Oh Scrap! : A Scrap Explosion

It appears that scraps have exploded all over my house.

I brought home a bunch of Christmas scraps from a friend's house to make some holiday gifts - they are still needing to be sorted.  They have taken up residence on my dining room table for now.

I was also gifted (from another friend) a giant garbage bag filled to the brim with all sorts of yardage and fabric scraps.  I have about half of it sorted and put away.  The rest of it is in piles all over my living room floor.

I am still sewing away on this scrappy quilt top.  I really have just one more section to fill in and then I can sew up all the sections.  It is actually about 50 x 60" right now.

The remaining scraps for this project are all piled in the middle of my sewing room floor.

I guess I noticed that my coffee table had nothing on it so I decided to start pulling and cutting some brown scraps to frame these florals I cut a long time ago.

There are scraps everywhere!!
My plan is to spend all day today organizing as much of them as I can.

The good news is that means I will have lots to share with you in the next few weeks :)

Orphan Block Quilt Finish

Earlier this month, a quilty friend of mine gave me a giant stack of orphan blocks.   I was in heaven and started sewing right away.

I think this was the last photo I had shared.  I pulled out some of the blocks from the bag and decided to make a kid's quilt.

Well, I have already sewn them into a cute little quilt.  I wanted to use a print background and I knew the blocks would get lost as they were, so I framed them in a rainbow of solids - all from my scrap bins.

I didn't have enough log cabin blocks so I used some checkerboard blocks I found.  I used gray spacers to make them the right side.  I even added in a few small 4 patches I found.  I love using everything I can squeeze into these quilts.

I had to do a bit of repair on the hedgehog and the round block.  I just tried to find some fabrics from my scraps that matched the closest.

I had the perfect fabric in my stash for the back.  I finished it off with a gray binding.

It turned out kinda cute!  The backing I used was left over trimmings from a previous quilt backing.  I really like how it works with the blocks.

I will be gifting this quilt back to my friend that gave me all the blocks.  I think leftovers from five different projects went into making this little quilt. A lot of the prints in the blocks are all fun novelty fabrics - there are so many fun things to find.

I am already working on a second quilt, so I hope to share that one soon.

Oh Scrap! : Definition of a New Project

I felt like I could finally clean up some in my sewing room having finished my placemat project. There were little piles of scraps and fabric all over the place.

I found a stack of fabric that I wanted to bag up for another day.  I pulled out "the drawer I never talk about" to stuff it in there and was drawn to a few other bags that had some interesting colors.

I refrained and stuffed it back in the drawer and proceeded to sit and sew.  One thing I can say about the placemat project is that it has been a great leader/ender project.

As I was sewing, I really felt like I needed one...

I decided to just use all those odd shaped triangles I saw in one of those bags together.  I figured I could sew them up and just put them in the spare parts box.  No harm...and not a new project!

After all, 2022 is the year to finish UFOs.  And I really want to end the year with a low number.

I, of course, quickly sewed all the triangles up and then decided to add a few small scraps to them.  Just some simple mindless sewing.

One thing I love about just sewing bits of color together is that it can build confidence in color choices.  I pondered how these colors would look with a touch of red.  So I can easily say I am just learning new color combinations at this point.  Still not a project...Right?!?

However, I might need your help to explain how all these pieces up on my design wall are not a new project.  At what point do I have to put it on my list? 😂

What scrappy projects are you working on?

Last of the Placemats

I have been working on placemats for almost ten months now!  I did enjoy making them but I have to admit, I am glad this project is finished and I can clean up my sewing room.  Working continually with these tiny scraps has wreaked havoc around my hose....They were everywhere!

When I started this project, I purged my fabric stash of unloved pieces that would make good backings for placemats.  About two months ago, I started focusing on making the tops for the backings I had.  That is why for the last few postings, the colors have been a mix.  These last seven placemats used up the last of the unloved fabric I had pulled.  You can also tell, I used strips mostly so they assembled up quickly.

I also used up a hug pile of batting pieces I had been saving for decades.  I still have a few larger pieces but I can use those for frankenbatting in the future.

The final count is 173 placemats.  This stack is 26 inches high and weighs about 24 pounds.  The place I am delivering them to is about a quarter mile from my house.  I should walk them there but they are too unwieldy.

