Compassion Quilt Offset Log Cabin Block Drive

It is hard to believe it is time to announce the next Compassion Quilt block drive.  I am not even close to getting all the Hapy Blocks from the last drive into quilts.

So, I thought I would choose a more involved block this time around to give me time to get caught up.  One of the traditional blocks I love to make with my scraps is a log cabin.  I thought an offset log cabin might be fun to play with.  These blocks will make some great quilts for adults.

Here is my example of the block we will be doing.  It will create some fun curves when it is laid out with other blocks. And it is all done with 1.5" wide white based strips and 2.5" wide dark strips.

From Dark Prints, cut:

• 2½” x 10½” J rectangles
• 2½” x 8½” I rectangles
• 2½” x 7½” F rectangles
• 2½” x 5½” E rectangles
• 2½” x 4½” B rectangles
• 2½” A squares

From Light Prints, cut:

• 2½” A squares

• 1½” x 11½” L rectangles
• 1½” x 10½” K rectangles
• 1½” x 8½” H rectangles
• 1½” x 7½” G rectangles
• 1½” x 5½” D rectangles
• 1½” x 4½” C rectangles

***It will make assembling the block really easy if you label your lengths A-J***

Here is a diagram of where each piece falls in the block.  First you sew the light and dark A pieces together.  Then you just attach the pieces alphabetically in a counter-clockwise direction.

This diagram shows you placement of the light and dark pieces.

The completed block should measure 11.5" square.

Colors:

Dark Prints - Blue, Green, Purple

Light Prints - please use white based prints.

*You can get as scrappy as you want with these blocks - but please keep to the green, blue, purple color scheme and try not to introduce other colors.

*You can also make your blocks from just two fabrics if that is what you have.  All of the white-based strips can be the same and all of the dark based fabrics can be the same.

*If you don't have a big stash of scraps, you can use multiple colors for the dark side of the block - as long as you stick with blue, green, purple prints.

Updated:  Here are a few more samples of some blocks sent in by Karen.  They are pinned to my white design wall so the white fabrics blend in.

If you have my Spin! quilt pattern, these are the same blocks that are used in that quilt.  You will also find the block instructions in that pattern.  We are making the Dark Blocks for this quilt drive.

This block drive will run until the end of February.  I know everyone will be busy over the holidays but if you could get your blocks sent out by the middle of February, that would give me a bit of time to get them sewn before the next block drive.

If you have any questions, just email me at cynthiabdesigns at gmail dot com.  Try not to put questions/requests in the comments unless you know for sure I can reply to them.

A big thanks to all.  I will be trying to finish up the Happy block drive as you elves start sewing these Log Cabin Blocks.  We shattered all previous records and it is going to take me a bit to get all those kid quilts sewn.  Once I get them almost done and a final tally on all the blocks received, I will write up a summary post.  You are not going to believe the numbers!

If you are curious, these quilts will be supporting multiple programs at Sacred Heart Hospital here in Oregon.  They are called Compassion Quilts and you can read more about the program here.

Again...Thanks for any help you can give.

Oh Scrap! : RSC Finish

This week I decided to take a break from quilting Happy Block quilts and loaded my RSC quilt onto my longarm.  It has been patiently waiting in my studio for a couple of months now.

There are actually three different blocks in this quilt - all are 12".  First there are a rainbow of heart blocks I made.  As I was making heart blocks, I also mad a monochromatic 36 patch block.  The last blocks in this quilt are the chain blocks.  I was sent those as an orphan block from Elana.  I think they worked perfectly in this quilt.  They were all super enjoyable to play with.

On the back is a happy print with ballons.  Nann sent this bright fabric for a Compassion Quilt - which is what this quilt was made for.  It was kind of fun to play with these three colorful blocks for a change.

I have started a new RSC project, and I am hoping to have another set of blocks completed for it next week.  I seem to be going my own path on its completion.  I might have it finished soon so I can start fresh with a new project in January!

Happy Quilt Finish #32

Happy Friday!

I just have one Happy Quilt to share with you today...

This one has a fun woodland animal theme.  So many of you have such cute fabrics!
I set this one with the staggered layout.

Amanda sent me a giant cut of this fun woodland animal flannel.  I was able to use it for the back of this quilt #32.  And I had enough to use it on one more quilt I will be sharing later.

I did realize today in the hustle and bustle of getting quilts delivered last week, I did miss getting photos of a couple of quilts small quilts that Kristi and Josie sent in.  Sorry about that!

Hope those who celebrate had a wonderful Thanksgiving.  If you are now ready to take advantage of some Black Friday sales, Check out my affiliate links below.

The Finishes Keep Coming

I have a few more Compassion Quilt finishes to share today.

Check out this lovely quilt! So simple but I think it is an awesome quilt.  Jean sent in this quilt top.  It measures 56" x 61".

Jean had sent in a backing that was white with some rainbow dots on it but I really wanted this one backed in a purple. I was gifted this fun back and I loved how it looks.

I am trying to make some larger quilts for older kids.  Happy Block Quilt #29 has an ocean theme to it.

I really like when I stagger the blocks.

A fun dolphin print on the backside.  It doesn't get any more perfect!

This quilt measures 56" x 72".

All things sports were added into Happy Block Quilt #30.

I had received this soccer ball backing a bit ago so I just made the quilt to fit the backing.

