A Veteran Quilt Finish

I just have one quilt to share with you today. I had a few more finished but I just didn’t have the time today to get them photographed.

I needed one more Veteran quilt for a hospital delivery next week. We finally delivered all the ones made during the last Veteran Block drive. For a quick finish, I grabbed a charm pack that Karen sent and added some sashing and some 9 patches from some donated solid fabric.  I really liked how this one turned out.

I don’t usually add borders, but I felt this quilt needed one.  I was able to use up a nice blue print that was left over from a previous quilt.  It finished off this quilt beautifully.

The charm pack was red, white and blue but I wanted to make this quilt a bit more patriotic. I dug through the stash and found this great print that Karen sent.  It was just what this quilt needed.

This quilt measures 47 x 55".

If the weather cooperates tomorrow, I should be able to get a few more quilts photographed so I can share them Friday.  So stay tuned!

Oh Scrap! : Pink Scraps

Oh Dear...I almost forgot to write my post before I went to bed.

I did finish five more Two Bit blocks in the color pink but I was so excited to have enough blocks for a quilt top, I forgot to take photos.  You will now have to wait to see them in the finished quilt. Sorry!

While I was cutting strips for my Two Bit blocks, I also cut some strips to make more of the blocks that have no name.  I am just sewing strips together to make a rectangle measuring 4.5" x 8.5".  Hopefully someday they will turn into something.

I also received today around 100 orphan blocks.  There might even be more!  They almost fill a large tote.  Guess what is in my future!

Looking forward to seeing what you made with scraps this week!

Log Cabin Quilts #3 and #4

I am starting to see more log cabin blocks arriving in the mail.  Once I open the packages, I stack them into their appropriate color stack.  Once I have enough blocks in a stack, I make a top.  This drive is so much easier than the Happy Blocks drive!

For quilt #3, I grabbed the stack of multicolored blocks with low volume backgrounds (not all white).

I decided to go with a diagonal layout for this one.

I love purple so any time I can add it to a quilt, I am going to.  Karen donated this lovely purple backing fabric.  She sent three pieces that were already cut to length.  I was able to use two lengths on this quilt. They were the perfect length!

This quilt measures 55 x 66".

I still had quite a few multicolored blocks, so I decided to make Log Cabin Quilt #4.  I did add in some blocks with all white backgrounds and two from the "blue" stack.  I don't think too many people will notice. I knew I had quite a bit of the purple floral leftover from a previous quilt backing.  It is purple, green and black but I knew it would look great with these blocks.

When Suzanne sent me this green fabric, she wrote that she was so happy to get rid of it.  I fell in love with it and couldn't wait to get it on the back of one of these log cabin quilts.  It shows the floral quilting so well!

With the sashing, this quilt measures 54" x 67".

There is still lots of time to make and send in blocks if you want to help out with this block drive.  You can read more about it here.

I have two sew days with some friends scheduled over the next two weeks, so I am hoping to sew up more Happy Quilt tops.  Then I can just quilt them as I need them and don't have to worry about assembling them.  We shall see how many we can get together!

Hope you guys all have a great weekend!

A Bit of This and That

Lots of Compassion Quilts quilted over the holiday are still crossing the finish line.

Here are a few more!

I was able to make two string quilts with all the string blocks that were donated.
Here is the second one.

The package of wool batting I used in this quilt was donated by Lois.  I have been saving it for a quilt I knew would be heavy.  Wool batting is so light feeling.

I have been waiting a long time to use this plaid fabric - I had about 4 yards so I knew t would work on the colorful string quilt.

This quilt measures 60" x 70"

I do love the bright green binding!

Karen sent in this "deer" quilt top.  I call it that, but it also has moose, elk and caribou.

Karen also sent in the backing.  It is some of the softest flannel I have felt.  Terry was able to quilt this one for me.  All I had to do was sew on the binding!

This one measures about 55 x 65".

Sue sent in this quilt top quite a while ago.  It just kept getting bumped in the quilting queue.
It is a really fun design.

When I was looking for a backing for this quilt, I didn't have the stash of fabric I had now, so I pulled a solid navy blue.

I knew it would be fun to see the quilting on the back.  I quilted in whimsical daisies and loops - in a white thread.

It was another very rainy picture day so I was thankful Janet could hold quilts for me.

I really do appreciate all these quilt tops people donate.  It adds a nice variety to each delivery of block drive quilts I make.  I couldn't do this without all of your help!

Oh Scrap! : More Green

With all the ice we had this week, I did find time to sew a few scraps.

I still have my green scrap bin out, so I made four more Two Bit blocks for my scrappy quilt.

I also made seven of these scrappy rectangles.  I don't know what to call them - they are really the start to a block.  I will eventually sew on a 2.5" strip to the top and bottom but I don't know what that fabric will be.  For now, I will just add them to the stack of purple ones I made.

The First Log Cabin Quilt

A new Compassion Quilt block drive is now up and running!

With the holidays, blocks have been a bit slow to come in but I am finally able to start finishing up some quilts.

Here it is...Log Cabin Quilt #1.

All I had to do was quilt this one.  Cheryl actually sent in the top all finished.  I love her layout choice.  It is hard to see but a lot of the print have a beach or water theme.

When I was looking for a backing fabric.  I thought this big strip was kind of fun.  It reminded me of sun awnings, so I felt like it matched the beach theme.

It is really a lovely piece of fabric.  I think it had a lot of linen in it.
My neighbor Deana found it for me.

This quilt measures about 50 x 71".

The 2nd log cabin quilt is also completed.  I received a bunch of blue blocks and decided to lay them out in a barn raising pattern.

