Just in the Nick of Time

 Whew!

Look what I just finished with a day to spare!

Yes, I just put the last few stitches on the binding one day before I need this banner for my booth at the Westside Quilter's Quilt show.

The paper-pieced letters are by Quiet Play.

The letters were all made using solid-colored scraps.  I am pretty pleased with how it turned out but it certainly isn't perfect.

On the back, I used a soda can print a friend gave me.  (She actually gave it to me for the backs of a few placemats but it worked so perfectly here I couldn't resist.)  For the binding, I found the perfect striped fabric in my stash.

It certainly is colorful!

Every time I make a paper-pieced project, I swear it the last one I will ever do.
This banner was no exception!

I am so pleased I got it done in time!

Oh Scrap! : Switchplates

This week there was a lot of activity in my sewing room.  I have been busy sewing blocks into quilt tops, sewing up scraps into placemats and cutting fabrics for a few of my scrappy projects.

This included a bunch of pieces for my switchplate quilt.

I cut up a bunch of 3.5" x 1.5" strips to make these blocks that are green with yellow centers.  I have a few more various colors all sitting next to my sewing machine so I can chain piece them when I have the time.

I think these are all the blocks I have finished to date.  I am not even sure I have enough for a small quilt at this point!  I am pretty sure I will be working on this one into 2023.  One of these days I will need to sit down and do a bit of math to see exactly how many blocks I need.

I think this quilt will be loads of fun once I finish it!

A Scrap Mixology Finish

I am finally feeling like I am making some progress on some of the projects cluttering up my sewing room.  It is such a good feeling!

Today I am sharing another Scrap Mixology quilt using the Bloom pattern.  This block is a variation of a basket block that is uniquely laid out to create this wonderful design.

This layout is featured in the pattern.  When I released the pattern, I thought I could go without making a sample of this design, but I just kept thinking how cool it would look in these colors.  So, I finally just had to scratch that itch and put one together.  I am so glad I did!

I played around with the quilting a bit.  Most of it is covered in swirls.  But I did put a big floppy feather that runs through the diamond in the middle of the quilt.

I found the perfect backing for it in my stash.  Not only were the colors perfect, but I had exactly enough to make it work.  I love it when that happens!

One more project is done and dusted.  So now I can move onto the next set of blocks awaiting assembly.  This one isn't as scrappy as I usually make my quilts.  The white background is all the same fabric.  And so are all the basket bases.  I love how it creates unity to this quilt.

As a reminder, here is the first layout I did with the blocks on point.  I used my Kaffe Fassett scraps to make this one.

I also made this fun layout.  I love the look of these big blocks.

Then there is the barn-raising layout.  This one is entirely made from the scrap bins.

All of these layouts (and even a few more) are included in the pattern.  It always surprises me how a quilt can look so different just by selecting scraps and rotating blocks.

If you are interested in making your own Bloom quilt, you can purchase the pdf pattern on Etsy or from my Payhip store.  I appreciate the support and hope you share a photo of your finished quilt with me.

If you are a guild or quilting group in the PNW, this pattern will be one I am teaching.  Contact me if you would like me to come show you how to get your scraps into pretty quilts like these.  I still have some spots in my 2023 calendar.

(FYI - I am really close to finishing all the quilts I need for my fifth Scrap Mixology so watch for the release of that pattern soon! Yippee!)

Oh Scrap! : Lost Blocks?

Another Sunday and I don't have too much to share.

I wanted to sew up a quilt top this weekend, so I put all of my Scrap Mixology Chaser blocks up on the design wall.  I thought I only had two more blocks to sew up.  I was really disappointed to see that I need 10 more.

At first I thought I had a small stack of blocks somewhere but I did dig around in my sewing room and did not see them.  So this top will just have to wait.

I did sew up some other blocks into a top and it is already loaded on my longarm so I hope to share it on Friday all finished up. That is the nice thing about working on so many projects at once...there is always something to work on!

