Oh Scrap! - Slow Progress

Usually once the weather turns cold, I am ready to spend lots of time in my sewing room.  This year has just been too long and all I want to do is snuggle under a quilt and stare at the TV.

But I did manage to cut and sew two more pixel blocks.  These take sooo long to dig through my scraps and cut these tiny squares.  I know there are ways to make this faster but I am trying to use up my smallest bits.

I wish I could share with you the project.

It is slowly taking shape but it is a gift so I don't want to give it away.

I also started a new scrap project.  I don't know if this will be an RSC quilt or if I will just pick a few coordinating colors and leave it at that.  I am making these from 2" strips so the blocks measure 12".

Once I get the three blocks planned in red completed, I can say my red color bin is at a very manageable level!  Now I can focus on the next color...

What scrappy projects are you working on?

Strawberry Lemonade

Or, it can be called Kissing Pinwheels.  I think of both when I think of this quilt.

I had a bunch of trimmed or "bonus" triangles in blacks and whites so I decided to turn them into tiny pinwheels.  I knew they would be perfect for one of my Scrap Mixology designs.  Then I pulled one of my favorite color combinations of scraps.

There are so many ways to lay out these blocks - but I loved this one where the pinwheels "kiss".

Now this quilt just needs a sweet little girl to gift it too!

Even though I have been quilting for decades, I am still amazed at how small changes in fabric, layout or colors can make the same block look so different.  You can see other ways to lay out these blocks in my Two Bits pattern - the second module of my Scrap Mixology pattern series.

I hope those who celebrated, had a nice Thanksgiving.  I am thankful so many of you join me on this creative journey - I really do appreciate all of you!

Time to finally hit buy on my cart :)

Oh Scrap! : Let the Scraps Lead

I still have been busy sewing up blocks for a number of scrap quilts that are in the works.

The main project I have been working on is my blue Well Suited blocks.

As I make the flying geese components for the center, I have been using those bonus triangles to make a bunch of cute pinwheel blocks.  They look so cute all stacked up!

I only have about 6 more blocks to finish and then I can play a bit more with the layout and sew up the blocks.  But I kept thinking about those cute little pinwheels....

Then I thought about some of my RSC blocks.  They are just the right size to work with the pinwheel blocks.  I tried laying them out interspersed among the HRTs.  Or I could use the pinwheels around the outside border.  I will definitely be playing with these more in the future.

It is fun to see just where the scraps lead you!

Dinosaur Scraps into a Finish

What do I do with some bits of dinosaur prints?

I decided to cut them up into squares, pull a few coordinating prints from my stash and grab a couple yards of a background fabric.  Then I went to my go-to Wiggle Time pattern to make a small quilt.

For one of the dino prints I only had a few squares, so I just sprinkled them throughout the quilt.

I barely had just enough of the background solid - in fact, I made the top and bottom border a bit smaller than the pattern calls out so that I would have enough fabric.

I found a funky brown print for the backing and finished it off with the perfect striped fabric for the binding.    I was pleased to be able to use up these novelty scraps - I am sure someone will love all the fun prints in this quilt.

This is the second stack of novelty scraps I have turned into something useful.  It feels good to clean these hard-to-use scraps out of my scrap bins.  It will be nice to start out 2021 with my scrap bins purged of "unloved" fabrics.

Enjoy your weekend.  Stay well!

My Happy Mail

I finally had a chance to open up some happy mail I recently received.

I bought four cuts at 4 yards each from Connecting Threads for some future quilt backings.  The bottom print is a reorder - I love that soft red and was so happy to get more of it.

The fabulous green print is called is Chaise - and it is still available in four colors.  I hope to get more of these prints soon.

And the top two orange and blue prints are called Dapper.  I wasn't quite sure about these prints when I bought them but once I see them in person, I am ready to buy more.  There are still four colors available in this print too.

I already have plans for the red and the blue prints so you will most likely see these in an upcoming quilt.  I always find myself with lots of sewing time in the winter.  So that means lots of quilt finishes!

Oh Scrap! : So Many Projects

The last few days have been filled with lots of scraps!

I cut and sewed two more of my postage stamp "pixel" blocks.  I now have four done so that leaves 11 more to do.  This is definitely a project where I am now asking myself...
"What was I thinking!"

I added some low volume pieces to the red and blue scraps I cut last week.  I have been mindlessly sewing them into blocks.  They go together quickly so I already have enough to make a quilt top.

I have also been sewing away on my blue version of my Well-Suited quilt.  I miscounted during my cutting so I have to scrounge up more fabric before I can continue.  I also need a free design wall so I can start cleaning up the blocks by removing the dog ears and deciding on a final layout.

I have been using the flip corner technique for my geese blocks so I have lots of bonus triangles.  I have been turning these into these cute pinwheel blocks.  I will add these to the RSC Well Suited rainbow pinwheels so next year I should have enough for a quilt.

The scraps are flying right now at my house...What is up at yours?

Scrappy Butterfly Finish

You know those scraps that never seem to find a home?  I have been attempting to identify them and try and use them to make some quilts while I am waiting for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge to start up again in January 2021.

One of the first scraps I tackled was some novelty bits I had.  The butterfly fabrics I ended up framing with some blue scraps.

And I found a home for them in a fun little quilt.  I knew I wanted to pair these blocks with the blue border fabric I had in my scraps (it was some backing trimmings from a previous quilt).  Some of the lighter blocks were a shade off or were lost up against the fabric so I added a tiny black stop border.

The light blue "background fabric" was only so wide so I had to create that strip in the center - I used that as an opportunity to use up some of the smaller butterfly scraps.

I really like how it turned out - especially because it all came out of the scrap bin!

Even the backing was leftover pieces from a previous quilt's backing.  I had to piece it quite a bit but the black and blue colors went so well with the top, I knew I just had to figure out how to make it work.

The quilt measures about 38 x 44 - a nice little size to have on hand for a gift.

One thing I discovered in making this quilt is I have a TON of blue scraps.  I decided it was time to make a big effort in turning them into a quilt or three.  So I hope you like blue because that is the theme to most of the projects I am working on now!

Happy Friday!