These are all going to Meals on Wheels to be handed out to my region in Eugene Oregon.  I was told there are more than enough for my neighbors - the rest will go to another area for distribution.  I think they are planning for them to go out with a holiday meal.

I trimmed them all down to 11 x 15".

You would think they would have used up all of my scraps.
Truthfully....I am not sure I see a dent in them!

Have a good weekend everyone!

Oh Scrap! : Last Chaser Blocks

It looks like fall is finally coming to the PNW.  Temperatures are still a bit warm during the night, but the nights are cold and the leaves are slowly changing colors.  So a lot of my time this week has been spent doing outdoor chores.

I did get the final ten Chaser blocks completed for my RSC quilt.  Here are the first six.

Here are the final four.  I decided to add in a couple gray blocks because my scrap bin is overflowing.

(I used my Chaser pattern as inspiration for these blocks.  Note that the pattern does not have the solid flip corners.  But they are really easy to add!  That is what Scrap Mixology is all about.)

I finally have enough blocks to finish this quilt.  I still need to spend some time moving around the blocks but I hope to sew up this quilt top soon.

I should start thinking about what blocks I am going to make for next year's Rainbow Scrap Challenge quilts.  There are so many on my list!

On The Design Wall

Now that I have caught up on many of my projects, I am able to get out a stash quilt I started earlier this year.

I went through all of my Kaffe Fassett stash and scraps and cut up enough big hexagons for the size quilt I wanted.  I used the Hex N More Ruler by Jaybird Designs. I also started cutting a few of the solid triangles I need.  Then life got in the way and these pretties were set aside.

I had an empty design wall (behind my longarm) so I put them all up so I can start filling in the spaces with solid-colored triangles.  I am sure I will need to move around a few prints as I fill everything in.  Then I can start pulling pieces down and moving them into my sewing room to sew.  I am guessing that will happen later this month.

I am really looking forward to working on something new!

Oh Scrap! : Orphan Block Bananza

Saturday, I sewed with some good friends.  It is always nice to spend a day with other quilters.

While I was there, one of my generous friends gave me a giant stack of orphan blocks.  She does a lot of donation quilts for kids so I find these blocks loads of fun.  I plan on making a few quilts that I will gift back to her so she can donate them to the organization of her choice.

As soon as I got home, I instantly organized them a bit and started putting some up on the design wall.  Not sure that this is the final design but it will be perfect as a starting point.

I initially pulled a blue pin dot fabric to use as the background (on the left) but I think I need to go back to my stash and find a print with a bit of a cream background.  The white looks too stark for me.

I am sure I will be playing with all these blocks for weeks!

Placemat Status Check

I received a call from my contact at Meals on Wheels to start coordinating the delivery of my donated placemats.  She would like me to deliver them to their office before the end of October.

This is a few weeks earlier than I was planning so my goal of 200 is probably not going to happen.

I thought I would get a status check on where I am currently at and what is hiding out in the pipeline.

I finished sewing on the bindings on a few colors.  Here are a few in orange.

Followed by a few in purple.

I also made these green stripy ones.  When I started this project, I pulled a bunch of unloved fabrics for the backings and I have been just making simple designs to use up all the fabrics I pulled.

Here are some I made using some of my orphan blocks.  I think these bring this month's total up to 13.

When I add these to the big stack hiding away in my closet, I now have a total of 164 placemats all completed.  The stack is now 25" tall. I know I have four more just awaiting binding and I think there are two or three waiting to be quilted.  So I think 170 will be about all I will get done.  I need to shut off the pipeline pretty soon.

I will share the last few I complete before I deliver them later this month.  It will be nice to finally be able to clean up my sewing room - this project has created havoc in my house because there have been little stacks of scraps all over the place.

Oh Scrap! : No Sewing Weekend

All of my time this week was spent working on the banner I shared in my last post.

This weekend, I will be spending at a quilt show so I don't have anything to share for today.

I won't be doing any sewing but the students in my class will be busy making their rendition of my Two Bits pattern.  It is always fun to see how they use their scraps to make a similar quilt.

Hopefully I remember to take some photos to share!
