Bloom : Scrap Mixology Module #4

For a few months now, I have been sharing a number of scrappy basket blocks that I have been making.  Today I am ready to start sharing the finished quilts.  The blocks were for my fourth module of my Scrap Mixology Series.  This one I am calling Bloom.

For the first quilt I made, I used a bunch of Kaffe Fassett scraps.  I loved how the bright vibrant colors looked in the blocks.  When the blocks are placed on point, they look like baskets full of blooms.

So that is how I laid them out for this first quilt design.

The instructions in the pattern create enough pieces to make two blocks.  I played around with the pieces and made each block unique.

This block would make a great RSC block.  Each month you could make a few baskets of each color.  All of the vases could be the same fabric or maybe use some multi colored scraps.

As you can see in my quilt, I even made the background scrappy.

The Bloom pattern is available (along with all of my Scrap Mixology patterns) in both my Etsy and my Payhip shop.  The pattern is 13 pages and a pdf download.  It has the instructions for making the block and then shares numerous ways you can lay these blocks out.  Let's just say these blocks really blossom into some amazing designs.  I will be sharing some other quilts I made over the next month.

The pattern also has a few modifications you can make to the block to change the look - which will give each layout a new flair.  The Scrap Mixology modules are all made to use your scraps to create unique quilts from simple blocks.

This is the first quilt of three quilts I have made so far using this block.  I am already thinking of a new way I can play with color placement so I think I will be starting a new quilt shortly.
I have to get these ideas out of my head :)

I hope some of you are finding these Scrap Mixology modules as inspiring as I do!

Strawberry Lemonade

Or, it can be called Kissing Pinwheels.  I think of both when I think of this quilt.

I had a bunch of trimmed or "bonus" triangles in blacks and whites so I decided to turn them into tiny pinwheels.  I knew they would be perfect for one of my Scrap Mixology designs.  Then I pulled one of my favorite color combinations of scraps.

There are so many ways to lay out these blocks - but I loved this one where the pinwheels "kiss".

Now this quilt just needs a sweet little girl to gift it too!

Even though I have been quilting for decades, I am still amazed at how small changes in fabric, layout or colors can make the same block look so different.  You can see other ways to lay out these blocks in my Two Bits pattern - the second module of my Scrap Mixology pattern series.

I hope those who celebrated, had a nice Thanksgiving.  I am thankful so many of you join me on this creative journey - I really do appreciate all of you!

Time to finally hit buy on my cart :)

Scrap Mixology : Two Bits

Behind the scenes, I have been working diligently to complete more of my newest pattern series and their supporting quilts.

Today I am ready to announce my second Scrap Mixology module - Two Bits.

This module is to help you turn some of your scrappy strings into some fun and colorful quilts.
You might remember this RSC quilt I finished in 2019.
This quilt was the inspiration for this pattern sheet.

The Scrap Mixology pattern series all follow the same format.  They are designed to help you sew up your scraps so don't expect to find yardage requirements (not that you can't pull fabrics out of your stash).  Each module is designed around a standard block with cutting and sewing instructions for the block.  There is also a convenient table with block requirements for standard quilt sizes to help you determine how many blocks you need to make for the size quilt you desire.

In subsequent pages, I share some ideas on how to use color and block placement/rotation to create lots of fun layout designs.  Hopefully these ideas will trigger some ideas of your own.

Also included in the pattern are additional ideas on how to change the look of your block through some simple changes.  I include new cutting requirements for these ideas and share how this change affects the look of a quilt.

So one block can be made into dozens of layouts!
You become a Scrap Mixologist like me :)

In fact, I have recently shared a quilt using the Mixology concepts published in this module.  This soft scrappy quilt swapped out the 9-patch with some orphan blocks and was laid out using a stacked block design.

Essentially the same block but with two very different looks.

One of the materials included in the Two Bit pattern is the formula for figuring the inset triangles for on-point or diagonal block layouts.  I always have to hunt for this so I am happy to know I can easily locate it now just by referring to my pattern.

All of my Scrap Mixology available patterns (including Two Bits) can be purchased through either my Payhip pattern shop or through my Etsy store.  Once you pay, they can be immediately downloaded and you can start sewing those scraps.

Enjoy your weekend by sewing up those scraps!

