with a thin coat of Fabric Mod Podge.  Once it is dry, you can cut it into small pieces and top stitch it without it fraying.  This block measures approximately 12 x 14".

A Special Finish for my Nephew

Why do I always wait until the last minute!

My only nephew graduated from high school this year and will be going to Creighton University this Fall.  He is going to be pitching for their baseball team and I am so very proud of him.

He has known he was going to this university for over a year, but I decided to wait until a few weeks before he was leaving home to work on his quilt.  And what I thought would take me only a day or two ended up taking me forever!

But I have to say, I am quite proud of how well it turned out.  Of course there was nothing team-themed I could purchase that I could use for his quilt so I ended up drawing and appliqueing his school logo to the center of his quilt.

I used a raw edge method using fabric mod-podge.  The detail you can get from this method is simply amazing.  I would certainly do it a bit differently if I attempt something like this again.  

(Which I will admit is probably not likely - certainly not at this large scale!)

My initial plan was to make the quilt more like a whole-cloth but the bright blue was just too much for me.  I ended up cutting a whole bunch of plaid and chambray yardage I had in my stash that I actually purchased for some shirts.  I must really love this guy!

I did quilt his name directly into the patchwork.

I kept the quilting fairly simple and tried to make the quilt as durable as possible.  I put a silly text bubble fabric on the back.  Most of the bubbles are filled with "Zzzzzz".  However, I might just have to hide some other words in there just to see if he finds them.

The quilt is 72" x 88".  The center piece is 40" square.

It is a relief to get this one done and shipped!

Quilty 365 Finish

Okay, so I didn't do 365 circles but I did sew little circles for over 6 months!

I finally got this one all quilted up and bound.  It has been a bit warm still in the evenings so the hand sewing took longer than usual.

 It is certainly filled with a lot of fun fabric scraps.  A big thanks to QuiltyFolk for thinking up this idea.  And kudos to all those who are still making daily squares!

This will be the last month I will be linking up.

I decided to donate this one to a kids' charity so I used some bright novelty fabric on the back.

 I wanted this quilt to be very durable so I quilted the entire top with all different sizes of squared spirals.  I quilted right over the applique and did all the quilting in a navy colored thread.

Finishing this quilt was my July OMG goal with Red Letter Quilts.  It is the last Friday of the month so I am just squeaking by!

Quilty 365 Finished Flimsy - OMG

Once I made the decision to make my Quilty 365 project a lot smaller than originally planned, it did not take me any time at all to sew up the blocks I had pieced so far.

During the month of June, I still hand appliqued 28 circles but rather than sew them into more blocks, I used them to finish out the outer border on the quilt top.

I really do love how the finished flimsy turned out but I am so glad to have this project off my list.  It really became a chore to try and sew a circle each day.  

I guess I need to change the name of the quilt from Quilty 365 to Quilty 168!

I am going to make quilting and binding this project my OMG goal for July.  I can see me easily folding this one up and stashing it away.  Thank goodness Heidi at Red Letter Quilts helps us to stay focused on finishes!

Quilty 365 - Changing Direction

In the month of May, I finished sewing 4 more of my Quilty 365 weekly blocks.  

 Not even halfway through the year, and I am finding myself no longer enjoying this project.  So I think it is time to make a plan for finishing it.  I knew going in that I might not be able to stick with it.

Right now I have twenty 12" blocks completed.  Here is how they look up on the design wall.  I think its present size and the fact that there are lots of novelty prints used to make the circles, that this will make a great charity quilt for a kid's organization.


I do like how it is turning out so I am really glad I did the project!

So in June, I will still be appliqueing circles but they will be made into these rectangular blocks.

These units will be used to complete a top and side border so that the circles go around the entire outer edge of the quilt.  Right now I just need 22 more circles - certainly doable by the end of June!

Oh Scrap! : Quilty 365

Happy May Day!  Every May first, I have fond memories of when I was a small child. I would make paper baskets and fill them with handpicked flowers and leave them on my neighbors' front door.  I might have to start doing that again...but I fear I will not be able to run fast enough to get away after I ring the doorbell!  

With April behind us, it is time again to share my progress on my Quilty 365 blocks.  The blocks for April are the four along the bottom.



I have been keeping up with my blocks but I am ready to admit, I am rethinking this quilt.  Don't get me wrong, I really like it but I am not sure it is a quilt I want to keep for myself.















This quilt is going to be huge when it is completed.  Here is a photo of all 18 blocks I have completed since the beginning of the year.


If I stop at 40 blocks, I can turn them into two very cute I-spy donation quilts.  I am not quite ready to make that decision but it will be an option later this summer.

 

...But it has been a great project for using my scraps!

Something old into something new!

I have been wanting to make a scrappy medallion quilt for a number of years now.  As I was doing a bit of project organization, I got to thinking that I could probably combine a few WIPs and start putting one together.

With just one quilt, I can cross another bucket list quilt off the lineup and finish two WIPs!

 Remember these pretty  Basket Weave Star blocks I was paper piecing?

I thought they paired nicely with some needle turned applique blocks I made about a decade ago.  

(I think it is time to admit I will not be turning them into the queen size quilt I had originally planned.)

Maybe use the applique as the center medallion?

 Or I can use the Basket Weave Stars in the center and use the floral blocks as one of the outside borders.  Hmm....

I think I will leave them up on my design wall for a bit and see what happens.

But a medallion quilt will be the next project off my quilty bucket list.  Once I decide where I am starting, I will start sharing my progress!
