Another Tumbler Finish

I have made a few quilts using my AccuQuilt 3.5" tumbler die but this is the first quilt I have used using my 6.5" die.  Thanks to all the alignment notches right in the die, this quilt was a breeze to sew!

I pulled a bunch of leftover Parsons Gray/Curious Nature fabrics from my stash and the stash of a friend.  There were a bunch of odd cuts and because we both bought the fabric lines, there were many duplicate pieces.  Anything that was large enough was cut into the tumbler shape.  In fact, some of the prints, I actually pieced some strips together so they would fit the die.

It was time for this fabric to be used up!

I decided to lay the tumbler shape on its side and sew them up in columns.  I also used the lighter fabrics to form some bowtie shapes throughout the quilt.

There were some fabrics that I had a lot of pieces and a few I only had a few.  I just tried to distribute them all as best I could.

For the quilting, I used a pantograph called Ebb & Flow.  It worked really well with the fabrics and the tumbler shape.  I also used a dark gray thread for the quilting.

I still had a few prints that I wanted to use up so I planned those for the back.

I will definitely make many more quilts using this tumbler shape.  I think the size of this quilt turned out to be about 54 x 60.  The smaller size was perfect for color blending but I like this tumbler size because it shows off the fabric prints so well!

Perfect timing!  AccuQuilt is currently hosting a sale on both the Studio model and it's dies (which is the unit I have) and has discounted the Go! dies as well.

Some Stash Busting

I have decided to focus on using up some of my older stash this summer.
So I gathered up a bunch of Parsons Gray fabric and loaded my 6.5" Tumbler die into my AccuQuilt cutter and in no time had a stack of pieces ready to lay out.

I am not sure yet on the design - I had only a quarter yard of some pieces and more than a yard of others.  I will have to play with them to see what I come up with.

I also decided to cut up some old numbers fabric into 2.5" squares.  I pulled some odds and ends solids that coordinate nicely and quickly created a framed nine patch block.  I like to have baby quilts on hand and I am down to only a couple.
I thought this might make a nice gender neutral project.

I still have quite a few stacks of blocks that need to be sewn into a top and quilted.  I am working though those as a design wall opens up.

Right now, there is no shortage of work in my sewing room!

The Tumbler Shape

One of my favorite dies for my AccuQuilt fabric cutter is the Tumbler shape.

You may remember this quilt I made with the shape back in 2017.  It was fun to play with values in black and white fabrics.

And this colorwash scrappy quilt I made back in 2016.  It is one of my all-time favorite quilts.

Well, I have been wanting to play with the shape again.  While waiting for inspiration to strike for a big project, I thought I would make something small.

I used my 3.5" tumbler die and some scraps to make this fun table runner.  This shape is so easy to sew together.

And with the die, all the alignment notches are right in the die so sewing is always accurate!

I put a fun crosshatch fabric on the back.  This is one of the colors of Sketched Lines from Connecting Threads.  It is one of my favorite backing fabrics right now!

I have both the 3.5" and the 6.5" Tumbler dies.  I need to decide on some scraps and start sewing!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Tumbled

Have you seen the newest issue of Quiltmaker magazine yet?  It should be hitting newsstands soon so keep an eye out for it.

QM1708 COVER 500 New Issue: Quiltmaker July/August 17

I am pleased to announce that one of my quilts was published in it!

Remember back in August last year, I was using my AccuQuilt fabric cutter to turn a bunch of my black and white (and red) scraps into these fun tumbler shapes.  If you have a fabric cutter, I highly recommend this little 3" tumbler shape.

(This is the same shape I used to sew up this colorwash quilt.)

The quilt is called 'Tumbled' and it was made by separating all the scrappy black and white prints by value and laying them out so they darken as they move toward the outer border.

Scraps are so much fun to play with!

Oh Scrap! : More Tumblers

I tried to resist the temptation but when a quilt is in your head, you have to get it into fabric!

I have been setting aside some larger black and white fabric scraps and this weekend I got to cutting them up on my fabric cutter (along with some pretty reds). I am not sure I would make a tumbler quilt without it!

Hopefully I will find some time this week to work on a layout.

