Good Bye 2024!

It is time to say goodbye to 2024.  It was a crazy, unexpected year for me and I think I am ready for it to end.  I am really looking forward to 2025.  Many Hands and Many Hearts should be an official 501c3 in a couple months and I know that is going to be fun to see.  I love my board members and all of them are enthusiastic and ready to see MHMH grow.

Here are a few more random finishes to close out the year.  Janet played with some lime and turquoise blocks.  Nann sent in this white and black print.  Up close you don't really see the repeating pattern but it sure shows from a distance.

If you are curious, this is the 11th quilt made from this Jewel Box block drive.

What a fun little scrap quilt Denice made.  I think it is based on the potato chip block.  Denice also sent in the fabric for the backing.  She might not have planned this backing for this top, but it fit so we went with it.

This fun little rail fence quilt top was sent in by Kristin.  The top is made from 30"s prints.  We didn't have any of those prints in our backing stash so we went with a fun flannel fabric.  The little bunnies are super cute.

I have always loved this scrap quilt designs.  I think it is called birch trees. I tried to track down a link to the pattern but I don't think it is available anymore.  Elana made this quilt top.  I love all those green shades for the background.  Thanks to Elizabeth, we had this awesome turquoise backing.

We have our first delivery of 2025 due the first full week of January.  We needed just one more veteran quilt to fulfil the order.  Janet pulled some churn dash blocks out of our stash and came up with this fun design.  Stephanie sent in the bright backing print for the back.  This is the 13th quilt we have made from the Churn Dash block drive.

Here are some year-end numbers for you....

We delivered 265 quilts last year.
Not bad considering it was the first full year of operations.  And that was all done with the help of volunteers and with no non-profit status. Toward the end of the year, our output was about 1 quilt/per day.  I am hoping for some substantially bigger numbers next year!

We ended the year with 38 finished quilts ready for donation in our stash.
We have consistently been ending each month with a surplus.  It is looking like we should be able to add another recipient organization to our list soon.

We received over 150 quilt tops and finished quilts last year.
We still have a LOT of unfinished quilt tops in our stash.  My focus this year is to find more local longarm quilter to help get these done.  With a board of directors now, a lot of work has been lifted off my shoulders - freeing up some time to accomplish this.

Last year we received over 4200 blocks in our block drives.
For each block drive we usually have about 45 to 65 people contributing blocks.  It seems to really depend on the complexity of the block and who the quilts are going to.  Kid blocks are definitely the favorite and we did not have a block drive for kids last year (Our last block drive for kids generated a whopping 3800 blocks!  We are still working through some of them.  The current block drive is also for kids so I am hoping to start 2025 out with a bang!)

I think I will end here saying I SO appreciate all the love and support I have received.  I couldn't bring comfort to so many people without your help. 💞  Thank you so very much!

Oh Scrap! : Something New

One of the things I have quickly discovered, is that I really need to have at least one scrap quilt going all the time to use all the scraps made from the Many Hands and Many Hearts quilts.  Most of the scraps we end up with are the back trimmings and the odd small bits that get sent to us. Many of these I turn into binding but sometimes, they are just not good candidates for various reasons.

While I was trying to clean up some scraps today, I saw a lot of green, blue and yellow scraps so I decided to start cutting those scraps into 2.5 x 8.5" strips.

I sewed up one block so you can see what I am doing with them.  Really simple block but I hope it will burn through some of these piles around here.

Happy Scrappy Sunday!

Oh Scrap! : Not my UFO

Occasionally, along with blocks, fabric or quilt tops, we get some unique items or orphan blocks.  In this case, we got some partially finished blocks.  I just set them aside,

However, I kept thinking about them and would stack some coordinating fabric on top of them.

There were eight hydrangea blocks - some were completely framed and some were not.  We did have a similar fabric in stock that I thought would work to finish framing out those blocks.

I dug through some scraps and found the dark purple fern fabric that was previously used on a back.  While in the scraps, I found a fun purple floral and another print that would work with the greens.

I just alternated the blocks and pretty quickly had a top.  It is not the loveliest quilt but I still think it works.  And it made some space in the scrap bin!

I do enjoy getting creative with these types of projects.  I just never know when the inspiration will strike.  I think sometimes I just need a project that uses my brain rather than the mindless sewing of blocks together - which is what I do a lot of nowadays.

I have many more projects like this...I wonder what will strike my fancy next!

Some Late Friday Finishes

I said I would share some Friday finishes with you - but I didn't say at what time.  I seem to be still running about a day behind for some reason.  It was kind of a messed up day.  I did need to get a plumber out to my house.  I have been almost a week without being able to do much laundry or dishes.  I was originally going to fix it myself but I finally gave in and just hired someone.

