Covered In Love Quilt #6

I have been working away on my big pile of quilts that need to be bound.

I just finished another Covered in Love Quilt!

I am still working on the "Oh my Stars" blocks.  I needed to come up with another layout design that used less blocks so I could make an additional quilt from all the supplies Kat sent.

I usually just get a box of blocks and various yardage.  Lots of time the bindings are even all sewn, pressed and rolled up.

I love this step of sorting the blocks and fabrics into quilts.

Two things I noticed in my supplies was that there were a lot of friendship star blocks with white backgrounds.  There was also a piece of a great flag fabric.  I instantly had an idea and I just had to decide what stars I would use for the center.  I spied these red stars someone made, and I instantly started sewing.

A few blocks on the front had some bright blue in them so I put this fun fabric on the back.  I also loved the red striped binding.

Isn't this quilt lovely?!

And it only used 24 blocks (rather than the normal 30) so I have blocks for the last quilt.
Which I hope to share soon.

Thanks to all who donated blocks and materials!

Happy Friday to all!

Oh Scrap! : More Stars

I have been making good progress on all of my current scrap quilts, but I thought I would share with you today my pink star blocks.

Last week I shared how I started making these pink and gray stars from some scraps I thought looked great together.

From the scraps I had, I was able to cut enough bits to make a total of nine blocks - three blocks of each pink print.  I have been slowly sewing them together this week.  Sorry about the nighttime photos (it is when I sew) but you can see the plaid really overpowers the blocks.

So I decided to cut some corner stones from that same plaid fabric to balance out the colors in the quilt a bit. I really didn't want to use the gray solid for the sashing but I don't have enough of the pink scraps.

But I do have some skinny strips of all of the pink fabrics so I think I will strip piece the sashing like this to break up the background a bit.  Plus it will use up more of these scraps!

Now that I have a plan, it shouldn't take me long at all to finish up this little quilt top.  I think it will look cute when it is sewn up - and I will try to get some better photos for you.  😊

Sometimes Quilts Start Themselves

I finished my red scrap blocks so I moved onto my pink color bin.  I am trying to just use my smaller scraps to clean them out of my scrap bins.  So it takes a lot of sorting to find just the right size.

As I was pulling out all the larger chunks of scraps, I saw all these pink and black scraps.  And instantly thought.....Hmmm, I might be able to do something with those!

So I grabbed some Shadow Gray solid and soon had a star block.

I am not sure how many blocks I will be able to make.  My plan is to use the smaller bits of the plaid in cornerstones or in a border.  We just have to wait to see how these scraps work themselves out.

I am obviously not in control in this project :)

I think I am trying to see how many projects I can work on at once.  I currently have 5 stacked up around my sewing machine right now.  I might need an intervention soon!

Wishing all of you a great week!

Ratification Stars

Recently, I watched the 4 hour American Experience documentary "The Vote".  I realized I had forgotten so much about the struggle women endured for generations to obtain my right to vote.  I highly recommend the show.    Here is what is said about the show:

One hundred years after the passage of the 19th Amendment, The Vote tells the dramatic culmination story of the hard-fought campaign waged by American women for the right to vote — a transformative cultural and political movement that resulted in the largest expansion of voting rights in U.S. history.

In its final decade, from 1909 to 1920, movement leaders wrestled with contentious questions about the most effective methods for affecting social change. They debated the use of militant, even violent tactics, as well as hunger strikes and relentless public protests. The battle for the vote also upended previously accepted ideas about the proper role of women in American society and challenged the definitions of citizenship and democracy.

Exploring how and why millions of 20th-century Americans mobilized for — and against — women’s suffrage, The Vote brings to life the unsung leaders of the movement and the deep controversies over gender roles and race that divided Americans then — and continue to dominate political discourse today.

I could relate to the suffragists sewing stars on their Ratification Banners as each state ratified the amendment.  Above is a photo of Alice Paul hanging her completed banner after the 36th state (Tennessee) made the amendment the law of the land.

I decided to add some ratification stars in purple and gold to my "Vote" quilt to honor those three generations of women who fought for my vote.

I decided not to applique my stars - instead I used ThreadBareCreations' Christmas Star pattern.
You can download it for free and it comes in lots of sizes.  I made mine 4".

I think maybe I will put them between my big letters as shown above.
So far, here are all the blocks I have completed to date.

If you want to read any additional information on any of the blocks above, you can do a search of my blog for "vote".

The 19th amendment was the culmination of more than 70 years of struggle by woman suffragists.  It is important that today's women honor that fight by voting.

Please make sure you are registered to vote - above are the deadlines by state to request a vote-by-mail ballot for the November election.
Please take any necessary measures as soon as possible!

Finally...Some CIL Finishes

Every time Kat over at Kat & Cat Quilts puts out a call for Covered in Love blocks, I always have the intention of making some.  Sadly, I rarely follow through with those intentions…

But this month I made it a priority and finished up some red, white and blue 12" maverick star blocks to send her way.  It is just a design I made up so I could use fabrics from my scrap bins.

I have a few bits of red, white and blue patriotic scraps and decided to start with those in the center of the blocks.  Then it was just a matter of finding a piece large enough to cut all the necessary pieces.

For the last one, I decided to get even more scrappy.

So I have three blocks to send off to Kat soon.  Now I won't have to feel so bad when I see the maps where the blocks come from and see Oregon not represented  :)

If you want to read more about the Covered in Love quilt block drives, you can read more about it here.  There is still lots of time to contribute some stars of your own!

A Firecracker of a Quilt

I just finished sewing up the first block of my Summer Solstice quilt (with Happy Quilting) and I just had to share.  Like the weather, this quilt is definitely going to be Hot! Hot! Hot!

These blocks finish up at 24" and I will be making a total of nine of them for my quilt.  I wanted to try and use two background colors and I really like the effect on the block.

I have sorted all the components into blocks and bagged them up.  So now, I can just grab a bag and sew up a block.and not spend a bunch of time searching for parts.

A bit of weeding and watering outside needs my immediate attention but I hope to get another block sewn up tonight.

I am pretty excited about this one!

You can find information on Melissa's Quilt Along here.  I love her designs and she definitely hit this one out of the park!  Thanks Melissa!

Oh Scrap! : RSC16 Column Sampler Blocks

Hello all you scrappy quilters!  I think Sunday is my favorite day of the week.  There is always so much scrappy goodness to oooh and aaah over.

Over the last week, I did finish up my pinwheel block for my Rainbow Scrap Column along quilt.  My teal scraps were either really dark or very turquoise so it was a challenge to get the graduated shades I wanted.  It is definitely time to add a few light shades of teal to my stash.

This fall, when I start to put together the top, I may kick a few of these blocks out and remake them in softer colors.

But for now, I am just going to tuck them away with all of the other finished blocks.  It is awfully tempting to get these out and play with them!
