Oh Scrap! : Not My Scraps

I had a ball playing with scraps this week.  Only they weren't my scraps.

Marci sent me a whole bunch of string and slab blocks made from her scraps.

Here are some of the slab blocks she sent.  They measure 6.5" x 8.5".
She definitely used some tiny pieces.

As soon as I opened up the package, I was instantly inspired to add some strips on each side of the block.  I initially thought a warm brown or even a black.  But when I looked in the stash, I came across this lovely avocado green.

I had a quilt top in no time at all!

I think I have enough blocks from Marci to make another quilt - maybe with a solid navy blue.

I won't be able to play with the next batch any time soon.  I have a few other blocks and quilt tops that need my attention.  But this quilt sure was a fun distraction for an afternoon.

Marci sent many other configurations of scrap blocks I want to play with so stay tuned!

I Thought I Would Never Finish

I love it when my quilts come entirely from my scrap bins.  And I am also happy when a quilt design cleans out my scrap bins of pesky small bits.

But I thought I was never going to get this quilt top together!

When I woke up this morning, I was determined to get this top together before I accomplished any thing else.  So many small pieces in this one!

While I was on a roll, I also pulled some fabric and sewed up the backing.  Now I just have to sneak it onto my longarm frame.

(You can just barely see my new ironing board cover in this photo.  I just pulled some unwanted fabric from my stash and ended up with this brown dot - it makes my board look like it has some sort of horrible pox.  It makes me giggle every time I use it.)

I now have an empty design wall to use for an older UFO.  I am torn between my Sew Kitschy wall-hanging and my Kaffe Splendid Sampler.  Cheer for your favorite in the comments below!

And have a wonderful weekend!

Oh Scrap! : Next Steps

Last night, I finally found some time to sew a few more scraps.

I have been using scraps to make 6.5 x 9.5" slab blocks in red, pink and orange.

I am now making a scrappy slab of low volume prints (3.5 x 9.5") to sew to one side of the slabs.
I love it when my quilts end up being made from 100% scraps!

Oh Scrap! : The Battle is Real

I am really making a concerted effort to work down my scraps so that I can at least close all of the bins.  I realized this weekend that all of my design walls are filled with scrappy goodness.

All of my Rainbow Scrap Challenge blocks are up on the design walls in my studio behind my longarm.  I will continue to work on them into 2019.  I think I need 12 more blocks for the quarter log, 13 blocks for the zig zag and who knows how many for the center garden quilt.

I love seeing all that color as I enter my studio every morning!

The postage stamp quilt is slowly growing in my sewing room.  Green is just starting to make an appearance.  The next block will be tricky because I have to blend green, yellow, peach and purple.  But I only have 6 more blocks to go!

And the slab blocks are over on the other wall.  I have decided to create a zig zag design.  I am just switching over to some orange scraps now.  If you look closely, I am creating some low volume scrappy strips to create a space between the slabs.  I am not firm yet on the color placement.  I will decide that on a later date!

What are you doing with your scraps?

Oh Scrap! : Slab Blocks

I am still slowly working on my postage stamp quilt, but while I have my scrap color bins out, I decided I needed to start another scrap project.

I found I had a number of 1.5" squares left over in red (from my postage stamp) and I still had a lot of small bits still in the red bin.

I decided to make some slab blocks that measure 6.5" x 9.5".
I don't really have a firm plan on how I am going to use these but I thought a rectangular shape would give me more to play with.

I already whipped out ten blocks this weekend.  Soon I will move onto some pink blocks.  I think for this quilt, I am going to stay on the warm side of the rainbow spectrum.

But we all know I could change my mind as the quilt evolves!

So tell me, what are you sewing with your scraps?
