Oh Scrap! : Final Red Letters

Whew!  I finished all of my red letters needed for my banner just under the wire.

My goal was to complete them by the end of January.

The C and the G took a bit to finish. I was quite amazed at all the shades of red solids I had hidden away in the scrap bin.

Here are the letters I have so far.  A little birdie told me the color for February in the comments on my last post so now I know I just have the letter I to make next month.  I will start pulling scraps today!

(As a fan or Wordle and Wordscapes, the above letters would be a big head scratcher!)

Two More Placemats

I almost had a quilt finish to share today but I am still sewing n the binding.

So I guess I will just have to share two other small finishes I had this week.

I quilted and bound the last two gray placemats I made.  I always enjoy seeing how different they look just by how you group the fabrics together.

Here are the backing fabrics I found in my stash.

That means I have now finished 13 gray mats - which means there are a total of 31 placemats finished to date.

I hope the new RSC color gets announced soon - I am ready to get started on the next color!

Happy Friday!!

Oh Scrap! : More Red Blocks

This week was a pretty productive one.  I worked on about 4 different projects and made some great progress.  I finished all the blocks for my UFO quilt and am busy sewing up the rows.  I made two more placemat tops that I can quilt up soon.

On the scrap front, I made four Bloom blocks in red.  This is a new project I am starting this year.

The four blocks will go together in the quilt like this.  I have had one of the medallion layouts shared in the pattern stuck in my head so I know I just have to make it so I can move on.

This quilt will not be made from 100% scraps - I am using all the same white fabric for the background and the bases will all be the same.

I also finished another geo letter for my banner.  I have two more in red that I need to complete.  Hopefully I can finish them this week.  I messed up a bit on the background for this letter, but I can fix it when I go to put all the letters together.  You all know how I hate to get out my seam ripper!

Hoe you all enjoy your week!

First Quilt Finish of 2022

I shared some finished placemats earlier this month, but this is the first quilt finish of 2022.

I had a number of navy-blue leftover binding strips and large blue chunks in my scrap bins.  So I wanted to make a project that used them up.  I am also wanting to clean out the tiny crumbs from my scrap bins - so this quilt really helped meet those two goals.

There are a number of different layouts that can be made using this block.  But I went with this one because I didn't need to match up a bunch of points.  I am really pleased with how it turned out.

The block is quite simple...it is just a 2.5 x 8.5" rectangle with four 1.5" flip corners sewn on.

I was able to use up some older stash on the back.  I didn't have quite enough of the striped fabric, so I pieced in another blue.  It really shows off the swirly quilting.

This one will most likely go into the donation pile.  It isn't very big - it measures 48"x 56".
I am pleased to report it used up almost all the navy scraps I had. Yay!

This wek I hope to focus on the UFO project I want to finish by the end of the month.  Almost all the blocks are done - I just need to sew them up and quilt...and I have about 10 days to get it all done!

Have a great weekend!

Oh Scrap! : Scrappy Letters

For a long time now, I have been wanting to make a small banner with my business name on it for various events.  I don't want it to be too big and of course I want it scrappy.

When I was digging through my gray scraps for my placemats, I kept out some various shades of solids and decided to tackle some paper piecing.  I am using Quiet Plays Geo Letters pattern.  Once they are framed, I think they will measure about 6" square.

For gray, I just need these two letters.

Next up are three letters in shades of red.

I haven't done any paper piecing in a really long time.
It took a bit to get back in the swing of it!

Happy Scrappy Sunday!

January's Placemats

One of my RSC projects this year is to sew my crumb scraps in the monthly color into placemats.

I have already finished them for the month of January.  I knew there were not going to be that many made because I didn't have that many crumbs in red.

Sorry - I forgot to take a phot of the backings.

But I did take a photo of the growing stack.  To date there are 29 finished.

I am already looking forward to seeing what the next month's color is.  I am really enjoying making these - they are really cleaning out my scrap bins!

Oh Scrap! : Nothing Much to Share

Most of this week's sewing was spent on finishing the blue scrappy quilt I shared Friday.  Other than that, there really hasn't been much progress made on anything else.

I did decide what to do with the stack of older fabrics I found.

I am going to make these blocks - alternating two different fabrics.  The strips are all varying sizes to the lengths of the blocks will all be different.  We shall see how they all work together.

I have cut all the pieces for a number of blocks, and I just need to find some time to sit and sew.

Happy Sunday Everyone!

Thought I would Never Finish

My initial plan was to be sharing a quilt finish today.  But I am going to have to settle with just having the finished quilt top to share.

I really loved this project when I started it.  But as I started making the blocks, I realized they took quite a bit of time to cut and sew all those tiny flip corners.

I thought I would never finish all the blocks!

But I did finally finish them this week.  And I have to admit, I am really pleased with how it turned out.

This project really cleaned out all the big chunks clogging up my blue scrap bin and the flip corners ate through a lot of crumbs.

Hopefully this weekend I can get the backing sewn and maybe I can get it quilted next week.

Now I can move on to something else!

This Year's Focus

For the past decade or so, I have taken the last few weeks of each year to ready my business for the new year, clean/organize my house and give thought to what I really want to accomplish over the next 12 months.  I also update all my work spreadsheets - including my list of all of my UFOs.

I ended up with 19 in case you were wondering!

A quilty friend and I always have a competition to see who ends the year with the least UFOs.  We tied for the second year in a row.  But what we both discovered is that we both do great at finishing the new starts but continue to carryover the older UFOs.

So we came up with a plan...

We made a list of 12 old projects and every month we will take turns choosing a number and we will at least try and make progress on that UFO.

So this month, I will be working with this pile of fabric I adopted from another friend.  A lot of the fabric is already cut into strips and the larger pieces look like about 1/8 yard cuts.  Not sure what the original plan was but I will figure something to make from it all.  There is even a backing fabric and a fun stripe I think I will use for the binding.

I am happy that the first UFO drawn looks like it will be something I can finish up.  It will start the year off with a success.  We shall see how long I can keep it up!

Oh Scrap! : Happy 2022

I don't know about everyone else, but I am so happy to put 2021 in the rearview mirror.

Let's all have hope that this new year is a better one.

A new year also means the Rainbow Scrap Challenge starts back up again.  I read through the lines on Angela's Instagram account and figured out early that red was going to be the color for January.  So I got an early start and already have some blocks to share.

Here are my Two Bits blocks in red.  I had made some in 2021 so I didn't need too many.

I think I need just nine more blocks - I probably need just about every rainbow color still so I will just poke along with this project for now.

And here are my red Chaser blocks.  The pattern doesn't have the green flip triangles in it - it was just something I have been thinking about and wanted to try.

The little pinwheels they create kind of get lost in all that is going on but I still think they are a fun little surprise.  I am looking forward to seeing this quilt evolve.

Do you have your RSC blocks picked out for the new year?