Scrap Mixology : Well Suited

Back in late 2019, I started working on my goal of writing a book.  I decided to spend tons of hours secretly sewing and putting together ten block designs for a book proposal.  I held myself to the goal of sending it off for review by the end of March.

Well....crap!

So much for well laid plans.  I still sent it off even though businesses were not sure what the future would look like and I waited for over 5 long months for them to make a final decision on it.  It was not the best book to release during a pandemic.  My plans were for a scrap book that didn't look like any books out there and it was kind of a format you had to pick up and look at to see the great ideas it had inside.

So I wasn't surprised (or disappointed) to finally hear they were going to pass.  In the five months I was waiting for an answer, I devised a plan B to just create some pdf modules that can be bought and instantly downloaded.

Quilters can just buy the blocks they like or that best fit the scraps they have.

The working title for the book was "Become a Scrap Mixologist".  I am just calling these Scrap Mixology Modules.  They are specifically designed to help you use your scraps - sorry you will not find any yardage requirements in these modules.  Today, I am releasing the first module "Well Suited".  It is a 13 page booklet that includes the instructions for a basic block along with a helpful table letting you know how many blocks you need for 4 quilt sizes.

But the pages go on to show you how you can place lights/darks within the blocks to create different patterns in the quilt layout.

You will see I take the Scrap Mixology philosophy further because I also share some ideas for swapping in different components within the block to change the look.

So one block can be made into dozens of different looking quilts...all made from scraps.  If you have been following my blog, you know this is a concept I share often.

Now you can have lots of scrappy ideas at your fingertips.

Here is another quilt I finished using the Well Suited block.  But I used the instructions for adding a pinwheel in place of the 9 patch.  I still used the light/dark alternate block layout using some blue scraps I had.  I also used two colors for the pinwheels.

I really love the look of this design.  It was fun to quilt too.  I swirled in the pinwheels and then I swirled in the blue diamond.  It was easy to use the piecing for my spacing.

These Scrap Mixology modules will hopefully be used as a lookbook to generate ideas on how to tailor a unique quilt to the scraps of the reader.  I will be releasing new modules as I finish up the quilt samples and all the layout diagrams for each block.

Right now, the Well Suited module is available for download from my Payhip pattern shop.  Once you download it, you can just print the page(s) you want for the design you choose.  If you decide to try it out and make some quilts, I hope you share them either here on the blog on Sunday's Oh Scrap link up or on your social media with the hashtags #scrapmixology or #wellsuitedblock.
I can't wait to see what you come up with!

Update:  I have also listed these patterns for instant download in my Etsy shop at a slightly higher price (to cover the higher fees on Etsy).

As I release each module, you can find them on my Scrap Mixology pattern page here on my blog.  I will also be sharing more blocks and quilts made from this module...and you just might see some made by some friends!

Blogger's Quilt Festival - Fall 2018 Second Entry

For my second entry into Amy Ellis' Blogger's Quilt Festival, I have a brand new finish to share!

This quilt is called Summertime Blossoms.

I recently revisited a quilt design I had published in Easy Quilts back in 2015.  I called that quilt Nighttime Blossoms.

This quilt uses 8 fat quarters and I knew I wanted to make a new quilt using a bundle of Bonnie and Camille's Miss Kate collection I have been hoarding for years.  Some Kona Lime worked perfectly for the background.

It is a quick and easy block to make and I love that there are not a lot of seams to match.

Here are both the Nighttime and Summertime Blossoms quilts together.
Lighting has been so difficult this time of year to get any good pictures.

I even took this quilt out in the wild to try and get some good pictures.  The sun and shadows just never worked my way!

If you want to make your own quilt, I do have this pattern now for sale in both my Payhip and Etsy pattern shop. It is a great way to use up those fat quarters you have been hiding in your stash!

And don't forget to head to Amy's Creative Side to see all the other lovely quilts linked up for this year's festival.  There is so much inspiration to be found there!

Bamboo Shoots Quilt

First, I want to thank many of you for your thoughts on my last post regarding blogs.  Lots of links to favorite sites were shared and I have some great new blogs to follow!
I really appreciate all your support!

Today, I have some really exciting news to share.
I have finally written up a pattern for my Bamboo Shoots quilt!

My initial quilt was made using Robert Kaufman's Quilter's Linen.  I wanted to create a very mid-century or Danish modern feel with nice clean lines.

I really love how the apple green and chocolate brown looked together.
What can I say - I am a child of the seventies!

