A Package from Beth

Okay, it was actually two packages from Beth.

It was like Christmas when they arrived!

The first box I received had four quilts all made by Beth.

The first one I saw was this cute dinosaur quilt.  The center of the quilt has the cutest green and turquoise dinosaur print.

This one will definitely be going to Bags of Love in their September shipment.

A fun frog quilt was next.

These two quilts show that you can simply take a fun fabric and add some coordinating borders, and you have a great quilt for a kid.

I thought this design was brilliant too.  It features some bright colored batiks that all have different animals on them.  To add to the width, randomly insert a square on each strip.

Love the colors in this one!  The strip of colors down the back really ties everything all together.  I think Beth does all her own quilting and she did a lovely job on all of these.

The second box arrived a couple days later and there were six completed quilts in this box!

The next three quilts were also made by Beth.  But she had some help - her friend Barb made all these lovely blocks.

Beth and Barb made quite the team because together they also made this quilt.

These quilts by Beth and Barb are all so bright.

Beth also sent three quilts by her friend Holly.

This quilt by Holly is made with tan and plum batiks.  I really like the visual effect this quilt has.

Here is a similar one made by Holly in green.

And finally, Holly played with color on this little batik quilt.  It matches Janet's shoes :)

A huge thanks to Beth, Barb and Holly for sending these ten quilts to Many Hands and Many Hearts.  All I had to do was sew on the label.  Now they will be sent off soon to give a quilty hug to someone who needs one.

The next block drive has been announced.  We will be making these little Jewel Box blocks.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Block Drive - Jewel Box Blocks

It is time to announce the next block drive.  I have always called these blocks Buckeye Beauty blocks but Nann called them Jewel Box blocks.  I like that better!

Here is the block we will be making.  The blocks measure 8.5" unfinished.  They are comprised of two 4 patches and two HSTs.  They are lots of fun to make.

The colors we will be using are black or black/white prints for the chain (predominately black please).

The background should be white, white on white, or a very low volume print with a white base.

The HSTs can be blue, green or purple.  We will be using some of these blocks to make some quilts for teens so bright colors are great!

For each block you will need:

5" white square     QTY = 1
5" blue, green or purple square     QTY = 1

***These will make both HSTs used in the block***

2.5" x 5.5" White strip     QTY = 2
2.5" x 5.5" Blk/Wht strip     QTY = 2

***These will make the two 4 patches***

Let's make the HSTs first.  You can use whatever method you like but this is the one I use.

Draw a line on the back of the white fabric diagonally from corner to corner.
Line up the squares right sides together.
Sew a line 1/4" on each side of the line.

You will then cut along the line between your stitching.  You will end up with two triangles like above.

Now you will want to press open your triangles.  I press toward the dark fabrics.

Your HSTs will be a tiny bit over-sized so you need to trim down to 4.5" square.

You will end up with two HSTs needed for the block.

Making the 4 patches are easy two.  You just need to sew the two strips together, press toward the dark side and then cut them up into 2.5" x 4.5" pieces like above.

Now just flip them around to make two 9 patches.
(Sorry, I thought I took more photos of the process.)

NOTE:  I use scraps so I don't always have long strips.  You can make your 4 patches from strips that are just over 10".  You can also make your patches from 2.5" squares.

Put the components into the above configuration and then sew up the block.

Here are some blocks I put together.

If you are pulling components from some of your parts stash, please make the block all one color - either blue, green or purple.  Please don't mix the colors within the block.

This block drive will end around mid-November.

***********************************

These quilts will all be donated to Many Hands and Many Hearts Many Hands and Many Hearts where they will go out as compassion quilts in Oregon.
If you have any questions or need my address to send out your blocks, feel free to email me at cynthiabdesigns at gmail dot com.  Try not to put questions in the comments unless you know for sure I can reply to them.  Thanks!

If you still have some of the Two Step blocks to send from the last block drive, please get them sent to me soon.  I want to get them all made up into kits soon so they can be sewn into quilt tops.
Thanks so much!

Oh Scrap! : A Quick Flimsy

Sometimes the smallest things send me off into a whole new scrap project.

I have been planning in my head that my next scrap quilt will be based on a 9-patch.  I was hoping to start it this week.

When Marci sent me the scrap slabs that I used to make last sunday's quilt top, she also included a bunch of pieced strips that someone had sent her.

I knew right away how I was going to use these!

Making all these Autumn quilts for the current block drive, I have a bunch of leftover fabric chunks I need to figure out how to use.  These strips were 12.5" long so I dug through my big scraps and cut some big 12.5" squares for blocks and some 2.5" squares for cornerstones.

Easy peasy quilt top!
And it looks like I got all fancy with the piecing.  I love it!

Now maybe this week I can get back to the scrappy 9 patch quilt in my head....

*********************************************

It is now your turn to share what you are making with scraps.  Here are the details for linking up:

Finishes Galore

Oh My Goodness - I have lots of finishes for you today!

This first one is another Happy Block Quilt.  This one was not made from the block drive - this quilt top was sent in by Mari.  The little woodland animals in the centers are adorable.

Thanks to Deana, we had the perfect flannel for the back - more woodland animals!

This one measures 32 x 40".

The blocks for this space themed quilt did come from the block drive.

Both of these fabrics for the back were given to me by my friend Julie a long time ago.  It was nice to be able to use them finally.

This quilt measures 48" x 56".

This cat themed quilt is the 93rd quilt made from the block drive.

Penny donated this fun cat print for the back.

This quilt measures 56 x 64".

This super cute little quilt top came from my friend Chris.  She sent about eight quilt tops that were all the same size in similar prints.

I was able to load up this 6 yard orange print (gifted by Suzanne) onto my longarm and quilt six of them one right after the other.

All of these little quilts measure about 40" square.
This is just the first one to have the binding complete.

This quilt top was made by my friend Penny.  (She has been so helpful in turning Many hands and Many Hearts into a charity. I will give you guys a status soon.  It is a LOT of work!)

Yes, these are Tula Pink fabrics.

She also supplied a Tula Pink print for the backing.

This quilt measures 60 x 68".

With the help of some local quilters, we are slowly getting more of the gifted quilt tops finished.  Becky sent in this fun one.  She also made a smaller version which is waiting to be quilted.

I picked this dark teal green for the backing.  And local quilter Terry quilted in some lovely big clam shells.  The quilting really shows up on the back.

My friend Billy had this kit in her stash and knew she was never going to finish it.  She asked me to get it done and donate it.  Well, Penny pieced it for me, Kelly quilted it and then it went back to Penny for the binding.

Billie also pulled a large cut from her stash for the back.  Penny added in the lovely hydrangeas.  This really is a lovely quilt!

It measures about 60 x 75:

What can be made from a handful of orphan blocks?  Jeanne made this lovely orange and green quilt.

This backing print has been used a few times now.  This is the last little bit but it fit perfectly for this quilt.  Local quilter Laura did a great job with the quilting.

This quilt measures 40 x 52".

Here is another quilt top sent in by Becky.  So sorry it has taken so long to finish these up.

Dorothy sent in this yellow and blue print that was used for the back.  And Laura did her quilting magic.

Plus she sewed on the binding - that earns her extra points! (Extra points for Becky too because she sent in the prepared binding with the quilt top.)

I think this one measures about 50 x 70".

As you can see, quilts are really starting to flow.  We will surpass the quilt a day milestone in August - I don't see it slowing down too much as people take vacations.  We are getting more and more volunteers every week!

Next week the next block drive will be announced.  I finally pulled some scraps to make some sample blocks so I hope to work on them tomorrow.  I think many of you will really like this block!

Have a great weekend!
