Oh Scrap! : Outdoors Calls

I am pretty embarrassed at how little sewing I did this last week.

This is all I have to show for it.  A few almost completed segments of my paper-pieced letter B and some HSTs for one of my RSC projects.

But the weather has been nice so I spent the week in my gardens.  The veggie garden is now all planted and I have already been harvesting/eating some of my previously planted foods.

I even canned my first batch of pickled radishes...Yum!

I sure hope some of you have more to share!

CIL Quilt Finish #1

Quilts go together so quickly when others make the blocks!

I already have the first Covered in Love quilt ready to share.

For this first one, I alternated the direction of the blocks.  This is different than the way the blocks were designed.  I always like to mix it up and see if I can see any alternate patterns emerge.

So many pretty fall-colored scraps in these.

The backs were even already pieced together for these tall nine quilts.

All I had to do was load it on my longarm and quilt it up.

I continued the autumn feel and quilted some vertical leaves in a light brown thread.

I already have the second one all quilted and just need to finish the binding.  Next you will get to see how the blocks were intended to be configured.

So stay tuned!

Quilt Labels

Did you know that every quilt that is donated by Covered in Love gets a label?

As I work on assembling quilts from the blocks donated to Covered In Love, I also attach a label to the backing fabric.  I thought I would share the process that I use that works great for printed labels.

I am assuming that Kat orders her labels from a digital fabric place like Spoonflower.

You can also find some Etsy stores that will customize some labels like these that I ordered years ago.

You can easily needle turn the labels to the back but I have a quicker process.

I use mod podge for fabric.

(Sorry about the sideways photo - my computer wasn't cooperating!)

With a foam brush (or if you are just prepping one label you can just use your finger), I thinly cover the back of the label with mod podge.  You want to go past the area you will be cutting.  Let it dry.

I then sew them to the backing before I quilt it.  The mod podge makes them a bit sticky so you can just place them on the back without pins.  You can sew them down pretty close to the edge.
You just want to be sure to place the label far enough toward the center of the quilt so it makes it onto the back of the quilt. (Remember your backing is usually bigger than your top and you trim it.  You don't want your label where you will be trimming.)

Even though these labels are now attached with a raw edge, there is minimal fraying thanks to the mod podge.  Even with laundering!

Oh Scrap! : More Green Blocks

 Hurray for me!

I have been dragging my feet getting the paper pieced letter S done that I needed last month in the color pink.  Well look what I finally finished this week!

I also finished the letter I in the color green for May.  I still need a letter B that I think I will make in lime greens.  Maybe I can still finish that one by the end of the month.

I also finished my Chaser blocks (with the added flip corners) for the month.

I added them to my design wall with all the other completed blocks.

This is going to be one colorful quilt!

How about you...what scrap quilting have you done last week!

Placemats for May

In April, I finished my pink placemats really early in the month.  So I decided to get out my black and multi-colored scraps and work on those.

Boy, do I have a lot to share this month!

Here are six I made from black scraps.  I always try and sort them into alike colors.

Here are four more.  I ran out of solid black fabric for the bindings so I have been using some coordinating grays and browns.

I also took a deeper dive into my orphan blocks and pulled out bits to make these 6 placemats.

I even disassembled a pillow cover I had made years ago as a class sample on English Paper Piecing.
I no longer teach the class so making a placemat from the piece turns it into something useful.

Now I am working on the green scraps for May.
So far I only have two that have the bindings completed.

I added these 19 to my existing stack of completed placemats.
That brings the grand total to 99!

(These placemats are all trimmed to 11 x 15 and will be donated to Meals on Wheels.  My goal is to have them handed out with one of the holiday meals.)

I keep waiting for these to make a big dent in my scraps but so far I am not seeing it!

Covered In Love 2022

A few posts back, I mentioned I would soon be receiving a big box containing a bunch of blocks from Kat to use to finish a bunch of Covered in Love quilts.