I used a blue print with a civil war era feel to it.  It was a backing Karen sent.  I wanted to use some of this fabric as a border for a quilt I am sewing up right now.  Now the backing leftovers can dictate how wide my borders can be.  I love to use every last bit!

This quilt measures 66" square.

We are off to a great start!  We already have two Log Cabin quilts completed.  How many do you think we will end up with?!

If you want to donate some blocks, you can find the information on making them here.

Happy Block Drive Round Up

Even though I am not even close to sewing together all the Happy Blocks into quilts, I think I am ready to write up a summary.  I have organized all the blocks into stacks so I am going to guestimate how many quilts I will be making.

We will still keep track as I finish them to see how close I come.

The first Happy Quilt was shared on September 22nd.  Since then, I have shared 57 completed quilts.  I still have 8 in the pipeline that have been started but not finished.  That means there are 65 quilts essentially already made.

I received a total of 3765 blocks from 109 people - that is about twice what I normally see during a block drive.  Way to go!

I also received a total of 9 quilts or quilt tops like the on-point quilt above.  This is always really nice to receive because I can just put them directly in the "to be quilted" or the "completed" pile.

Getting that many blocks was a bit overwhelming at times, but I was determined to work through them.  I used my sewing room floor to organize many of the blocks and yardage.  The photo above is after making 65 quilts!  I have been sewing on my dining room table.

The above stacks of blocks are organized by theme and represent quilts to finish.  Right now I think I can finish another 60 themed quilts.  After that, I should be able to make another 10 as I-Spy quilts.  This means this block drive will have made about 110 quilts.

That is really amazing!

Some other wonderful things about this block drive was I received lots of fabric donations for backings, bindings and the likes.  I now have a nice stash and I don't have to worry about having fabric to finish quilts.

I also put a callout for your old thread.  Boy, did you guys deliver!  I received just about every make of thread - which is nice because I can share with my elves who are sewing up and quilting some of these quilts.  I can usually supply them with their preferred thread.

The biggest surprise was how many cones of thread I received.  The above photo is just a few cones that came with a story.  Sadly, one of you worked for a division that was closing but you made sure all the unused thread was sent my way - it has made a huge difference!  Previously, I was using my thread on my longarm.  It was a big expense!  Now I also have a stash of thread that (so far) have all worked on my machine!

I can't begin to express how much I appreciate all the support I have received.

In 2023, 250 Compassion Quilts were started - with 211 of them getting delivered to one of our recipients.  I am looking forward to growing in many ways in 2024.  I will be sharing more about that later.

If you want to help out on the current block drive, it is a variation of a log cabin block.  I admit I "tapped the brakes" so to speak by choosing a more involved block.  I certainly don't expect to receive 4K blocks this time - but you guys do continue to surprise me.

If you want to make some blocks, the information is here.

I am hoping to share the first quilt of the new block this Friday so stay tuned!
(We are still experiencing Icemageddon here so I make no promises.)

Oh Scrap! : Green

It was such a busy week that I didn't get in much scrap play.  But I did get out my green scraps and start making some blocks.

I started 5 blocks but only one made it to completion.  If the power stays on during the ice storm, I hope to get the rest completed by the end of the weekend.

These blocks are made using my Two Bit pattern.

What have you made with scraps this week?

Six More Compassion Quilt Finishes

It was a really busy week for Compassion Quilts.  Log Cabin blocks are starting to arrive and I have started to plan some fun layouts to sew up.  I received some quilts back from a local quilter who helped me out with some longarm quilting.  And I also got back some quilts that had their bindings sewn on.  Things are always hustling around here!

First up is this adorable quilt that Cheryl sent in.  The fabrics all have a beach theme to them.  With fun fabrics like these, simple patchwork is all you need!

Love her straight-line quilting on this one.

I think this quilt is about 44" square.

I used up some more of the flannel squares Wendy sent in.

I had this super cute flannel panel that Karyn sent me.  She also sent me the soft pink that I added to the sides to make it wide enough.  My friend Chris was able to sew the binding on this one.

This sweet quilt measures 44 x 48".

I also finally quilted the second Two Bits quilt top that Gail made.  I think the quilt is probably upside down but it was pouring rain and my quilt holder was a little height impaired.

Gail also sent in the backing and binding for this quilt.  The wide backing is a lovely swirl pattern but it would not photograph well at all.

This quilt measures 60 x 70".

I also finished up some Happy Quilts!

This quilt with all the cupcake and sweets blocks is Happy Quilt #55.  I wanted it just a bit wider, so I added two vertical borders.  Who says borders have to go all the way around a quilt!

I am still working on using up all the flannel bits I have on quilt backings.  I have had this yellow piece for years and the purple ice cream piece came with some other fabric recently.  It worked perfectly on this quilt.

This quilt measures 36 x 40".

Happy Quilt #56 is a party quilt!

There are sweets, balloons and party hats.

I had one more piece of fleece so I used that on the back of this quilt.  It measures 40 x 56".
Chris also sewed the binding on this one too.

Quilt number 57 is this Happy Zoo quilt.
All the blocks have fun animal prints on them.

The backing is flannel and has more zoo animals.  It does have a slight whitening where the bolt was probably sitting in a window.  It really shows up in the photo but it is hard to see up close.  No matter - it is a really cute quilt that will be loved!

And a special thanks to my goofy friend Janet for holding up all the quilts for me!

Hope everyone has a nice weekend.  We might get some snow Saturday so it sounds like I will be home all weekend sewing!

The information on the current block drive is in this post if you want to make some blocks.
I would really appreciate it!
