Oh Scrap! : Too Many Blues

Not too recently, I had my blue scrap bin out.  After sorting out some pieces I wanted, I realized the bin was still so stuffed and overflowing, I could not slide it back into its home.

It has sat in the middle of my sewing room floor waiting for me to do something about it.

After much thinking, I finally came up with an idea. Most of my darker blue scraps are wider strings.  I also have a lot of dark blue leftover bindings already cut at 2.5" wide.  So, I decided to cut them to 8.5" lengths and use some 1.5" red, orange and gold squares to create some flip corners on the ends.  These small squares will also help me use up a lot of the tiny scraps in my warm color bins.

Two problems addressed.

Right now, my plan is to put them together like this. I need to spend some time pulling and cutting the necessary scraps but I think this is a good start.

I really didn't want to start a new project until next year but you can't control when inspiration strikes!

Another Bloom Finish

I hope all of you who celebrated, had a wonderful Thanksgiving.  I enjoyed a day off with few work responsibilities.  I am not a fan of the traditional turkey dinner so I like to stay home and eat foods I only allow myself a couple times a year.  It was so nice to just relax!

Today I wanted to share yet another quilt I made using the Scrap Mixology Bloom pattern.  This layout can be centered on the quilt or done asymmetrically like the quilt I made.

For this quilt, I used one of the block modifications included in the pattern.

I decided to free motion quilt some daisies in a white thread so that it shows up a lot on the royal blue backing.

This quilt measures 48" square.  I really love the reds and royal blue colors.  They contrast so nicely with the black and white scraps I used.

Hard to believe that this quilt is made from the same block....

...and so is this one!

All of the layouts are shared in the Bloom pattern.  It is nice to have patterns that you can use multiple times and create different looking quilts.

Enjoy your weekend!

Oh Scrap! : Not Much Progress

Unfortunately, I don't have a lot to share this week.  I just haven't had much time to sew this week.

I did get a chance to finish sewing the last of the blocks needed for this top.  I even sewed the blocks up into rows.  I was really hoping to finish the quilt top but I guess that will have to wait for next week.

So I hope you guys have lots to share!

Not Always Scrappy

Well, take a look!  I actually made a quilt from my stash fabric.

It is overcast and rainy today so photos are really difficult to take.  But here is a photo of the fabric pull so you can see the lovely colors.  I didn't have enough of any one mint colored fabric, so I used three different prints to meet the pattern requirements.

My kitchen is barely big enough for the quilt.

I love all those soft colors spattered with the floral and stripe prints.

I also tried the lighting in my studio.  It is still looking a bit washed out.

I used a dark blue sketch fabric on the back and quilted it with a light blue thread.  Big ruffly flowers give the quilt a wonderful texture.

It was a nice change to work with large pieces and follow a pattern.  This pattern is called Studio Chic by Artichoke Patterns.  I bought it over a decade ago and I am not sure if it is still in print.

Now I am ready to get to my scrap bins.  I do still have a few stash pieces I might try and make a quilt from but that will be another day.

Enjoy your weekend!

(Today is the last day of Connecting Threads big sale.  A few prints from this quilt came from there!)

Class Samples

Just popping in today to share a quick little finish.

I recently taught one of my Scrap Mixology workshops and we were talking out making holiday gifts.  We decided the Two Bit block would make a fun potholder.  So when I got a chance, I made a couple to toss in my training bin to share at future workshops.

I pulled the mini 9 patch out of my spare parts and the rest of the fabric came out of the scrap bins.  I think they turned out kind of cute.  They are purple...what is not to love!

Here are a few of the blocks the students made.  There were lots of Christmas quilts started.

Here is a closeup of one students blocks.  She is using contemporary florals with bright colors.  I think it is going to be amazing when it is finished.

This weekend I am teaching the Well Suited block.  It should be another fun day sewing with scraps!

I am just finishing up the binding on a quilt from my stash.  Yes, a finish that is not made from scraps!  I hope I have it finished to share this Friday!

Connecting Threads is currently having their Big Sale.  There is a new deal each day.  Definitely a great time to stock up!

Oh Scrap! : A Goal for December

I am still working away on a number of scrap quilts I started making in 2021.

I made a few more of these Two Bit blocks in purple.  This was a Rainbow Scrap Challenge quilt I started about mid year and have missed making blocks a couple of months.

I had the pieces for one of these already cut.  I found it recently when straightening up.

I also cut and sewed this one.  Once it was finished, I really didn't like the gray I used.  I am a bit afraid it is going to stand out a bit too much.

Here are all the blocks I have completed to date.  I am planning a 5 x 6 block layout so that means I need to finish 11 more blocks.  I pulled out some orange scraps to add next.  My hope is to finish this quilt by the end of the year.

(...as suspected, I don't really like the grayish block. But maybe I can hide it in a corner - Don't worry, I won't give up on it yet!)

Another Bloom Finish

Boy, do I love today's quilt!

Remember this basket quilt I shared a couple weeks ago?  It was made using the 4th Scrap Mixology pattern module called Bloom.

Today I am sharing this lovely quilt made using one of the other layout options shown in the pattern

I really do love how this one turned out!

The scraps I used are very muted.  The colors were pulled from the dotted dark fabric.

I don't know why I love this quilt so much.  It is actually going to reside in my personal quilt collection.  This quilt isn't going anywhere!

The quilt measures 64" square.

The great thing about all of the Scrap Mixology patterns are that they share so many ways to change the look of a singular block just by changing the block placement, moving around the color arrangement, or by swapping out components to slightly change the appearance of the block.

It is hard to believe this is the same block as the basket quilt above!

Like so many of my Scrap Mixology patterns, this Bloom block would make a great Rainbow Scrap Challenge block.  I could definitely see each of these group of blocks done in a different color of the rainbow.

...and one more photo because it s so pretty!

You can find the 13 page pattern for sale in both my Etsy shop and in my Payhip store.

I have one more finished quilt I will be sharing in a couple of weeks.  There are also a few more layouts I share in the pattern that I am itching to make.  Especially one that has a real Navaho blanket look to it.  Done in Fall colored scraps it would be amazing!

I hope everyone enjoys their weekend!

BTW - I will be teaching the Well Suited Scrap Mixology quilt in Springfield Oregon to the Emerald Valley Quilt Guild.  I think you can still sign up to join in on the fun - just contact them directly!!

Oh Scrap! : Not Always Perfect

Last Sunday I shared some scrappy nine patches made from some low volume scraps.

I have quite a few prints in my scrap bins that have a white background that never seem to have a home.  So I decided to come up with a simple design to use some of them up.

One block is a simple nine patch made with all 3.5" squares in a low volume.

This week I sewed some blocks with black/white squares.

Together they look like this.

I tried to use up the scraps I have and when I picked my black and white prints, some I feel had a bit too much white.  It would have looked less busy if I hade focused on fabrics that were all dark.

Not perfect but I am not changing it.  I still have two rows of blocks to sew and I will try and make them all with dark black squares.  When I work on the final layout, I will try and place the light darks around the edge so the middle chains show up more.

Even though it isn't turning out quite like I envisioned it, I still like it for its scrappiness!

So tell me, do you give up on scrap quilts if they aren't quite perfect?
