Leftover Strip Set Finish

I am ready to share my first finish from my orphan block suit case.  This one really isn't made from orphan blocks - rather it is made using the last unused pieces of some leftover strip piecing.

I save these last little bits and usually try to make 4 patches from them.  I think I have used most of these pieces that were big enough to yield a true four patch - now I mostly had rather small leftovers.  So this time, I decided to just pair them up and sew them as is.

And this is what I ended up doing with them!
Kinda cute, huh!

Because my strip sets created all different lengths of blocks, I cut all the bigger ones to 5" x 4.5" and ran them down the center.  The other blocks I trimmed to 4" x 4".

For the background I used a one yard piece of a white fabric with a tiny blue dot - it was just enough fabric for the top and the binding.

To match the irregular sized piecing, I quilted it with vertical irregularly spaced lines.

I found a fun blue fabric for the backing.
It was just the right size so I knew it was the perfect choice!

I have the second orphan block quilt top finished and I just need to quilt it up.
I really enjoy playing with all of these little bits!

A Quilt Update

I thought I would update you on my progress to finishing the top for my RSC Garden Quilt.  Even though I have been working on some Orphan Block quilts, I am still sewing up blocks and components for many other quilts.

That is always how I sew!

I think the last two blocks I showed you were these pink ones.  I decided I just did NOT like that bottom flower block in my quilt so I modified it some and made another one...

This block is so much better!

I pulled out my brown scraps and made a few more blocks.  I think that small snail block took me as long to make as half my blocks combined!

I didn't have snails when I lived in Washington - we had the giant banana slugs.  So when I moved to Oregon, I thought the snails were cute.  Let's just say I don't think that any more!

I guess I am about halfway done with sewing all my blocks together.  The bottom half will be a bit slower going because I still have a few more blocks to make.

My goal is to have this one finished in September.

Oh Scrap! : More Orphan Blocks

Last week, I shared my first steps on making quilts from saved orphan blocks.  I started that quilt from leftover strip sets.  The quilt is almost finished so I hope to finish up the binding and share it later this week.

Now it is time to dive into a second orphan block quilt.

For this one, I pulled all the bits that had a red, white and blue theme.  I think many of these came from 4 older quilts I finished long ago and the star was a sample for a paper piece class I taught.

My aim is to create a small quilt about 40" square.

Time to start brain-storming and get to sewing!

Geese Migration Table Runner

When I originally started working on my Geese Migration quilt, I had a few different layout ideas.   For the magazine publication, I ended up using an on-point design.  But one of the designs I considered was a staggered layout.

When I teach this class, I like to talk about some optional layouts, so I have been wanting to make a small sample of this layout for visual purposes.

So I whipped up four blocks and made a tablerunner.

I set the blocks in a nice gray and backed it with a fun floral that has been in my stash for years.

I always have so much fun finding just the perfect scrap for these blocks.  This runner is now over at The Stitchin' Post in Sisters Oregon advertising my upcoming class in October.  I think there is still space if you want to sign up!

Leftover Strip Sets

In a previous post, I shared that my orphan block suitcase was so full, it would no longer close.  I took some time to pull out about 5 or 6 stacks of blocks that I might be able to turn into a quilt.

I thought I would share where I am starting.

I save pretty much anything that has a seam in it as an orphan block.  As I was sorting through my suitcase, I kept coming across these leftover strip sets from a number of projects.  I usually save these to turn into blocks like four patches but I decided since they all had the same angle to them, that I would do something a little different.

I decided to simply sew them together!  I just had to press a few of the seams in the correct direction so the pieces would lock together.

Pretty simple right?!?

I ended up with a bunch of blocks that look like this.  I didn't worry about where the slant was located or the colors.  My plan is to trim them down to a universal 5" length (they are 4.5" wide).  There might be a few that will be shorter - I will have to come up with a plan for those after I figure out what I have.

So that is the progress I have made on these bits.
I hope to have a little quilt to share soon!

Do you save these leftover strips sets?  I always hate to toss them!

Oh Scrap! : Slow Scrap Week

Most of my week was spent finishing up my Improv Garden quilt so I didn't make much progress on other scrap quilts.

I did pull some purple scraps and work on another "donut" for the quilt I am making from the book "No Scrap Left Behind".  In fact, I think this is the last color I need for that quilt so you just might see a finish in a few weeks.  I just need to decide on a background color and sew all the blocks together.

Some of my Rainbow Scrap Challenge projects already have enough blue blocks so I won't be sewing any blocks this month.  Here is the current status of my color block quilt.  It has both blue and turquoise blocks already so I will just have to wait to see what color is called next month.

My RSC project wall definitely needs more variety in color.  I have been playing around with some layouts but there just isn't that much there to do anything with.

I am going to have to come up with some other scrap projects to play with the rest of the month.
I am pretty sure I can come up with something!