This quilt measures 56" x 64".

Quilt #31, I am sharing the backside first.  I am trying to get all the flannel bits I have sewn up into quilts for the winter.  Lynette sent me these two pieces and I thought they looked nice together.  The white flannel has rainbows and butterflies.

So I gathered up enough butterfly blocks to make it into a quilt.  It is not very big (32 x 40") but it will be perfect for an infant or a toddler.

In about a week, I will be announcing the next Compassion Quilt Block.  So if you have some Happy Blocks to send, please send them out soon.

For those who celebrate, Happy Thanksgiving!

I know I give thanks for all of you!

Oh Scrap! : One Year Ago

This was a busy week for me.

One year ago, my little man Authur came to live with me.  So this week has been all about him!

We had a couple parties.  He thought they were great fun - especially all the treats!

I hope you have lots of fun scrappy things to share...

Happy Quilt Finishes #23 thru #28

Yep!  I am ready to share six finished Happy Block quilts.

First up are some quilts others made using the Happy Blocks they completed.

The first one is this fun little quilt made by Debra.  She made all of her blocks with the same plane fabric set in some coordinating solids and then framed them up in black.  I love how she added in bright colors in her border and made mini happy blocks for the corners.

A scrappy back with some fun plane fabric.  Such a cute little quilt.

This one measures about 40" x 48".

I think quilt #24 has such a great fall feel to it.  I don't know if it was intentional, but I love those spice-colored yellows and oranges with the turquoise.

Thanks Sandy for inspiring me to work with those colors in the future.

I love the turquoise flannel on the back!  I was able to use a fun turquoise binding Beth prepared for me to finish it off.

This sweet quilt measures 40 x 48".

Chelse also sent in a sweet I-Spy quilt. I love how she alternated those light blue blocks with other colors.  She sent in her quilt all completed so all I had to do was get it delivered!

Her quilt was backed with a lovely orange print.  This quilt also measures 40 x 48".

Quilt #26 was one I put together to fit a piece of fleece I had.  I had two small pieces I was able to piece into a small back that would fit a quilt 32" x 40".

I used some very baby themed blocks to create a fun I-Spy quilt.  I didn't put in any batting because the fleece was really thick.  I was worried about it being too heavy.  It sure is a very snuggly quilt!

I had a lot of fun putting together this firefighter themed quilt.

I had received some strips of firefighter themed panels so I decided to use those as a horizontal sash.  These strips determined the width of the quilt.  I also used some "Cars" fabric sent in by Kelly and her sister for more sashing.

The Cars fabric also ended up on the back.

Quilt #27 measures 48" x 62".

And finally, quilt # 28 is all about ladybugs!

Thanks to a couple of ladybug prints Karyn sent in, so is the back!

I delivered a trunk load of quilts to the hospital last Wednesday.  Monday I will be delivering another dozen to Bags of Love.  Some of these quilts I am sharing today might already be bringing comfort to someone!

Thanks for all of your support and help in making this happen.  You guys are awesome!
(If you have made blocks and still have not sent them in, please do so soon.)

Hope all of you have a great weekend!

A Compassion Quilt Parade!

Thanks to the help of lots of different hands, I have lots of lovely quilts to share today.

First up is this really pretty lap quilt Becky made.  She sent me ten quilt tops a long time ago and this is the last one to get completed.  I am guessing this is a layercake pattern.

This quilt measures 54" x 70"

Kathy sent me some "winter" themed backings (also) months ago and this fun sled fabric worked wonderfully on this quilt.  It will be the perfect season now for this one to get handed out and bring comfort and warmth to someone.

McGill sent in this fun top.  It measures 48" x 58" so it was the ideal size for me to send it off to Cindy to quilt.  Her quilt system works best with these smaller sizes.  She did a great job on it - her meander leaves look amazing on the quilt.

I pulled a couple fabrics out of my stash for the back of the quilt.  I really wanted to use this diagonal stripe on both the binding and the back.  I didn't have quite enough so I found a pink and brown print that worked to make the backing wide enough.

Karen sent in a kit for this string quilt.  All I had to do was quilt it up.  I really like the black sashing and black borders - they really set off the blocks.

This black print with red cherries looks great on this quilt.  There was just enough of the trimming from the backing to make the binding.

This quilt measures 42" x 55".

How great is this pinwheel quilt top that Sue sent in!?  I love the design.  It has such a fun optical illusion to it.

I didn't find any backing fabrics I liked in my stash for this quilt so I went over to a friend's house and stole this fun floral.  I appreciate that she lets me shop in her stash.  This quilt measures 44 x 54"

And finally, McGill also sent in this batik quilt top.  I am assuming it was made from a jelly roll.  This quilt measures 52 x 52" so it was another project I sent to Cindy to quilt for me.

I didn't have any batik fabric for the backing so I used this pastel colored lantern print I have used before.  The last bit of yardage was the perfect size.  Thanks Kat for the giant piece you sent me.  All that is left are small strips that will be made into binding.

I did find a small piece of batik fabric in the Compassion Quilt stash I was able to use on the binding.

I really do appreciate these quilt tops that are donated.  It might take me a bit of time to get to them but I try and get as many as I can on my longarm in between block drives.  Plus, as I find more elves to help out with the quilting, they can work on these tops as I focus on the block drive quilts.

It just all takes time to organize...