September Placemats

I know it is only mid-month, but I have completed a bunch of placemats and I wanted to share them with you.

I made a couple from some orphan blocks.  I have to say, these go together far faster than those that I make from tiny scraps!

Here are two purple and two orange scrappy placemats.  Some of these were quilted quite a while ago.  I have a big stack of these waiting for me to sew the binding.  I try to hand sew at least one a night.

In a previous post, I shared I found a bag of bits all partially sewn together.  Well, here are some of the placemats I made with them.  I really like how they turned out.

I ended up having enough bits to make nine placemats.  I was also able to use lots of different colors for the bindings.

I added these 15 to my stack and I now have a total of 151 finished.  The stack is just under 24" tall.

I need to contact Meals on Wheels in early October to get a firm delivery date on when they want them.  I am still hoping for 200 total.  So I still might have time to achieve that goal!

Hope everyone has a nice weekend!

Oh Scrap! : More Block Progress

Wildfire smoke has been so bad in my area that it is difficult to be outside much.

So that means I have been inside sewing a bit.

Hurray, I finished the last two letters I need for my quilt show booth banner.  Which is good because I am the featured quilter at the Westside Quilters Guild show in Hillsboro Oregon the first weekend in October.  If you are in the area, I hope you stop in.  I will be giving free talks on scrap management each morning.  You can read more about it on their website.

I also finished the last eight Bloom blocks I need for my Scrap Mixology quilt.

I put them up on the design wall to finish out the layout I am making.  (Yes, this layout is in my Bloom Scrap Mixology pattern.)  This is another project I can start sewing together.

I should have lots of finishes to share soon.

I did battle the smoke and the heat to finally hang a barn quilt made by a friend on my newly painted shed. (Please ignore the dirty windows and the piled-up wood.  It is on my list to deal with.)

Definitely says "a quilter lives here!"

UFO Finish

Last December, a friend and I decided to have a UFO challenge in 2022.  We chose 12 UFOs and decided that every month we would draw a number and try and finish that project.

I was doing great until June hit and my life got busy.

The June project was to make a quilt to use up more of this neutral fabric stack.  Normally I don't put an unstarted quilt on my UFO list.  But these fabrics don't fit in my stash very well so I felt making a quilt from these leftovers would be the best option.

Use up as much as I can!

I decided to make these churn dash variation blocks.  I am sure they have a name but I don't know what they are called.  I just know they were fast and easy to make.

The blocks have been finished for a few weeks but I didn't know how I wanted to finish it off.  Once I got all the sashing on, I couldn't decide if I wanted a border.  It would have to be a scrappy border because I was out of big pieces of yardage.

I finally decided to just quilt it up as is and call it finished!  I have had a backing for this quilt for years.  I have no idea where it came from - I don't remember buying it either.

I just know it is cute and worked great on the back.

The first quilt I made with these fabrics was this one.  I think I made it in 2013.

I also made this strata quilt from the leftovers in 2017.

I don't know why I bought so much fabric in these colors.  I must have really liked them at one time. I still had quite a bit of fabric leftover but I decided to finally just stick it in the stash.

So June's UFO is finally finished, and I am now moving onto July's.  It is my kitchen valiances.  I did go out and buy all the hardware so this one should get finished soon too.

Yay for me!

Oh Scrap! : Scraps Galore

I almost forgot to get this week's Oh Scrap! post written.  The exterior of my house was painted this week so there was a lot of activity going on.

This weekend was spent putting back all the things I moved away from the house and making sure everything was finally watered well.

I am still working on the last eight Bloom blocks for one of my projects.  I have been busy sewing and trimming all of the required half square triangles.

I am so close to having these all completed.

Here is the current condition of my cutting space!  In fact, almost all of the flat surfaces in my sewing room look like this. All of those scrap piles are for different projects I am working on..

Slowly they are getting done!
