Pink!

With the color pink being the RSC color for October, it is time for me to start making some string blocks.

I already have some pink "standard" string blocks tucked away for a future project.  I think I need a few more but I have to find my "master plan" for these blocks.  I think it is written on a scrap of paper somewhere that I filed away so I wouldn't forget where it was....

So in the mean time, I started making these pink blocks.  They measure 10.5" x 8.5".  I am using a fabric foundation just because it helps me to see where I am on the block.  I could use paper but I really hate the mess it makes!

 So far I have 18 blocks all finished.  I think I will need a total of 40 blocks for a nice lap sized quilt.  I am using a number of pink shades in each block plus one or two strings of gray.  

This quilt makes me happy!

Oh Scrap! : Progress

Pink is the Rainbow Scrap Challenge color for October.

So I dug around in my Kaffe scraps and sorted out some pretty fabrics to finish up 9 bow tie blocks.

I now have a total of 28 eight inch blocks completed.  These blocks go together so quickly - and I really like how the blocks look all together.  My goal is not repeat any Kaffe fabrics - which if you have seen my stash, know that is easily doable!

And look...I made a bit more progress on my sister's quilt.  I tried to add in some shades of slate green but I am not sure the blocks will make it into the final layout.  The quilt will end up at almost a king size so MANY more blocks are needed. 

So right now I am just trying to focus on getting blocks done!

October Deals

I am the first to admit that I am not much of a consumer.  But when I do spend money, I do love a good sale on the items I love.  There are a few good deals going on right now with a few of my affiliates that I thought I would share with you.  

Every month, I always love to see what items the Fat Quarter Shop chooses for its Basic of the Month.  This month they have all their Moda Grunge Basics on sale. This is one of the fabrics I keep on hand in various colors to use as background.

I used the Evergreen color as a background for one of my Rejoice table runners.  It is a great color to have on hand for those last minute Christmas gifts.

For Columbus Day, AccuQuilt has their Studio Cutter and dies on sale.  I think my favorite and most used die is my 2.5" squares multiples die.  It is almost always set up on my machine so I can quickly turn scraps into useable squares.

And finally, if you are looking for a fun Fall project, Connecting Threads has a great deal on some Autumns quilt kits and Halloween fabrics.  They have their books and threads on sale too.

Oh Scrap! ; Burgoyne Block

Well, I am still ignoring my sewing room - but thank goodness for my Sunday blog commitment!

I did spend a couple of hours in there on Saturday so I would have something to write about.  I finished a few more boring brown blocks for my sister's quilt...

But I spent most of that time cutting and sewing up this second Burgoyne Surround block.
Isn't it pretty!

 Now I have a total of two blocks completed.  So many more to go....

I am looking forward to seeing what the RSC color announcement for October will be.  That will give me even more reasons to ignore my sister's quilt!  :)

Sewcial Bee Sampler Finish

I rarely make quilts from an entire collection of fabrics or by a specific designer.  But when I saw that Maureen Cracknell and Sharon Holland were going to host a Quilt Along last spring, I thought it would be fitting to break out my treasured Maureen Cracknell fabrics.

A new block was released each week.  I didn't always do a great job of keeping up but it never took me too long to catch back up again.  Some of the blocks have frames and some are without.  My goal from the beginning was to use a different fabric for all of the frames.  

I used Kona Snow for the sashing, which I cut at 1.5".  I wanted something simple that would allow each individual block to shine.

 I was able to capture a photo of the finished quilt just before the sun went down.  I am really happy with how it turned out.  It is probably one I will be keeping for myself.  It is nice to have fabrics from the first three Maureen Cracknell collections all in one quilt.

I used this navy fabric that was in my stash.  With the front of the quilt being so light, I wanted a nice dark fabric for the backing.

In a cream thread, I free motion quilted some feathers and various swirls across the quilt.  I am really happy with how it turned out.  My initial plan was to quilt each block differently but I am glad I went with something simpler after I loaded it up on my machine.

Eye Candy Inspiration

Not too long ago, Maureen over at Mystic Quilter shared that she had purchased Kaffe Fassett's newest book Quilts in Ireland.

Yes, I ended up following suit and picking up a copy for myself.  I have most of his other books and I do really enjoy looking at all of the beautiful quilts and photography.

This is the quilt that Maureen shared and I was totally intrigued by it.  I really loved the use of stripes.

But I have to admit that this one captured my heart.  I am not a big fan of making a bunch of HSTs but I think this quilt will be worth it.  I am already starting to set aside fabrics as I come across them!

The book is on sale right now at Connecting Threads (along with many others) if you want to pick up your own copy.  There are some other quilts that I enjoyed too.  Now I just need to find the time!

Oh Scrap! : Slow Work

There has not been a lot of activity in my sewing room lately.  I am determined to only work on projects on my UFO list, so my obstinate self, just doesn't go in there and sew!

The only scrap sewing this week is two more bowtie blocks.  That is it!

I sewed this as a leader/ender project while I was working on blocks for my sister's quilt.

My sister had asked for a quilt a couple years ago for their trailer.  I love my sister dearly but when I asked her for some color suggestions - she said shades of brown.  And...?  Maybe a bit of gray.

Now you know why it has taken me two years to get this one going.  And why I haven't been sewing much this week!

I did get 80 - 90 big HSTs sewn just waiting to be chopped and sewn into these blocks.  They do go pretty quickly so I think once I get in the mood, I will make great progress on it.