Even with all that, we still had a few more quilts get over the finish line. Local quilter Kelly brought me a couple quilts she had longarmed. This scrappy X block was sent in by Mina. I love the bright colors and the use of black/whites.   Elizabeth sent in this lovely turquoise backing that really finished off the quilt nicely and shows off Kelly's fun quilting.  The rest of the quilts all need to be bound before I can share them.

I think it has been a while since we have seen any Happy Quilts.  This one is all about the ocean.  Jeanne sewed up the blocks and pieced the backing.  The dolphin print was sent in by Tina and Dorothy sent in the yellow piece.  According to my records, this is the 97th happy block quilt we made from the block drive over a year ago.  We still have a few more blocks to get too!

Charlene put this quilt top together using a layercake sent in by Karen.  Charlene and I have been going through some of the precuts on the shelves and coming up with designs to get them used. I think this one turned out great.  We used a blue print sent in by Nann for the back and then local quilter Laura did her thing.

Check out this stunning quilt!  This amazing pattern is by Yvonne of Quilting Jetgirl.  It is called Triangle Transparency and it is available to purchase on her site.  This lovely quilt top was sent in by the mother/daughter team Linda and Margie.  We were able to find a soft green print sent in by Elizabeth for the back and Laura did a wonderful job quilting it.

Yvonne has a bunch of other lovely patterns in her shop if you want to take a look.

In the mail today, there were a couple finished quilts.  Thanks so much Cheryl for this lovely dog-themed quilt.

Cheryl also sent in this scrappy winter themed quilt.  The top is all flannel with skiers and snowmen.  On the back is a lovely map print.  Both quilts are very appreciated and will definitely brighten someone's day.

Hope everyone has a stress free weekend.  I just realized that Christmas is next week so I am guessing many will be out picking up last minute shopping.

Kind of Quiet

I have to say, it has been kind of quiet around here lately.  A lot of the elves are busy helping Santa right now.  The mail carrier hasn't been stopping at my porch too much lately.  And I have been taking a few extra naps.  It is nice to have a break so it might be this way until the new year comes around.

There are still some quilts that are getting finished.  Here is the 10th Jewel Box finish.  We received a LOT of blue blocks so you will probably see quite a few more all blue quilts.  This one has a nice subtle striped print on the back that was sent in by Karen.

This quilt measures 64 x 72".

Elizabeth sent in this lovely quilt top.  I had sent it off to local quilter Kelly to finish and I definitely gasped when it came back.  The colors are so pretty.  And the print that Nancy sent in looked like it was made for the quilt.  It is super soft too - maybe a voile?

This quilt is about 60 x 72" too.

Did you guys see the Fisher Price collection of fabrics that came out?  This is the panel that came with it.  Kristin added a cute plaid border to it and sent it to us.  Kristin also sent in this cute backing.
It all made a very adorable quilt.

This quilt measures about 48 x 54".

Kristin was the person responsible for the big flannel and kit hoard that was leap frogged here to Oregon.  A few days ago, she found another person heading to Eugene and sent more fabric and kits.  This little scrappy beauty was one of them. Not only did she put together the top and backing but she included a batting. I had a bit of time one afternoon and it was an easy one to grab and finish.  Love the soft flannel turtles!

This cutie is about 40" square.

As you can see, Janet is in her elfin element right now.
Silly Christmas sweaters and mistletoe head gear.

I am very much a Bah Humbug, but she did talk Arthur into joining in on the fun.  He zoomed around the room and collected kisses.

I should have a few more to share Friday!

Oh Scrap! : Ooops

Sorry Everyone...I thought today was Saturday.

No scrap pictures today but I do have another "ooops".

It's been cold here and Janet thought Arthur needed a polar suit.

Arthur:  Not sure this is right!

It's Friday!

There are some very scrappy quilts in the lineup today.  It is interesting to see how quilts flow through the pipeline.  I bet it directly relates to my moods!

Marci sent me all these lovely scrappy blocks.  These are the 10.5" squares.  I am pretty sure this backing fabric came from an estate.  It is an amazing whole cloth.  The edges were all finished and it had some sun damage that I was able to cut around.  I think it must have been draperies - it sure is nice fabric and a beautiful print.

This quilt measures 60 x 70".

I actually put together this scrappy quilt.  It was one of the quilt tops I made from the mountain of flannel scraps taking up a corner of my sewing room.  It is very snuggly, and I am sure will be very appreciated by an outdoors person.  Stephanie sent us the leafy flannel for the back. It definitely has a lodge feeling.

It measures about 50 x 60".

Here are more blocks sent in by Marci.  These are smaller and measure 6.5" square.  I gave these blocks to Chris who assembled them into the top.  And then it went to Terry to quilt.  Dorothy sent us this lovely floral backing.  I have already used it once in another large quilt.  It certainly is perfect for this scrappy quilt.

This quilt measures 54 x 72".

As soon as I get the giant custom client quilt that has been on my frame for days finished, I will get back to quilts for Many Hands and Many Hearts.  I wonder what I will be in the mood to work on!

Everyone, have a great weekend!