The box arrived...do you want to see what blocks I received?

I received enough of the Tall Nine blocks to make 4 quilts.  Kat did such a fantastic job organizing everything on these, I was able to get sewing right away.

I almost have a quilt top completed already!

I also received enough of the Oh My Stars to make three quilts.  I know these are a favorite.

I might try to see if I can get creative and stretch these into 4 quilts.  It will depend on what I can come up with from my stash and what fabric is here to use.

You know I love a challenge!

If you want to find out more about CIL you can follow this link.

And a big thanks to those that donated blocks and fabrics to help make these quilts happen!

Stay Tuned - I should be sharing some finished quilts in a couple weeks.

Oh Scrap! : The Color Green

The Rainbow Scrap Challenge color for May is green and I got a bit of a late start on pulling my scraps this month.  So I don't have a lot to share today.

I did sort and sew the center portions of all four of my Chaser blocks for the month.

And I did sort out all my green solid bits for my green letters this month.  I have even printed out my patterns.  But I still need to finish that pesky S in pink for April.  I hope to get all caught up this month!

I also sorted, paired and sewed together all the green triangles I could find in my scrap bin.  This is the first step I take in my placemat project.  I like to clean all these odd shaped scraps out of my bin.

Speaking of placemats, I have started on my first green one.  I know a few of you are making some placemats of your own.  I thought I would share one of the "tools" I am using.  I have this tray that is the exact size I want my placemats.  So all I need to do is sew together bits until they fill the bottom of the tray and I know they are large enough.  Before I used this, I was constantly measuring my piece to see if it was big enough.  This has definitely sped up the process.

So I guess I am poised to make some great progress this week!

Hands2Help Finish

It is Friday again and I have another finish to share with all of you.

Late last year, I needed to come up with some scrap quilt ideas to use up some of my low volume scraps.  I decided to pull my Two Bits pattern and start a new RSC quilt.  I would make the Churn dash variation in the RSC color and frame it in some low volume strips.

I went with the straight layout with the blocks "kissing".

It used up a lot of my scraps and for the most part, I am pretty pleased with how it turned out.
(I still don't like the gray pieces that snuck in but I guess I decided I could live with it as I didn't replace the blocks. Ha!)

I put a bright happy yellow backing on it and quilted it with some swirls.  I also joined a bunch of striped and rainbow colored leftover binding pieces to frame this one up.
I had just enough and it looks great!

This quilt is going to be donated as part of the Hands2Help event going on right now.

I am going to donate it to Covered In Love.  In about a week I am getting a big box of blocks from them and will be finishing them up into a bunch of quilts.  So I will just include this one (and maybe one or two other quilts hanging around) into the box that gets shipped back.

It is hard to believe that all of these quilts were all made from the same pattern.
...and all came out of the scrap bin!

You can head over to The Academic Quilter to read even more about the event.

A big thank you and loud applause to Mari for taking over this event this year!

Oh Scrap! : May UFO

Happy Mother's Day to all the Moms out there!

This is one f my favorite rhododendrons in my yard.  It is the slightest shade of pink.

Indoors, I have been focusing on making a bunch of scrappy placemats.  The rest of my available time has been spent working on my May UFO project.

It is wonderfully scrappy too!

Because I am the only quilter in my family, almost all of the family quilty items have ended up at my house.  One of the items is this hand pieced hexagon quilt top.  I think the fabrics are all 1940's prints.  I decided almost 15 years ago that I was going to hand quilt it.  I finished about half of it and it has languished unfinished for about 12 years.  With no progress at all.

It's number came up in the UFO challenge that me and a friend are competing in.  So I have been working on it every evening - hoping to maybe finish it this month.

I decided to not get out my big floor frame but just to finish it using one of my big hoops.  To say I am rusty is an understatement!  Oh well, half of the quilt will have neat small stitches and the other half will be large.  It is just for me to enjoy.

I am thoroughly enjoying looking at each of the wonderful prints!
