Sunday Stash

It has been a long time since I have shared some of my fabric acquisitions. Rest assured I have still been picking up some new fabrics for future projects.  I just have not allowed myself to start too many new things.  There are just too many other WIPs around my sewingroom that need my attention right now.

I did purchase a fat quarter bundle of Melody Miller's Playful and a great Cotton + Steel blue backing.  I don't have a plan for this one yet but I adore this fabric so whatever gets made will be for me!

A recent trip to my favorite local quilt store (Quiltwork Patches in Corvallis Oregon) had me buying up some backing pieces for my stash.  I like to buy 4 or 5 yard pieces when I see a great deal.  And around $5 a yard is a great price!  I do have projects in mind for two of these - the rest I know will eventually find a home.

Yesterday I received some happy mail from the Fat Quarter Shop.  I took advantage of their basic of the month sale and picked up these 4 yard pieces of Basic Grey's Grunge fabric.  I enjoy having lots of different background fabrics in my stash - and when I can get them on sale, I enjoy it that much more!

I also added these fun polka dot fabrics in to the mix.  I won them from Diann over at Little Penguin Quilts.  I have a few ideas on how to use them swirling around in my head but I haven't made a final decision yet.

Diann also tucked in this adorable little pincushion made from some Gleeful scraps.  I absolutely love it!  In fact, I now have it in my livingroom so I can use it for pins/needles rather than my sofa back like I have done in the past.  Thanks Diann!

I think there have been a few other pieces that have found their way to my house.  I will try and be a little better at sharing what I am buying.  I know I always like to see what fabrics people buy and in what quantity.  I will be linking up with Molli Sparkles.
It will be fun to what fabrics other quilters are adding to their stash.

Oh Scrap! : In Case You Missed It

There have really been a lot of great projects linked up here at Oh Scrap!  I thought I would share some finishes I especially liked.

Three Old Keys shared this lovely string quilt (and some fun yard art I might add).  I really like this layout and the use of low volume scraps.  This quilt was made for the H2H donation quilt drive.

This beauty was shared by Sane, Crazy, Crumby Quilting.  Now this is my kind of scrap quilt!  And it was quilted on a Janome sewing machine.  Nice job!

Emily at Em's Scrapbag finished up her scrappy Dresden quilt.  I love the blue background on this one!

I even spied a finished Scrap-A-Palooza quilt by Alycia Quilts.  I think this would be perfect for a 4th of July picnic!

There were also a number of projects that are in the works that I really look forward to seeing completed.  Maybe we will see them linked up this week!

Daysail Dizzying Diamonds Quilt

In February, I was excited to have won a copy of the Dizzying Diamonds pattern by Sew Bittersweet Designs for meeting my January ALYoF goal.  I shopped around for just the right layercake and decided that Bonnie & Camille's Daysail collection would be perfect.  I was super excited to find it available on sale through Craftsy.  A chunk of Navy Kona and I was in business.

I love almost every print in this collection.  I did leave the striped prints out of this quilt - I thought they would be distracting and thankfully you do not need the entire cake to make this pattern.

Here is my finished quilt...Isn't it pretty!  This is the second quilt I have made using a Bonnie & Camille collection and I have loved them both.  I think they are one of my favorite fabric designers.

For the quilting, I went with a freehand floral design in a navy thread.  I love the texture it adds to the quilt.  For the back, I had this fun navy chevron in my stash - another bargain purchase I knew would come in handy someday!

There were lots of HSTs in this quilt - in fact, 4 of each print.  A trick I use to disperse prints throughout a quilt top is to sort 4 identical stacks.  Use one stack for each quadrant of the quilt.  Now you won't have all of one print in one area of your quilt top.  Pretty clever, huh!

I did get stalled out on this project more than once waiting for an empty design wall.  I was beginning to think I would never finish it!

Thanks goodness for Finish-Alongs!  I was determined to get this one done before the end of June!

2015 FAL at On the Windy Side

I have done really poorly meeting my second quarter goals for the 2015 Finish Along with On the Windy Side.  While I had set 4 goals, this quilt will be my only finish. (Insert sad face).

But the third quarter will soon be here so I can set some new goals.  These finish-alongs really do help me keep focused on the finishes!

Bucket List Quilt - Park Bench Progress

Having been chased indoors by ridiculously high grass pollen, I find myself quite busy in my sewing room lately.  And with so many projects in the works, I have not felt the need to start anything new but rather, I have been working on existing projects and getting them closer to a finish.

More progress has been made on my Park Bench quilt.  The blocks above are the Hopscotch blocks.  This block really took some precision to get it to fit together.  Even though I was extremely careful, they are not quite as flat as I would have liked them.  All of the fullness will quilt out but my pride was a bit bruised that they weren't perfect.

I now have 6 blocks finished.  There are a total of 15 in the quilt so I am coming up on halfway.
Aren't they pretty!

The next blocks I am going to tackle are the Sing-along blocks.  Here is my fabric pull - you can see there will be a number of different fabrics used in each one.

I am really enjoying these blocks.  They are the perfect amount of challenge without being so difficult that I get frustrated and loose interest.
It also helps that I am taking it slow by only doing a couple blocks a month.

What are you working on?

Scrap-A-Palooza! Quilt #16 Part Three

With my 24 scrappy offset log cabin blocks all finished, it was time to play with some layouts this week and choose a favorite.

First up was a traditional barn raising layout. The curved appearance to the blocks make such a visual difference than the more traditional block.

Chevrons are popular - how fun is this!

Any time I make these blocks, circles and half circles always make an appearance.

Once I started playing around, I decided I needed some background spacers so I made a few blocks in all low volume prints.  When I do this, I like to use the same scrappy block layout rather than just put in a square of fabric.

Here is the layout I ended up with.  I love those big circles of color!
I also found because my yellow, pinks and chartreuse blocks blended in with the background a bit,  when I created other patterns, they were distracting.  While I wish the colors were a bit stronger, in this layout, I don't mind them so much.

One of my reasons for making this quilt was I wanted to play around with a scrappy low volume background.  As I was cutting my strips, I fought the urge to use fabrics with very little prints on them.  I am really happy with how this turned out and will definitely be more adventurous in the future.

Now I need to make a final decision on a backing fabric.  Two fabrics from the stash will work.  The dramatic one on the left is a recent purchase - a black fabric with bright polka dots.  The one on the right would be a softer choice.  Speak up if you have a favorite!

And did you see Linda at The Road to Oklahoma made a block in these pretty teal colors.  I can't tell you how happy I always am when I see someone sewing along.  Once she made one, she says she is ready to make more!

Here is an example of what can happen when you start playing around with these blocks.  Here is my Strawberries + Cream quilt that was published a while back in Quilty magazine.

Scraps are perfect to just play with!!