But you certainly don't need to use solids for this pattern.  Here is one I made using an eggplant marbled background and some Kaffe Fassett florals.
So rich and colorful!

To celebrate, I have marked down all of my patterns temporarily in both my Etsy shop and Payhip Store.  I should mention that because my patterns are now sold in stores, on Tuesday the 6th, I will be increasing their price up to a standard List Price (which is more than I have been selling them for in the past).  So if there is a pattern you have been wanting, this weekend is a great time to pick them up!

I wish you all a wonderful weekend!
I am getting a new fence installed soon so I will be busy cutting back foliage.
Thank goodness for the cooler weather!

Spreading a Little Joy

With all the new Christmas and holiday fabrics hitting the store this time of year, I thought it would be a great time to release my newest pattern.  This one is called Rejoice!

The finished piece measures 16" x 42" and is perfect for those leftover jellyroll strips.

The pattern has detailed instructions and easy to read graphics that make putting this together a breeze.  Whether you make one for yourself or for family and friends, now is the time to start planning those holiday projects.

I really like how it looks with a dark background fabric. I plan on doing a bit of shopping and making a few more with this Moda Grunge fabric.

My wonderful pattern tester has plans for making a few more before the holidays too.  Her daughter saw this one her mother made and put in an order for her own.

I think it makes a great wallhanging too.  Who doesn't want to spread a bit of Joy around?

If you would like to purchase the pattern, you can find it in both my Etsy shop and Payhip Store.  You can also find some of my other patterns there too.

And because I want to spread a little more Joy around, I am also hosting a pattern giveaway.  I will be giving away a .pdf copy of the pattern to three winners.  If you want to be in the draw, simply leave me a comment.  For an additional entry, simply share some Joy on your social media or pinterest boards and let me know that you did in another comment.
I will be drawing the winners on Monday June 27th.

***This giveaway is closed.  Thanks to all who entered.  Winners have been notified by email***

And if you go ahead and buy the pattern and your name is drawn as a winner, don't worry, I will gladly refund your money!

Thanks for your support!

A Really Big Finish!

I am so happy to announce I am finally releasing another pattern.
This one is called Spin!

This pretty blue and white one I made using half yard cuts but it is also designed to use scraps.  As you can see, even the border is pieced!

I really have a soft spot in my heart for two colored quilts.  And I love taking a traditional block and putting a new spin on it.  In this case, I did that literally!

My original quilt was made in red and light gray.  It is a perfect pattern for a confident beginner or the seasoned quilter.  The pattern has clear instructions and diagrams to help ensure success.  The reason this pattern has taken so long is I have been working with a graphic artist and now it is professionally formatted so I can start getting it out to stores soon.

Just like I have done with all of my patterns, I have created a Spin! Pinterest board sharing quilts made using this pattern.  It is a great place to see how others are using my patterns!

As you can see, I have gone a little crazy and started making one in every color!

If you would like to buy this pattern, it is available as a pdf download through my Etsy shop or through my Payhip Pattern Store.  To celebrate, I thought I would put all of my patterns on sale through Sunday May 1st - including this Spin! pattern.  So this weekend is a great time to grab those patterns because sometime Monday, they will be increased to their regular price.

And what is a pattern release without a giveaway!  You can win your own pdf copy of the pattern (I will credit you back if you have already purchased it) and to get you started, I will send you a half yard of two Kona solids.

You can choose Kona Ash and Kona Navy...

...or you can pick Kona Lipstick to go with the Kona Ash.

I would have a hard time choosing between these colors.

There are two ways to enter.  1) The first is to just leave me a comment letting me know which Kona combination you would like to win. 2) For an additional entry, help me share this new pattern.  Pin it, tweet it, share it on your Facebook - however you want to help me spread the word is fine by me.  Then just leave a comment letting me know how you shared it.  I really do appreciate it!

International readers are welcome to enter BUT, due to high shipping costs, I may not be able to ship the fabrics.  I will just need to play it by ear.  But if you should win, I will still send you a .pdf of any or even all of my patterns.

Please make sure you’re not a no-reply commenter (or leave an email address in your comment if you’re not sure). You cannot win if I cannot get a hold of you!

The giveaway will end on Sunday May 1st at 9 pm PST.
Good Luck!

*****This giveaway is closed. The winner is #2 Jayne of Twiggy and Opal. ******
