After finishing a few quilts, it was time I straighten up my sewing room this week. I try to keep all the fabric together for a project until its completion - or I will inevitably use the needed fabric on something else.
I admit there is a LOT going on in my sewing room right. There are piles and stacks of projects everywhere. As I was moving things around, I found buried one of my last orphan block stacks I was planning on making into a quilt. I had completely forgotten about it!
I didn't have any of the light gray in my stash so I used a darker gray and turned all the orphan HSTs and leftover bits into these fun 9.5" blocks.
I was only able to make 12 blocks. Rather than use them as the center of the quilt, I am thinking I might use them as an outer border and do something with this dark plum fabric in the center. Hanging to the right is the print I will probably put on the back. It is a narrow strip of an extra wide print so it will require quite a few seams.
This one might be in the "thinking stage" until I get my next inspiration. I am sure it is buried in my chaos somewhere just waiting to be found!
So I am curious how many of you build your quilts as you go on a design wall/floor.
I rarely know what direction my quilts are taking until the bits start going on the wall!

I love what you have at the moment. So many possibilities. I miss being able to play with parts. 365 Challenge quilt doesn't leave much room for "personalized" inspiration. Next year, I will enjoy such moments as I miss them a lot this year. ;^)
I, too, keep fabric with a project (even if it's only in the "planning" stage) so that I won't use it for something else. But I have been known to raid a project box for just the right shade of something! When working improvisationally, I design on the wall. Also, I let the center of the quilt tell me what it needs for borders. BUT I've been known to design a whole quilt around a chosen border print. Could this be why my sewing room is always in chaos?
It always does seem like cleaning up the sewing room leads to uncovering more projects! I like the colors for this one! I'll enjoy seeing what you do with the center.
I build as I go a lot but no design wall here and I rarely use a design floor. I just imagine.

I build as I go. Many times I am using remnants or other people's blocks. I lay it out on my "design bed." It is the only large space available. My walls are covered with artwork.
I dream of having a barn with sky high walls, THEN I could have a design wall AND display enormous pieces of art.
Mine are designed in EQ and then brought to life. But maybe someday I will just wing it.
Mug rugs are my go-to with scraps. They are a quick project and always have some on hand for a last minute little gift.
Almost all my quilts are flying by the seat of my pants. Blocks get moved around on the design bed, but can't linger there overnight! A lot of the thinking and planning happens while I'm just standing at my cutting table. I really like the broken dishes as the outside border and I'm wondering what that center will look like :)

I must be one of few that rarely just “wings it”, But, then, who would buy all the patterns you brilliant designers dream up? Give me a pattern, or an idea, then I’m a happy girl!
But I do keep projects together in project boxes, bags or baskets!
The blocks are lovely. I use a design floor or the coffee table. Once the quilt gets too big, I usually just wing it and hope things will be fine.
My current project is the appliqué elephants. I bought that pattern. But I have designed blocks in EQ. I have made templates from patterns in magazine. I don’t seem to have one particular approach.
Your orphan block project is lovely! I’m eager to see where it goes.

Hi Cynthia, isn't it fun to find stuff that we had forgotten we had?! Some of my projects are planned but the ones I enjoy usually are not.
Oh I like where this is going! Then maybe something with a bit of grey and a color pop in the center?
I absolutely build my quilts on the design wall/floor. I don’t have much patience with computers, so EQ is out. This will developed into someth8ng cute! I can tell!
Are you a fan of applique? I wouldn't have to be something fancy and complicated but I think would look lovely.
