Oh Scrap! : Orange you Glad...

I love Orange!  It is such a happy color. Right now, I think I love it so much because it reminds me that Fall is almost here.

My favorite time of year!

Last week, I completed 4 more bowtie blocks in shades of orange.  I also decided to make a dozen 10" string blocks.  I cleaned out a lot of the orangey peach color and golden pumpkin strings from my scrap bin.  I still added in some bright oranges just to add some "spice".

I am not going to make a string quilt this month so I just added the blocks into my "string" project box.  I thought I would see what I had in there.  Turquoise and green 12", yellow 10", turquoise and lime 8" and purple and pink 6" blocks.  Just what am I suppose to do with all this!

Plus there are a number of odd shaped rectangles.
I decided just to put everything back in the box - I can figure that all out later!

    Neutral Strings - A Finish

When Angela (Rainbow Scrap Challenge) announced that neutral scraps were going to be focused on in August, I didn't expect that it would result in a finished quilt but it seems like that is the case.  While cleaning up in my sewing room, I came across a bag of neutral strings and the rest is history!

Almost all of these scraps were gifted to me.
As many of you know, these are not my usual choice of colors.

If you read my previous post, I did go back and change the way I was sewing up the blocks.  Now the strings all match up (versus "flipping" the strip sets.  I used some Kona Snow for all of the sashing.

I had two choices in my stash for a backing.  The first one was a cream background with some brown and taupe flowers.  But I felt this black one added some much needed color to this quilt.

I think the quilt is a bit boring but I know it will be perfect for someone who likes their quilt to match their décor - I admit, I am not one of those people.  My current go-to quilt is a big pink bunny.

We FINALLY got some rain!  It was much needed to knock the horrible smoke out of the skies and aid in containing the many forest fires all around Oregon.  It has been so sad to see so much of our beautiful state in flames this summer.

    Have a Wonderful Weekend!

Quilty Adoptions - Mark Your Calendar

The month of September is here and that means it is time for the bi-annual Quilty Adoption Event!

Twice a year, I host an event that enables quilters to link up an Instagram or blog post putting up  items for adoption.  It is time to clean out those sewing spaces and take a hard look at the projects and orphaned blocks that have been stuffed away and determine if they are worth finishing.  If you are ready to pass something on that you are no longer inspired by, there will be someone ready to take on your project and get it finished up!

Last spring, I decided to adopt out this puppy panel.  It had been in my stash for a couple years and I just didn't see myself doing anything with it.

Puppy Quilt ~ From My Carolina Home

Carole over at From My Carolina Home was awarded the adoption and she turned it into this sweet little quilt  that was auctioned off at an event for an animal rescue organization.  You can read more about it here.  I was so happy it was finished up and donated to such a great cause!

I am not sure yet what I will be adopting out this year.  I have quite a few stacks of blocks that have been finished for years and I have done nothing with.  I think I will be choosing one of them to send off to a new home.

So how about you, are you ready to off load a project or a few blocks?  Below is some information on the upcoming event.  Just imagine what someone can do with them!

Quilting is more fun than Housework
    Orphan Adoption Event
    Starting September 14th

I will be hosting a linky party starting Thursday September 14th(and closing late Saturday the 17th) where you are welcome to link up your own blog post sharing a project you wish to abandon or orphan blocks you wish to pass on.  You can offer as little or as much as you want.  It can be blocks, patterns, kits, anything that you hope someone else will use and you wish to get rid of the burden.

    Here are some details:

    1.  I am going to ask that any "orphan" linked up must be given away for free.  (If you are wanting to destash for money, there are other venues to do that on.)  I think it is fair that if you need to, you can ask that shipping costs be paid.  Just be sure and put that information clearly in your post.  And know that both parties enter into the deal at their own risk.  I hold no responsibility.

    2. Have clear pictures and descriptions on what you are putting up for adoption.

    3. Define the criteria for how you will decide who will adopt the item.  Is it a random number giveaway, do you only want it to go to charity, or is there some other criteria that needs to be met?

    4.  Be sure and identify where you are located and where you are willing to ship to.

    5. Define how long you are keeping the adoption open and when you expect to award the adoption. (You do not need to close your adoption on Saturday - you just need to link up by then.)

Last Spring, there were over a dozen WIPs that found new homes.  Many were adopted by quilters who were finishing them for various charities.  If you are curious what was linked up last time, here is a link even though all the adoptions are closed.

Thanks again to all the quilters that participated in the past.  If you adopted a project in the past, I would love it if you shared a photo!

    Oh Scrap! : RSC Bowties

A new month signals it is time to start working on a new Rainbow Scrap Challenge color.
September is orange - and I have lots of scraps to choose from.

I thought I would start out by sewing up my bowtie blocks for the month.  In no time at all, I had 6 eight inch blocks completed.  I am using my Kaffe Fassett scraps for this one and had no problems coming up with some pretty oranges.

I added them to a few of the blue test blocks I made a few months back.
I think I am going to really like this one!

      Improv Stripes QAL

      Happy September!
That means summer is almost over and fall is just around the corner.  That makes me happy!

Here is my finish today.  It is my #improvstripes I made following Debbie's (A Quilter's Table) quilt along.  It measures just over 50 x 65".  I really like how it turned out!

I restricted myself to bright blues, red and a bit of bright yellow.  Love those primary colors.  I paired those with black, whites and a few bits of gray.

On the back, I used an older striped stash find with a black print added on to make it big enough.

For the quilting, I used a black thread and quilted squares/lines all going in different directions.
      Improv geometric quilting!

A big thanks to Debbie for hosting.  It was sure a lot of fun!
(You can see lots of other versions on Instagram under #improvstripesqal.)

      Happy Friday!

      Oh Scrap! : Sashing

I spent most of my time on Saturday quilting up my Improv Stripes quilt (which means I should have it finished to share on Friday).  But other than that, there hasn't been much time for sewing.

I did make a decision on how to handle my neutral strip sets.  I decided to add sashing in-between each set with a dark corner stone in the middle.  I did "flip" the strip set.  I thought it would balance out the color but I think it might not have been the best choice.  I am hoping it won't show as much when the top is finished.

I certainly am not changing my mind now!

Here are four completed blocks with the additional sashing I plan on adding.  Sorry about the poor photos but I am a night-time quilter and these neutrals are hard to capture with zero natural light.

Looking at these blocks now, I might have to go back and flip those strip sets around.  Looks like my seam ripper is going to get a workout.

What about you....What have you been making with your scraps!

        Neutral Strings

When neutrals were chosen for this month's Rainbow Scrap Challenge color, I initially thought I would take this month off and work on some other projects.  I also wanted to spend some time organizing my sewing room.  Well, we all know where this is going...

As I was digging through some bags of scraps, I came across some fabrics that were gifted to me.  The entire bag was filled with leftover fabrics in tans, grays and creams.

I decided to chop up the pieces into strings and create some slabs that were about 16 x 17".  I made a total of 12 - using up almost all of the fabric.

This afternoon. I squared them up to 16.5" wide and trimmed each slab into two 7.5" wide strips.  My plan is to sash them somehow so I will probably play with them more this weekend.

This is going to be a very subtle quilt when it is all finished.  Definitely not my usual color choices but it will still be fun to see how it evolves.

        Have a great weekend Everyone!
