Oh Scrap! : Scrap-A-Palooza Flimsy

Due to a nice quiet Thanksgiving, I found myself with a lot of free time - time I spent in my sewing room!  One of the projects I worked on was to complete the last four blocks for my Scrap-A-Palooza sampler quilt.

These last four blocks are for the corners of my sampler so I thought some pinwheel shaped blocks would fill the spaces nicely. I decided to use the same color as I used in the center block of the sampler.  I thought it would balance the colors nicely.

And here is the finished quilt top!  All of the pieces were pulled from my scrap bins.  Even the background fabrics are various low volume scraps.  I love all of the color play and the fact that every block is different.

So that is how I used my scraps, what about you!

(Black) Friday Finish!

It certainly wasn't careful planning that I would be sharing this scrap vortex quilt on Black Friday but it seems appropriate doesn't it?!

This is my second Scrap Vortex.  My first one was made with lots of smaller scraps and bright colors.  My intent with this recent one was to sew up my black and white scraps.  The color red seemed like a good color to add to them.

I also used a number of strings that were in my scrap bin.  It definitely gives this quilt an altogether different look than my last one

I did stall out on this project for a bit.  I was finding my quilt center was getting a bit chaotic for me so I stopped at a rather small size.  I knew I was going to have to calm it down a bit with a solid black border.  Because I still had a number of scraps, I decided to add some pieced squares into two corners.

Even though I am not a fan of this color combination, I really like the look of this quilt.

And the back is almost as fun as the front.  I thought I would never use these two black, red and white pieces that have been in my stash forever.  I guess they were just waiting for me to sew up the perfect quilt.

A Lovely Year of Finishes

I am pleased to say this finish means I met my A Lovely Year of Finishes November goal with Sew Bittersweet Designs.  I love these linky parties that help to keep me focused on the finishes!

Yo Yo Quilt

I have been needing to do a bit of repair on a quilt I finished years ago and I was finally motivated to get it done thanks to Val.  Every Tuesday over at Val's Quilting Studio, you can share posts based on a pre-determined theme - this week is Yo Yo Quilts so the timing to get these repairs done was perfect.

I made this quilt a little over 10 years ago. When my grandmother passed, I found a few bags of fabric scraps in her belongings and decided to use some of them in a yo yo quilt.  I decided to use different colors to create a pattern. And I really love the points around the outside border.

The quilt hangs over the foot board of my lodge pole pine bed as it is a bit delicate. About every two years, I need to fix a few of the yo yos or restitch a few of the connecting stitches.  I have always loved seeing vintage yo yo quilts and really wanted one of my own. I do love seeing it every day but if asked to make another one, I am sure I can come up with a number of excuses as to why that is not happening!

I hope all of you in the US have a wonderful Thanksgiving filled with friends, family and good food.

Craftsy

And if you are a Black Friday shopper and love good deals, I should let you know about some great ones on Craftsy.  They have all of their classes on sale.  And right now I am not sure you can beat their pricing on Kona Solids and Aurifil threads.  This is a great time to load up on those necessary basics!

I myself am picking up a few more quilt kits and quilt backs at ridiculously low prices!

Oh Scrap! : RSC Green

For the Rainbow Scrap Challenge, the color for the month of November is lime green.  I finished my RSC15 quilts so I have already picked a block for 2016 and started sewing together some of the blocks.

I am still on the fence as to whether I am going to also make an alternate star block so for now, I am only making two blocks each month until I get a feel for how this is going to look.

For far I only have blocks for lime and brown.  I also could just add some sashing.  I don't feel the need to make a decision yet.  I always feel quilts will tell you what they want to become.

What about you - Have you been sewing with scraps this week?

Pretty Gemstones - McCall's Quilting

Today is the day I finally get to share a quilt I have been keeping a secret for a really long time!  It is called Pretty Gemstones and you can find it in the soon to be released January/February 2016 issue of McCall's Quilting.

Quite a few of my favorite scraps went into this quilt.  I love how they look with the Robert Kaufman Essex Yarn Dyed fabric for the background.

This quilt reminds me of a jeweler's display of colored gemstone rings.  So many yummy colors, it is hard to pick a favorite!

If you subscribe to the magazine, you might already have received your copy in your mailbox.  The issue will be available in stores by November 24th - just in time to pick it up while you are out holiday shopping.  It is fun to sew and I hope you give it a try.  I would love to see what you come up with!

Scrap-A-Palooza! Purple Sampler Blocks

I have finally been able to spend a bit of time in my sewing room so lots of progress has been made.  One of the projects I am working on is my Scrap-A-Palooza sampler.  This has really been a great project for both using up scraps and playing with color.

I finished up my four purple blocks.  I really wanted to choose some block designs without a lot of background to them.  Once again, I used the darker fabrics in the center of the blocks and worked out to lighter tones to the outside.

And here they are in the quilt layout.  Only four more corner blocks to go and the quilt top will be finished.  My plans are for these last blocks to be made in greens like the center block.

I am hoping to have this one finished by the end of the month!
