Oh Scrap! : Easy Blocks

Lots of cutting occurred this week.  I made a few kits for compassion quilts, I dug through scraps and cut up squares and I put together backings from various odd pieces.

But looking at what I actually have to share, it appears that I have not been doing much.

I made these four 16 patch blocks from some rainbow scraps.  This is just an ongoing project that will be made into compassion quilts eventually.

To date, I have only 21 blocks finished.  I don't know if these blocks will all end up in the same quilt.  For now, I just make blocks when I find a scrap that is a good candidate.

Most of the sewing this week were these low volume 9 patches made from 3.5" squares.

How are they going to be used?

They are going to be added to the big red heart I made and become a compassion quilt.  I have all these busy low volumes and this is the perfect way to use them up.  The quilt will actually be a 6 block by 7 block layout.  The heart will float on the left side of the quilt.  If this one turns out, I might have to make a few more.  They sure burn though the scraps!

What do you think?

I think I would love a quilt like you described with the low volume background and heart floating at the side.

Looks like a lovely way to use up all those low-volume background scraps and this will make a beautiful quilt, Cynthia.

Your 16 patches look great! While they are not complicated, it’s a bit of work to sew them all together. Your heart quilt is lovely.

What a great use for busy low volume prints! They make the perfect backdrop for the heart. Well done! I like those 16 patch blocks too!

You've got some great scrap buster quilts going. I really like the heart one. What a great way to use up those busy neutral scraps.

I am seeing 16-patches popping up on several blogs, mine included! They are so versatile. I really like your colourful blocks and I really like the low volume 9-patches with the heart. I chair our guild’s community quilts initiative and this might need to be added to our list of makes.

I made something very similar to the low volume/heart quilt a few years back when my sister was dealing with breast cancer. I love yours! It will surely give someone comfort at a much needed time. Makes me want to make another one for Mercyful Quilts.

Hi Cynthia, I love your low volume heart quilt. I'm still learning about low volume because when I see more than one colour in a fabric, I assume that it's colourful. I learned this week that very colourful fabric (like the dots fabric that I used in my SAHRR quilt) doesn't mean that they will stand out. That's by I redid the bottom row - they were all disappearing, even if they were colourful. I may do something like your low volume quilt just to learn more about this colour fact :-) Thanks for the linking party. Have a great week!
