Boards

Boards...A funny title for a blog post but it was definitely the theme in my sewing room this week.

An afternoon was spent making a few more design boards.  I use them all the time when I am sewing up various blocks or quilt sections right at my machine.  I like to work on multiple projects at once so this allows me to pull a section of fabrics off my design walls and stack them up next to my machine as I sew.  I can also take them to my ironing board as I sew up the blocks - keeping them all together and therefore less confusing.

Here is a link to the tutorial I loosely follow.

And speaking of ironing boards - mine now has a new cover!  Looking back at previous posts, it looks like my board needs a new cover annually.  Not being too particular about the fabric, I just pulled an older fabric from my stash that didn't have a home.  Because I never close my ironing board, I simply grab some string and a large needle and lace the fabric across the bottom making it taunt.  It works great!

These are my only finishes for this week.  I am busily working on three quilt projects so I hope to get a top done soon.  Maybe there will be a quilt finish for next week!

I made up a batch of these for Chirstmass gifts for our quilting group. What I did was put ironing board cloth on one side and flannel on the other. Its amazing how well and long they have held up.

I need to do that to my ironing board - looks to be my weekend project.

I love this short, helpful post! so refreshing right now! I feel so overwhelmed by the volume of fabric stuff on the web right now. (It is probably corresponding to the volume of fabric on my table and not the web, lol)

A great idea making those boards, I'll set aside some time over the next week to make a couple of these mini boards.

Your design boards look so useful, and I had forgotten about them! Thanks for linking the tutorial up again! My ironing board definitely needs a new cover (I'm cringing as I write that!) and I'm wondering what kind of yardage it takes you to cover yours.

Great idea on the boards. And yowzers! That psychedelic ironing board fabric will keep you from falling asleep while you're ironing, lol.

I like your ironing board cover fabric! It's kinda groovy, man. Psychedelic, even. And using a darker fabric makes sense, since they tend to get sort of stained, don't they? I have a lovely bright bird print on mine, but unfortunately it has a cream background and is getting dingy :(

Another option for covering the ironing board is to use elastic with grippers on both ends(available at JoAnn's) to secure a length of fabric over the ironing board. I did a quick machine hemming on the fabric so it can be removed and thrown in the wash. I just put the fabric over my old ironing board cover so the padding is still there.

I've made a bigger board with flannel on one side, but I love the idea of smaller ones that can be transfered to the ironing board easily! It's amazing how quickly an ironing board cover can become trashed! I just washed mine hoping it would become 'new' again. I don't recommend it, as it became distorted and lumpy!

Love the idea of just lacing the fabric across the bottom of the board. Why did I think of that? lol. I never put mine away either. Love the fabric you used. Looks like October 31st. :^)
Thanks for the idea of the design boards. Checking out that link. ;^)

Sounds like you are gearing up for a lot progress on other stuff. New boards and a new ironing board cover. Does spiffing things up in your sewing room improve your motivation?

Can you give me the link to putting the strip around the board. These will help me with a presentation I am planning to give later this year. Thank you. I enjoy your blog.

Thanks for sharing the link to the tutorial for the mini boards. I had forgotten where I saw them originally.I could really use some to keep all my projects together. My cats and dogs trashed my attempt at a design wall, so need to come up with something new. Thanks for linking up with this week's TGIFF>