And I should mention that this Friday I am hosting TGIFF.
So you have a whole week to get a project finished so you can link up!
I would love to see you there  :)

Scrap-A-Palooza! Quilt #20 Finish

I was cleaning out some photo files and realized I forgot to share my finished Scrap-A-Palooza one block quilt!  I guess it went together so quickly it was almost like it didn't happen....
but it is really pretty so I will share it!

In part one, I explained the concept for this Scrap-A-Palooza design is to use just a single shape for cutting your scraps.  It can be diamonds, triangles, hexagons - whatever specialty ruler you have around your cutting area.

I decided to use my AccuQuilt Tumbler die and cut up hundreds of 3.5" shapes from my green, blue and purple scraps.

In the second process post, I shared a few possible layouts.  I did decide on a colorwash design and explained my process for laying out all the colors. In no time at all I had a finished quilt top to share.

It immediately got quilted up and bound.  I REALLY love this quilt.  One of my clients offered to buy it from me but I am just not ready to part with it yet.

It is hard to believe that it is just made from old scraps.

Placement of the colors was a fun little puzzle.  I just kept moving them around and trying not to get too picky. I really wanted to find a home for all of the pieces I had cut.

With so much color on the front, I couldn't resist using some vibrant older stash for the backing.  This quilt really does glow!

For the quilting, I did an allover swirl but I did change the thread colors. I think there were 5 or 6 color changes throughout the quilt.  I didn't want the quilting to affect the colorwash effect.

...One more photo because I love it!

Now because this is a Scrap-A-Palooza post and I always like to share lots of other examples, if you don't want to use tumblers....

...here is a hexagon quilt I also recently finished.   I had a bunch of leftover chunks of fabrics that I really wanted to use up.  I used my Hex & More ruler and cut up some half hexies.
How fun is this little quilt!

And don't forget about triangles.  Remember my Sassy quilt?  Once again, this one was made from a bunch of leftover pieces from previous quilts.

One of the reasons I love these one block scrap quilts so much is they really are great scrap busters.  Because there are no backgrounds, all of the fabric comes from the scrap bin.
Okay, and the other reason is because you can make some pretty darn cute scrap quilts!

Happy Friday!

Oh Scrap! : Scrap-A-Palooza Quilt #20 Part Two

What a week of scrap busting!  For my "one block" Scrap-A-Palooza quilt, I decided to go with the tumbler shape (I was also considering the triangle or the diamond).  My AccuQuilt tumbler die is 3.5" so I dug through my blue, green and purple scrap bins and cut one or two tumbler shapes from any scrap that was large enough.  Thanks to my die cutter, in no time at all pretty stacks of tumbler blocks were lining my cutting table.

Once all the blocks are cut, it is time to decide how to lay them out.

The first choice is to go scrappy and just sew them up in a random placement.  I have done this occasionally in the past but I do love to play with color so I tend to group colors together in some sort of combination.

***Sorry, these little blocks are tiny so my sample layouts are not going to be that big.****

I could also lay out the quilt with my greens on the top third and gradate through blue and then finish with purple on the bottom third.  I was planning on 20 rows so each color would get about 7 rows.

Another option is to get really fancy and create different shapes within the quilt using the scrap colors.

With the tumbler shape, just flip the block and you can get a very different look.  With a little work, I bet you could get a very cool Navajo looking pattern.

All interesting, but my regular readers know how I roll.  I like to REALLY play with color.

Soon 400 plus tumbler blocks became this.  I have been wanting to play with depth in my scrap quilting and I have to say I really like this one.  There are scraps of fruit, batiks, solids, modern, kaffe, 1800 and 1930 reproductions....pretty much anything.  But they all play happily together.

It went together surprisingly quickly.

If you are curious how I did it, I started with two white tumblers in the center of my wall.  I decided to have a quadrant of turquoise/teal, blue, purple and green.  Then I started just slapping the tumblers on the wall in their appropriate quadrant.  The lighter the shade, the closer to the center they were placed.  And just like on a color wheel, the blender colors were placed in those between areas.  Then starting at the white, I just started placing them.  There were a few challenging areas but I just kept moving tumblers until I liked how they looked.

I admit, once I had them up on the wall, I was not looking forward to sewing up all these tiny pieces.  But the great thing about a fabric cutter is each block is perfect and they have all those helpful alignment cuts that make piecing a breeze.

Yep...it is now a quilt top!
